Our pediatrician ordered a c-spine x-ray on Joy today as part of her yearly physical. We did this test when Joy, who will be 9 this month, was 3, and everything was fine. Still, he just wanted to be sure, which is alright by me!
It was discovered that she does in fact have atlantoaxial instability. A distance between the first and second vertebra of 4.5 mm is the upper limit of the normal range, and Joy's distance is 4.8 mm. Her doctor says we don't need to take any action other than to not let Joy participate in contact sports, or sports in which she may do head-first activities, such as diving and tumbling. He said it's still OK for her to be in dance, to enjoy the slide (feet first) at the pool, and ride her bike, jog, etc. He's checking into whether it's still OK for her to take horseback riding lessons, as he's worried the jostling when she trots her horse may not be a good thing.
I'm not really worried, and know the main headache will be to keep my eyes open for potential hazards for Joy. She's a kid who loves to do cartwheels and somersaults, so I'll probably be hollering at her for a time. She doesn't understand this, so that's a challenge.
Just wanted to share, and see whether those of you who have had experience with AAI have any advice, insight, etc. I'm a little worried about this, but don't want to put the cart before the horse.
Thanks!
Jeni, mom to Joy Daisy

Well, if you would value the opinion of a known quack, my unprofessional opinion is no tackle football, only touch or tag. Also would be good to avoid head on car crashes. Other than that, I'd say let Joy be Joy. But, yeah, do keep an eye on her for any symptoms. But as long as she's not symptomatic, it's not nice to yell. -- Bob

I didn't realize you need to have this checked again. Eric just turned 10, and hasn't had an xray since he was 3. Have to talk to my pediatrician about this. Thanks for the heads up.

Is age 3 a good time to do the xray? Kaelyn will be 3 in Sept. so just wondering if I should ask at her next check up!

Bob, I'm so glad you warned me! I was going to sign Joy up for Pop Warner football this fall, and tomorrow I was going to drive my car into a brick wall! Whew!
;D
Googsmom, I don't know Renee and Kennedy ... I've been pretty absent from Uno for awhile. Are they dealing with AAI?
I wasn't aware another x-ray was in order either. We went in for a physical, and her ped ordered the x-ray ... maybe because he knows how many activities she's in? Not sure. But so glad he did! If you live in central Iowa and need a ped referral, let me know. Ours is great! He's young and very hands-off ... as in only pokes kids when they really need it, and treats with as few meds as possible. He also invited me to his luau in June and I did Jello shots with him in his driveway! OK, maybe that's a little weird.
;D

Jenifer-as long as you didn't do jello shots off his stomach or anything, you're good! hee hee
Central Iowa?? I was born and raised in Monticello-east central Iowa. But I guess now I'm a Texan. Although my husband says I'm not a TRUE Texan because I haven't read/seen "Lonesome Dove".

Brandi, Joy is going to camp week after next in Monticello ... Camp Courageous. It's about a 2.5-hour drive from us, but it's such a phenomenal camp. Are you familiar? www.campcourageous.org

Hi Debi!!!
Wow, it's been so long since we talked. You got me through some dark days when Joy was little, and I'm so thankful!!
I'm also so happy to hear Ariel will be at camp. She's such a sweet girl, and welcomed Joy so warmly last year. Can't wait to see her!
Maybe we can meet ... we come over on Sunday the 18th. We could come into town a little early if you guys want to get an ice cream or something. Let me know!
Jeni

Jenifer, In the picture, which one is the princess? The one on the right? ;D John-John got his x-ray at 6, as they usually say somewhere between 3-6. The first ones he had done, were taken incorrectly. The ped. ortho doc showed me the x-rays, said the numbers don't make sense & then went to Dr. Leskins (sp) site. She showed me that his head was tilted one way, then the other. (You could tell by the angle the teeth were at.) Then she said that was not the one they should read the angle off of anyway. I had to get a retake. I tried to nicely tell the techs where they had gone wrong, but they were not very interested. Was there a reason that your ped saw that made him want a new xray? Pat

Debi-which 10 miles direction are you from Monti? I have a lot of family over in Cascade (dad's side). We were going to go up there this month, but decided to wait, now I wish we hadn't!!!
Jenifer-Yup, I know Camp Courageous very well. My sister's cousin (on her mom's side) has fragile X and I believe he goes there too. My uncle also drives a bus for adults with disabilities in Monti to take them to the store, work, or their day programs. Such a small world!!
