We didn't realize Em had not gotten a flu shot so I took her to a local pharmacy to get it today. Ed's office is all out. I thought it was funny cuz the pharmacist said it was "on sale"...LOL. Apparently people are not getting them this year...he said it could create a dangerous situation as flu season is really just getting started. He said that with all the attention to bird flu and plenty of vaccine around this year...it has just not been a media item.
Having had REAL INFLUENZA once as an adult...I can say...it was right up there with having my knee replaced...so I am first in line every year!

I always get the flu shot every year. I had it once and it was really horrible. I never have to pay though. My Medicaid always pay it.

I have never in all my years ever gotten a flu shot nor have my kids and knock wood none of us have ever had the flu ;D My Mom had the shot one year and truly had the worst case of the flu she ever had in all her years so for me and just talking bout me I am not a believer in getting the shot. I hope I have not jinxed myself and my family but I am hoping this year is the same as every other year no shot and no flu CC ~

Nicky and I always have the flu shot every year, also the shot against pneumonia too. Its essential for anyone with heart or lung problems. In all the years we have been having it we have never had any bad reactions - never had flu either ;D

Hey Pauline I am not saying you are wrong BUT I do think it depends on what type of heart condition as Chris up till just last year has dealt with heart issues and he never has had the shot .... and never had the flu.... KWIM You said "Its essential for anyone with heart" I think it depends on the heart issues, just my thoughts He has had to deal the VSD, WPW (rapid heart) and a leaky value (sp?) which he still deals with to this day and NOPE no flu shot and YEA no flu in his 15 years ;D CC ~

I have had the flu several times. Talk about walking death! I spend a GOOD 10 days very sick. Twice as a teen ended up in the hospital with pneumonia from it.
Angela has had the flu twice....once as a preschooler, and again about 2 years ago. Both times were times she didn't get the shot, and both times she was in the hospital very very sick little girl and I was soooooo worried about her!

I have posted every year about getting flu shots. Of course that is an individual choice but the facts about it and the complications from the flu are documented. By not getting protection you put yourself and others at risk if you contract it. Here is a website if you want to read more about it. It is not failsafe because it protects for the predicted most common strains of flu expected for the year and sometimes that mutates or a new one surfaces. I have watched Ed spend hours at the hospital with people who have serious and life threatening complications from influenza. That is one reason why I am first in line every year for mine. You can have the shot and still get lots of minor "flues" but all it takes is ONE bout with full blown influenza and you will realize the difference between a flu and INFLUENZA. It can take you three weeks to a month to recuperate from...and that is IF you don't develop complications. www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/keyfacts.htmJackie

Good points, Jackie.
I've never had the flu, in fact I never seem to get sick even when the kids snot and sneeze all over me. My husband thinks I'm an alien, LOL!
I DID get the flu shot a couple of years in a row when I was helping my Mom take care of my Dad. He was down to less than 7% lung capacity from years of smoking, and a flu would have finished him off, so I was very careful even though I've never had it.

Two years ago, Lia and I both had flu shots- Roger and Ross did NOT. They both got Influenza A-very sick people- and Lia and I did not and believe me, we share glasses and kisses at our house. So now EVERYONE gets a flu shot. Nancy

Laura...I usually don't get sick either. The year I got the flu...I mentioned over and over to Ed..."Well...I had my shot...and on time too...and YOU gave it to me." He finally sheepishly admitted to me that ...he had forgotten to put the vial in the fridge when he brought it home from work (it needs to be refridgerated) and it spent the weekend in his briefcase. Their office was about out of it so he went ahead and gave it to me anyhow....NOW I go in and get it from his NURSE...LOL.
Here's to a happy and healthy and flu free winter to all of you!
Jackie
