Susan
If you have been seeing this dentist for awhile, my question is how has he been in the past? Is this a one time thing, or is it the way he truly is? Might be worth getting another dentist.
You don't need the referral for the orthodontist.
I hope this all works out. Our dentist advertises that she welcomes special needs patients. Maybe you can find one there.

In looking back, I guess he really always has been a creep!!! No one in our family has had to have much dental work, so we go twice a year for cleanings and xrays and at the end, the dentist comes in and does a quick check........so just not all that much contact with him. He has been polite in the past, but not a cheerful guy by any means. And again.....since all the kids have had such good relationships with the hygienists, that seemed like the important part.
So, I guess I did realize that he was "personality challenged" and not the kind of guy I wanted to spend lots of time with...............but I had never seen this side of him; the attitude that made me so upset this time. He just acted like, because Emily had Down syndrome, there was no reason to even bother with straightening her teeth or worrying about her palate.
And Stacy..............SO true!!! I do NOT want to give another cent of my hard-earned money to this guy. The hygienists are not making a huge profit from cleaning our teeth and being kind to us..........it's HIM who profits. We won't be going back. And I am going to pursue an orthodontist for Emily.
