Everything went very very smoothly; except for the fact that I sat in Fazoli's tonight with tears streaming down my face and it's after midnight and I'm still wide awake and have to go to work in 8 hrs..........but here is the update:
Yesterday, Emily and I headed to the new school. Wanted to get there EARLY, to avoid the crowd, and so we could get on the road to Columbus for Emily's 10am eye appointment there. But, when we got to the school, the parking lot was completely full..........literally NO parking places left! Inside, everything was amazingly organized though! We went through one "station" after another, talking to people who represented various groups (Girl Scouts, various athletic groups, insurance companies, the guidance counselors, etc), and finally to her dorm. (Cottage). She will be living in a cottage that houses 12 girls- 2 in each bedroom, who share a bathroom with 2 other girls. There is a kitchen, living room, play room, laundry room, and an office for the staff.
Emily's room mate still has not arrived. One of the dorm mothers knows her room mate and says she thinks they are "perfectly matched". We decorated her room, and headed to Ohio.
(Side note.............her right eye is SO much better, it is amazing!!!! She is not even "legally blind" in that eye!! 20/60! ! ! Her optic nerve still shows damage, and there is some "cupping" that the doctor did not like, but she was otherwise thrilled with the right eye. The left eye is 20/350, but her visual field has improved a little. The doctor thinks this is the eye that was first affected, and more damage had occurred before we even knew Emily had LHON. No change in the meds for now.
Tonight, I took her back to school and we arrived just in time for her to go to the clinic and get her evening meds. We went to her cottage and then I realized that her toothbrush was still in my overnight bag in the van. In the short time I was gone to get it, Emily had gotten out her clothes to wear to class tomorrow, put on her pajamas, and was in bed with a book..............happy as can be! ! She seems totally comfortable there! !

It was nice that you had forgotten the toothbrush so you could pop in unexpectedly to find her in her element. It had to give you peace to know that she wasn't all weepy and homesick as soon as you left It's both scary and exciting to read Emily's unfolding story.

Oh Susan....just sending giant cyberhugs to you. I can SO relate to you sitting at Fazoli with tears running down both our faces!! That is wonderful news about Emily's vision and also.. it IS good that she is adapting so well at this point. I swear that is why God made Mothers, so we could do all the adapting and be homesick while our kids go on their adventures. Some days it feels like a high price to pay but MOSTLY I am glad they are having adventures.
It's just very very hard with any kid and that" little bit more " makes it even harder. I have been thinking aboout your guys. I know I don't post that often but your family is always in my thoughts and prayers. You're doing great girl.. and hey it's already almost Tuesday!! It WILL be a mighty fun weekend and Emily will enjoy seeing her Mom as much as you will enjoy seeing her!!

Jennifer, She has called a couple of times.........not often enough! ! ! Tomorrow, I have convinced (ha ha....didn't take much convincing!) my husband that we should go to Nashville after work and take Emily out to eat and to church. He had talked to a family who lives there about picking Emily up every Wednesday evening to take her to church, so we are going to go and meet them in person first.
It's weird...........Emily has been going to at least one (1week) camp per year in the summer for many years, and I have handled that just fine. But, she has been gone this week only 2 1/2 days and it feels like the longest week ever! This sure better end up being a perfect situation for her, because I'm NOT liking it one bit so far!
