I am so excited...Emily and Allen finally got to have their date. She and Allen (who is 10 years older) have been friends ever since she began her arts program about 8 years ago. At one time the director even thought that perhaps they might make good roommates but Emily nixed that LOL. But as Ann the current arts director commented on FB..."They are soul mates".
The sad thing is that this can't happen without a facilitator. And Allen lives near Katie in the S part of town and Emily lives in Pflugerville a N suburb of Austin. About a 30 minute drive away. Thanksgiving will be their next opp when Emily goes to Katie's for the weekend.
Katie said they had a really a good time ...Allen is such a charming man and you would not even know he had a disability until you spent some time with him. I have forgotten how to put pics on here so you can see them on FB.

I love stories like this. So heartwarming! Since they don't get to spend much time together, do they talk on the phone?

I'm so happy for them. It is frustrating about the transportation, what a pain. I think about it often for Patrick. Just yesterday, I walked out of a meeting of a consumer council I participate in and saw a father outside, waiting on his son. The son is an adult with Ds that sits on the same board as a self advocate. I thought to myself....will that be me in 10 years, because Patrick has so few transportation options? But...love will find a way I suppose. My boyfriend lives an hours drive away...which limits us seeing one another to twice a week. You do what you do.

Yes they do talk on the phone...Katie says she calls him her "hunny bunny" LOL. He does not have DS and has normal conversational skills. He lives at home with much older parents. When she can, Katie will have Emily stay and see that they have some time together. But Katie is busy teaching and as I have said before Emily lives 30 miles away in bad Austin traffic.

Allen is a lucky guy to have won our Emily's heart!!!! I'm sorry the distance is a challenge, and hope that it works out. We never know what good things tomorrow will bring! She is fortunate to have such a devoted older sister. You did good, Jackie.
