Abby's dad called today early and said that Abby and her mom were visiting a doctor. He called back later to say he was driving to the doctor's office.
Abby has been very tired lately and both her parents and her teachers became concerned. The doctor ran bloodwork today and also did a urinalysis.
Abby has been on thyroid, and that is being checked. A regular CBC will be done. However, the doctors are also testing her because they are concerned about leukemia.
The very mention of that word terrifies me, and I know her mom and dad are very concerned.
Please pray for my sweet little granddaughter. I can't imagine life without her, and I can't imagine my son losing his baby girl.
Thank you.
Char

Char, Prayers coming your way from Ohio.... Hopefully, its her thyroid. That will make you tired. Maybe her med needs adjusted. I'm sure the doctors are covering all bases, which is a good thing. Keep us posted.

Oh Char...sorry to hear this ...know it's distressing. Surely it is not but...even if it is...that too is manageable these days and not usually a fatal diagnosis. So hang in there and hopefully post a positive reply soon....
Love ya
Jackie

((((((((((((((((((((((((HUGS CHAR))))))))))))))))))))))))) I will definitely have you in my prayers, you and your sweet granddaughter. Like others have said the good thing is that these things get checked out right away and are usually treatable, whatever it may be. My mom and I were just talking about this because I just got good results on Noah's yearly bloodwork. I told her that we are actually lucky that we like all parents of kids with Ds test for all kinds of illnesses yearly and are more aware of any changes in his health, personality, etc. Gives us an upper hand. Love, Jessika

Thank you, everyone. I'm so hoping we don't have to wait a long time for any results because I'm a mess and I know that Abby's parents are as well.
My son told me before Abby was born that there are apparently high incidences of some issues with children who have Ds. One thing he mentioned was leukemia. He also mentioned that the recovery rate was often higher than with typical children.
I'm just trying to remember to breathe, to try and rest and to be positive for those I love.

Char, John was diagnosed with AML (Accute Myloid Leukemia) in June of last year. It was a very difficult situation for us. You are right, with our children Leukemia is easier on them. Their treatment, all though is still hard for them. It's not as strong as with typical children. John's treatment was a hard 6 mths of chemo. Most of it was in the hospital. I will say, John did very well. Once I learned how his body was reacting to the chemo, we would usually get a jump start on the meds to keep him healthy. He only got sick 2 times out of the whole treatment. ALL is the other form of Leukemia that I am familiar with. I cant remember the actual name of it. I will say that ALL is a 3 yr treament. With John, he skipped ALL (which is usually 1st) and went to the AML. I do agree with Jackie, it is the better form to have. John's percentage was an 85 percent full recovery. After all of it was over, they were 95 percent sure that he will never have to deal with it again. You will be in my prayers. The whole family will be touched by this, in a positive way. I know it truly changed my life. It has made me a better person. Please keep me posted.
Praying for you in GA,
Stacy

Char,
The prayers are the easy part, and you have them from our family in abundance. We'll pray for little Abby's good health, and for strength for you and your family as you await the results.
And I believe what you've heard is true, that kids with DS are more likely to have certain illnesses, but they respond to treatment much better than typical kids!
I think the doctors are being extra careful, which is a great thing, but pretty stressful for the family. Hang in there, we're with you every step of the way!
