Laura, I just re-read your post, quoted below. I think this doesn't bother me with Mikah, my son with Ds, because people used to do it frequently with my older son too. I always figured it was the bridge some people used when they weren't sure how to deal with a young kid. Maybe that just goes double for our kids with Ds? Kaylis CC- It drives me nuts it was almost NEVER done with my typical kids. No one goes up to my friends' kids and asks them to "give them five". I think the main reason it bothers me is because it presumes that he is unable to verbalize, and the little guy CAN talk! The other reason it bothers me is because it is a physical, touching kind of communication, not hugging to be sure, but putting your hands on people that you don't know well. You and I don't go around slapping hands with people we don't know, most likely.

Since this thread was bumped up yesterday I thought I would throw in something here. When we were at the NDSS conference this topic was brought up. The person that was speaking (I can't remember if it was Libby Kumin or someone else), chose to explain it that our kids are simply more mature in the social skills area than in other areas. That's why it seems to be in such contrast with their other skills and maybe seems to stand out with other people. In a way that does make sense I guess. I mean, we as adults, even if we are having a crabby day know that when we are in public we need to act decent to other people . . . isn't that what our kids are doing?
Interesting take on this subject I thought!

Hmmmmm JESSIE girl you said "I guess. I mean, we as adults, even if we are having a crabby day know that when we are in public we need to act decent to other people . . . isn't that what our kids are doing?" In ALL honesty here NOOOOOO for CHRIS, the last thing he worries about when he is having a crabby day is to act decent to other people. Sorry girl, but the TRUTH BUT what I do LOVE in a way is he does not PRETEND everyone knows if he is crabby or happy, KWIM CC ~
