I can't believe my little girl will be 12 in September. She has grown several inches and gained 20 pounds in the past year. She is also developing breasts and pubic hair. I know she could get her period any day. Truthfully, I have done nothing to prepare her for this but did buy some pads so we would be ready. I need some advice, please. Chris

The best advice I ever got on this topic: Kids with Down syndrome tend to be visual learners (This is definitely true for Emily). So, a good way to teach them how to manage changing pads and the hygiene that goes along with it is to actually show them how you do it during your own time of the month. It helps them to see that it's something Mom does, and she's "ok with it". Nearly 11 years later, Emily still groans when she realizes that it's her time.......and she immediately asks me if it's "almost over". But, she almost never needs any help with any of the hygiene.
As an addition to what I showed her, she received a little booklet at school that gave step by step instructions on how to change pads, and who to go to at school if help was needed, etc.
Is that the kind of info you needed?

Thanks, Susan. Yes, I probably just needed reassurance more than anything. Would you believe she started her first period last night. I just told her she needed to wear a pad until the bleeding stopped. Fortunately, the bleeding is very light and she doesn't appear to have cramps. I had severe cramps from the very first period so I was very worried. I gave her ibuprofen just in case. She went to day camp today and the staff said she did fine in the bathroom but needed pads without wings. Maybe she has already seen other girls change pads at school. I know she has been in the bathroom with me many times. Maybe God knew I needed to show her about periods. I am 55 and still having one every month. Geez!

WTG Sarah! It truly gets easier and easier each month....trust me. Emily still hates every second of it; and don't we all? But, most times she takes care of everything and the only way I know what's going on is that I see the little rolled up pads in the bathroom trash. Sending good thoughts for you to STOP the whole ordeal for yourself.....enough is enough!
