It took six months to wait for our appointment but today we finally had our appointment with a a pediatric physiatrist. I really just wanted to get another opinion about what Sarah needs. Anyway, the doctor felt Sarah and many kids with Ds have immune suppression. She has developed her own thingytail which includes: colostrum , zinc, vitamin c, omega 3, echinechia, and a multi-vitamin. She doesn't sell any of these things but has made suggestions of where to look for them. The only thing she is was specific about was where to get the colostrum and which form to buy. I know many of you have tried different vitamin therapies. I never considered it before since giving Sarah medicine was almost impossible. This past year she will finally take it without fighting like a wild animal. The colostrum is very expensive. I'm sure my husband will have a heart attack when he finds out what it costs. What are your thoughts about this plan? She also suggested we cut out all dairy products since Sarah has had so many upper and lower respiratory infections. She want to check for celiac, too. She also told us that antihistamines often cause kids with Ds to become aggressive. Hmmmm........ Chris

{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Those are all vitamins right? Is colostrom considered a vitamin? Mary and I take lots of vitamins and Brook just takes her normal vitamins the doc prescribed. My thoughts: vitamins are good

My advise would be check with your Ped to make sure of the amounts you are giving. Vitamins are a GREAT thing but can be a bad thing if to much of certain kinds.
Christopher has just always taken a multi vitamin along with fluoride (sp?) for his teeth.

Colostrum is not a vitamin. It is what a mother produces before her breast milk comes in. Yes, the doctor did give me the exact doses of each vitamin, mineral and herb to give Sarah. There is no guessing. She also told me what form (liquid, capsule, chewable) she wants Sarah to take. I believe the colustrum is around $200 for a month's supply. I'm still on the fence. I did go out and buy soy milk and soy yogurt. We are stopping all dairy as soon as we can get the rest of it out of the house. Chris

Chris, I think there is a lot of info out there about babies/kids with Ds having immune suppression. That was the reason we gave Emily specific vitamins when she was much younger. I've always felt that it helped boost her immune system, and to keep her healthy enough to learn....and to be less susceptible to infections she came into contact with at preschool.
I respect the knowledge of Dr. George Capone regarding kids with Ds, and I have attended a few conferences where he has lectured on vitamin therapy. It was very interesting to me!! He said that a number of people had asked him.........."If YOU had a child with Ds, would YOU give them specialized vitamins"? So, he researched it, and he finally said he was very much in favor of kids with Ds taking Vit E and Vit C, and that he did not think there was any evidence that the other ingredients in the vitamin therapy would be harmful at all. Of course, when you are dealing with fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K), you want to avoid giving more than the recommended dosages since they are not as readily eliminated from the body.
The theory behind targeted vitamin therapy is that children with Ds tend to metabolize various nutrients somewhat differently than children without Ds. They might need more of one vitamin or mineral and less of others. One thing I remember reading is that they do NOT need iron......and that it can actually be harmful. I don't remember the specifics, but I think it had something to do with the plaques and tangles that are formed in the brain that eventually lead to Alzheimer's disease and the connection with iron, but I don't remember!
I don't know if that helps at all.........but I know I would be willing to try it. At the time we decided to spend a great deal of $$ on vitamins with Emily, we did a lot of research on them and felt like IF there was any good that could come from it.....why would we NOT at least try it. I'd do the same thing again.
Just a quick google for the benefits of colostrum:
"Independent medical studies show that colostrum contains natural substances that:
* Regenerate and accelerate normal growth of aged or injured muscle, bone, cartilage, skin collagen and nerve tissue. * Help burn fat for fuel instead of muscle tissue in times of fasting. * Help build and retain lean muscle. * Help repair our body’s DNA and RNA. * Help balance and regulate blood sugar levels. * Help promote the healing of burns, surgeries, and cuts and mouth sores with topical application. * Help control infection and pain associated with gingivitis, sensitive teeth and dental work. * Help the immune system destroy many bacteria and other pathogens that have a negative effect on the gastrointestinal tract, including pathogenic yeast, campylobacter, E. coli, Helicobacter pylori, Listeria, Rotavirus, various strains of Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Clostridium, Shigellosis and Salmonella."

Thanks, Susan. I have been so busy with school (this time of year is always busy for a music teacher!) that I haven't had time to research all the things this doctor is recommending. We did take Sarah off of all dairy starting yesterday. I was a little worried when I gave her soy yogurt. She could tell it was different but she ate it. ;D I also made chocolate pudding with soy mild. She ate it! Now I have to go buy some soy cheese. Sarah had some sort of lower respiratory infection from April until October. Not extremely sick but we just couldn't get her completely well. Like many kids with Ds, she has frequent upper respiratory infections, too. The doctor felt she has a suppressed immune system. Chris

My friend who has a daughter with DS has always given both of her children fish oil, garlic, multivitamin, and a probiotic, and she has some of the healthiest children I know! Kaelyn got a sinus infection last week, so I started her on a probiotic (which worked wonders with her poop issues!), a liquid DHA oil I found for kids, and I found a Flintstones chewable for 2-3 year olds, that I crush up and add to her food (she did not like the gummy vits!). Kaelyn has been a pretty healthy kiddo so far, *knock on wood*, but I hope these will help keep her even more healthy!
