When I took Courtney 's ponie tale down, I noticed she had a thick crusty layer of skin (at her crown) along with some tiny scabs where she had been scratching the you know what out of it...So, I scratched and scratched gently to get most of it off and then did more when she was in the shower. The ped nurse said to just use a dandruff shampoo everyday. Any of you dealt with this? And other suggestions? Thanks, Jenn

Hi Jenn, I used to watch a boy that is 13 with DS and he had it, his mom got some kind of hair cream from the Dr that she had to rub into his hair, when I talk to her Ill ask her the name of it. Justin still has it also, the Dr told me I wash his hair to often,I wash everytime he gets a bath, every night. Not much help, but Ill get the name for you Becky

My daughter has it too, but she is only 16 months. I put baby oil on her scalp and comb it off with a fine tooth comb. It works, but it does make her hair greasy for about 2 days after. Becky, that is interesting about the hair washing, I too wash Laura's hair every night. I can't really see any way around this though because she is a messy eater and she sweats alot. So her is dirty and NEEDS to be washed.

Reece, my will be 5 yr old in 7 days , had it REALLY bad and STILL has it from time to time. With Regan and Russell isn't wasn't much and let it run it's course.. didn't do anything different.. with Reece we had to use vaseline and comb it out. would be comperable to the baby oil stuff. I find it nasty to look at. I don't know but Reece's hair is also different then the other two so I don't know if it's related or just a coincidence. She has VERY VERY fine hair (beyond the baby fine stuff) and very THIN hair... you can see her scalp all over and although she doesn't have alopecia, her hair can come out in chuncks very easily if you pull to hard with hair bows and things like that... so she just had a strange head! LOL I don't do much for the cradle cap now... I think it's gross and just try not to look at it! LOL.. I haven't seen any for a long time though! And yes, in babies/toddlers, washing their hair daily does not help craddle cap. It doesn't give the scalp enough time to produce it's own oils for the scalp to help it. A.

JENN, YES Chris is 12 and every now and then he gets this spot of dry skin like on his scalp. We use the Head and Shoulders and the Dermatologist (sp?) we took Chris to gave us a prescription for "Luxiq Foam" to be applied to scalp once daily and will say it works like a charm, clears it right up ;D

Jenn~ Emily has battled with this for many years..........never on her scalp, but behind her ears! It's called seborrheic dermatitis, and can occur on the scalp/behind the ears, neck, etc. We have found that if I use a dandruff shampoo keep it cleaned off every time her hair is washed, there is no problem. However, if we miss a couple days......we might have to apply cream to soften and loosen the "crusts". I have used various creams to do this....from antibiotic ointment to baby oil, etc. Anything that keeps that area moist works.

My son Nicholas has this also. We use Neutrogena T-Gel shampoo or another shampoo called Zetar. Both work really well with him.

Tyler is 11 and gets this still off and on. (Maybe because I don't usually use a dandruff or his prescription shampoo on him). Our ped. suggested selson blue (SP) twice a week. However, he went to the dermatologist for something else, and he prescribed Loprox shampoo to be used twice a week. But, as I said, I am bad about using it.

Just wanted to say that I have a dime sized spot in the middle of my scaple where I get something similar in the winter. I use a little head and shoulders and it clears up. I have often wondered if it's a stray patch of eczema.

;D I appreciate all the replies...We started washing her hair with dandruff shampoo everytime we wash now and it has cleared up for the most part. But geeze, I still have to blow dry and comb it all out (the flakes)...She has really pretty hair, but it is very very fine and thin. A, Are you saying Courtney's head is gross? ? I try not to wash it everyday....but every other day, unless she gets hot and sweaty or dirty. Which isn't very often...Miss Priss. It is interesting that so many of our kids have issues with this. Thanks again! Jenn

Liv and courtney have the same hair and YES this is a problem with Liv and WE TOO wash it every other day unless its hot outside or dirty. BUT we use a soft boar bristle brush which I soaked in hot water for 3 days before we used it to make it nice and soft. I brush her hair and scalp before we wash, then right after we brush again with it. If I don't do it her head would be covereed in exactly the same cap as you are talking about. You are not gross its just a ds thing I guess. Occasionally I still find it on her hair. I do find that since I have been only using conditioner on the ends and using as shampoo Dr Bronners 18 in 1 hemp lavender pure castille soap its dissapated a lot cause it rinses out so well. We call her a POTHEAD!!!!!LMAO u can find it at health food stores like whole foods trader joes etc. I love this stuff and am officially addicted but not on my hair..lol... Gels sprays are no good for that either.good luck i know its been a problem for liv since she was about 5

The very first time I remember seeing this stuff behind Emily's ears was when she was about 5 months and the doc explained that it was exactly like cradle cap on the scalp (I have referred to it as cradle crap), but behind her ears. I assumed it would disappear in a few months, but it has continued to be a problem over the years.......14 years to be exact! It's managable now, but I am concerned that this is something Emily will NOT take care of on her own. She hates it when I clean or put cream on this area; especially since she has earrings on and thinks it's going to hurt if anyone touches the area behind her ears. I wonder why kids with Ds have issues with this??? It reminds me of a post Jackie D did many years ago on a skin problem that is common in persons with Down syndrome. I can't remember the name of it, but Emily has a mild case of it..........it consists of red bumps that almost look like "boils" on the buttocks and thighs. Fortunately, Emily only has it occasionally but it sure makes me wish it wasn't one of those "Ds things"!!!

Susan, are you sure Emily doesn't have excema behind her ears? Regan had that when she was born and for years she had it. My mom and a friend of mine both kept saying to put the baby oil behind Regan's ears for it because they thought it was cradle cap. The doc said it was a good thing I never listened to them because it WASN'T cradle cap.. it was excema and NOT to put baby oil on it! Just a thought I guess...
It's funny you mention red bumps .. Russell gets a patch of something from time to time.. it's not diaper rash nor boils... but right now he has this 1/2 inch patch of something on his hiney. Red bumps like boils sounds gross too like Impetigo! NOT what Russell has..but what you are describing! Now THAT is an EW! LOL
Jenn... LMAO.. Well, Reece's "cap" has toned down alot since she is getting older.. but if Courtney's cap looks as nasty as Reece's did.. it was BAD let me tell ya.. then I'd say it was yucky! LMAO.
