Anybody have kids that are extremely sensitive to noise? Chandler's is very, very sensitive to loud noises. Today was his first basketball game and he sat the entire game on the side lines with his hands over his ears because he said it was too loud.
He also complains about the TV and the radio even when they are at a comfortable hearing level for the rest of the family. He also has some light sensistivity although not as bad as the noise sensitivity.
Any ideas on what to do?

Ashlea,
Yup...Eric is the same way. He can't stand loud noises, or crowds. He puts his hands over his ears too, and he usually screams. I remember last year, our local HUGS group(help us grow strong) sponsored a Christmas party at a local restaurant. Santa would be there, etc. Well, we walked in, and it was packed with people. He kinda freaked out, but I was able to get him in his seat. But then a three piece band started playing Christmas Carols and he went balistic!! Mind you, it WAS very loud, and the room was too small and crowded, but boy, I had to get him out of there FAST!! I remember going back to the car and just sobbing!! I usually don't cry much, but for some reason, that really hit me...I guess I had too much expectations and it just didn't work out. So now we pick and choose where we will take him. We start out small and gradually work our way up. I read from other on this site that it starts to get better as they grow older. Hope this helps......Dolly

Meghan does have some noise sensitivity....she's OK in crowds, loud music, etc - but there are certain noises she HATES! We went shopping for a Christmas tree Friday and they had a chain saw there...well, my daughter FLIPPED when it went on and wouldn't stop crying -- kept saying "no noise, no noise"...and I had to take her and sit in the car w/ her. She hates "machine" noises...vaccuums, etc.... Of course it's gotten worse since she got her ear tubes this week, too
Don't have any suggestions...just wanted to let you know we're experiencing the same thing, a little.

YIKES can I relate to this post Chris is now 12 and I am here to tell you it does get tons BETTER ;D When Chris was little OMG big crowds, loud nosies and such just freaked him out and he ALWAYS COVERED his ears We just kept bringing him to situations like that trying to desenitize (sp) him and with that and maturity, it got tons better. Oddly enough, I will say every now and then, but VERY rare we are in a situation and he will cover his ears BUT nothing like when he was little CC ~

I am so glad to hear that I'm not alone on this one....Noah's ears are sensitive as well. He hates the sound of clapping with a passion. It makes going to a church service very difficult. There is lots of crying and suctioning (he has a trach). I'm thankful for the trach because nobody can hear all of the crying. I put in a Barney in Concert video for him a few days ago and he couldn't stand it either because it had clapping. He also hates loud laughing. We just had his birthday party yesterday and it was awful. Anytime someone laughed he lost it. I'm glad to hear this will get better.
I have a neighbor with a 6 year old with DS. She also is very sensitive to sounds like thunder, basketball hitting the pavement, crying babies, vacuum cleaners, etc. I know this mom will be happy to hear that it gets better with age as well.

Evan is the same way, he gets very upset when it gets too loud.
Last weekend we had about 15 people singing happy b-day and he got really upset. We would love to take him to see the Wiggles, or Disney on Ice stuff like that but we know he would not like it at all, eventhough he loves the Wiggles on TV.

This is my first post to this board, although I've been visiting for a couple of months now. My Morgan is 10 (11 in April) and is STILL sensitive to certain noises. Forget going to see fireworks, unless you're far enough way to only SEE them and not HEAR them! Motorcycles are the same way - Morgan just freaks out! She's deathly afraid of thunder - has actually thrown up from being so upset. She's not terribly fond of drums, either. Other sounds, like the vacuum cleaner don't bother her at all, and she almost always has the TV up too loud. The common thread seems to be the deep bass sound of the noises she doesn't like....not sure what the solution is.......

Russell is 6 and is noise and sensory sensitive. It's weird, certain noises he can't handle, like thunder, but others, Geese quacking, he can't. Most of the time for Russell, the noise issues are coupled with indoors; that is where the sensory stuff gets involved. He does NOT like certain indoor places with noise. He actually cries like it hurts him. We pick and choose where we go with him, and outdoor venues work better for him.

Carter had that with the vacuum for while. He's over it now, but that or when people laulgh and he doesnt' know what we are laughing at he cries very pitifully when he isn't in on the joke. I dont' know what that is all about. The laughing doens't phase him, but other people when he doesn't expect it hurts his feelings (or ears?). I don't know!
I will say personally there are noises I can't STAND! Mostly t he ones described here - crowd noise or basically loud and unnecessary noise makes me nuts. It coudl just be a personality trait.

Our Jason (11) has the same sensitivity. However, we have found that now it's just to the point when it is an extreme noise. For instance, we took him to a college hockey game where the overall din is loud. That didn't bother him - but when they scored a goal he couldn't stand it. With the loud buzzer, the excitement of the crowd and the band, that was just too much for him. He covered his ears when that would happen.
We have found that the more we expose him to crowds, going into stores and restaurants, etc., the better he handles it. I agree with another reply that suggested it desensitizes them the more they are exposed to it.

When Justin was a baby we noticed he didn't like loud noises. He would just start crying and screaming, we kept taking him into crowds and parades and when loud noises would come up we would laugh and clap our hands yelling yea!!!!!! eventually he started doing the same things clapping, and yelling yea!!!!. And now he is fine with the noises except he still doesn't like the smoke detector, ok so maybe I may have burnt something at one time

Boy I can't even think of ALL the sounds that Haley is sensitive to! Babies crying, toddlers screams - send shivers up her spine (thank god she's an only). She adores Hilary Duff, but I hesitate to buy concert tickets since I really think it'll be a bust! We have had to leave the circus because of those booming amplifiers. When we go anywhere that there are loud noises, Haley wears ear muffs. Now I know they don't really do toooo much to muffle the sounds, but seems to help her. At the movies her dear Dad went to one of the employees and asked them to turn the volume down, and they DID. Another funny, we went to DisneyWorld for thanksgiving this year, Haley wasn't feeling great (ended up in the hospital ICU with pneumonia when we returned, but that's for another post , as we were leaving Magic Kingdom the afternoon parade was getting ready to start. Now Haley does NOT go to parades because of the noise, but said she wanted to stay for it. We sat down on and Haley opens her backpack, puts on her ear muffs and is quite content. This little girl (8 or 9) is sitting near us w/her brother. She gets one look at Haley w/her earmuffs, I dont' think this child saw any of the parade! She just couldn't figure out why in 85 degree weather ANYONE would wear earmuffs. Haley my little burst of self esteem ;D never even noticed her looking!

Hi i dont post often, but my son Bejamin is 8 months old and he was the same way it was certain noises that he got upset with like my sister and her family they were loud to him because he cried when we went to visit them, now he isn't hearing out of his left ear and the noise sensitivity kinda disappeared and we r going to a ear nose and throat specialist with him to see if he is losing his hearing at least in his left ear.

I just came across another noise that Jason HATES. I took the cat and the dog to the vet at the same time. No, I don't know what I was thinking taking both animals to the vet . . . AND Jason was with me.
Anyway, Jason loves our cat, but the cat hates to ride in the car and cried the whole way to the vet. That just about drove Jason nuts to hear that cat cry like that. Jason was yelling and slapping his head and the cat just kept crying louder and louder.
So, as to keep my sanity and not get into an accident stressing over the cat and Jason, I turned up the radio and sang! The poor quiet little dog probably thought we were all nuts. LOL Just imagine all of those noises together in one confined place like a car . . . hee hee hee hee . . . especially because my singing is more just noise than actual singing!
Jessie
P.S. Yes, that will be the LAST time I attempt to take both animals to the vet at the same time with Jason in tow!

I have noise sensitivity also. The sounds of clanging pots and pans really hit my nerve endings! I never liked being at a parade either because of the music being loud. I went to a few basketball games and the fan's screaming just about hit my nerve endings too! Football was the same although the getting up and sitting down so much really bothered my knee's. I still have problems with some noises. I don't like bells much or whistle's. I am just a quiet person. I think part of it is my personality too. Thank goodness my boy-friend is like me that way. ;D
