Hi Everyone,
My dad was diagnosed with cancer last week. The recommended treatment is chemo injections that are going to cost about $1,500 per month. This is the 20% portion not covered by Medicare for the chemo drug (Vidaza).
Do any of you know about this situation and what people can do for funding? I have asked the Drs office for forms for financial aide. My mom and dad have a very small savings, and the cost of the drug will easily wipe it out. I'm just wondering what do people do if they have no savings?
What a crummy situation. We are dealing with this news (it is not curable) and now the financial side kicked in. We all feel just sick over the whole thing. He was given 1-3+ years if the treatment works. We are not telling him about he costs, because he will just refuse treatment.
If any of you have any ideas about this, please please please let me know. My whole family appreciates any help.
Thank you!!
Jodi

social services at the hospital is the way to go...these people know the ins and outs of finding a good suppliment to cover the 20%, if he doesn't have one thru part D.
in missouri, we have Sr Rx...which is like medicade that picks up the rest...your state should have something like that, too....it will cause you some shifting of funds, and a mountain of paperwork, but the end result is no worries about payments, and peace of mind financially, so that you can deal with the tasks at hand.
Our relay was last night...and I'm a prayer warrior at carepages for our little ones dealing with this beast. I am so sorry you have to walk this path with your papa....the beast SUX!
In our prayers,
e & molly kate

Hi Jodi I am sooo sorry about your dad. I HATE cancer. Now I am not sure what the laws are regarding cancer treatments and medicare but know my grandma was forced to basically go broke before they paid it all in full. Now that was a while back. BUT I do however know that most every drug manufacturer has a patient assistance program. They will essentially give him for free the meds he needs for chemo if you can show need. I would google the maker of Vidaza read their webpages and ask about patient assistance programs. Believe it or not the drug companies do a lot of this type of work but it's something they don't actually SOUND OFF to the world. If this doesn't work for you I can find other companies that offer this type of assistance. There are many but try going straight to the manufacturer first. You'll hafta have the doc fill out forms then they usually send the meds straight to the dr.'s or hospital who is delivering the chemo. Good luck hun

I am so very sorry for you and for your dad. If all else fails you could contact Montiel Williams has he does help people with medications. The social worker at the hospital should be helpful, and be sure if you get a suplimental policy that it covers preexisting conditions.

We are still looking into funding options - but there is no easy answer yet.
One of the biggest problems is that his short-term memory is not that great, and having to explain the same thing to him again and again is emotionally draining. We are taking him on a trip for father's day this weekend. He is supposed to start treatment when we get back (that is if he remembers that he agreed to have treatment!).
Thanks for the prayers and support!!
