Evening all;
Has any of your kiddo's ever had a fixation with "opening and closing " doors...any door? Or drawers.. cupboards...ANYTHING with a hinge!! I mean he's really into it. He can be in another room, but if he hears me opening the refrigerator door...wham...he's there, waiting to close the door. When someone comes in the house he runs to shut the door after them. Its crazy! I can't load the dishwasher without him trying to close the door. Or the dryer. Its quite a quirky little habit he's getting into. Any suggestions?

Hmm well I can relate.. Gabe is bad that way too. Good thing Ariel gives him plenty of opportunites: for every cabinet and drawer she leaves open ( that would be ALL) Gabe has to run and shut them. As to any good suggestions?? Lol I was hoping YOU would have some!!

Dolly, Same boat....I think this falls as one of the traits on that extra 21st chromosome!!! Actually, I enjoy it most of the time because one of my other 3 children and husband are always leaving a door or cabinet open. Thing that is driving me crazy is......he loves to turn lights on and off. Doesn't matter where we are or what we are doing!!! Connie

DOLLY, Chris use to do that when he was younger and we had all the child locks for drawers, cabinets and such put on which BTW ruined all his fun after a few time of trying he finally gave up ;D CONNIE, Chris too did the lights on and off OMG ALL the time. For us I have to give his Kindy teach and aide all the credit, they broke that habit very quickly. Although I will admit that evey now and then he still will flick the switch faster then anyone I know and for no reason Hmmm well no reason that I am aware of LOLOL Some habits die hard I guess LOLOL BUT he is 99.9 better with that now CC ~

Patrick went through a stage where he had to have doors closed. If he was in a room and there was an open door he's close it. I was surprised that this habit didn't last long and he stopped after a couple of months. Sorry I dont have any advice for you! Mary

Oh boy, yes we know that one well...I feel your pain (and annoyance, LOL).
Meghan's favorite thing to do is close me in whatever room I'm working in...especially annoying when I'm trying to move from room to room to get everyone's laundry put away :-D
Both kids love to close the dishwasher, refrigerator, cabinets, WHATEVER!
The best was when I was about 6 - 7 months pregnant w/ Matthew...It was winter-ish....my grandmother had just fallen and my mom took her to the hospital (broken shoulder)....so I'm home alone w/ Meghan and the dog needed to go out. So I go out (NO SHOES, NO COAT, as is my usual) and I'm down the driveway and I see the side door ....SLAM!.....and I'm like oh nooo....that bottom lock better not be locked (it never is but you never know)....
I run up the driveway....it's locked. So I panic because my mom is going to be gone for hours at the hospital....don't know what to do. I run next door and get my neighbor and ask her to drive to the hospital and get my mom's house key so I can get inside. This will take 1/2 hour atleast.
In the meantime I run around the house and A HA!! One of our bedroom windows is unlocked....something I always YELL at my husband for....thank God he did it that time.
So I hoist my pregnant, barefoot self up thru the window, check on Meghan and haul back to the neighbors before she leaves....
Didn't think it was funny then...but it's funny now :-D
anyways -- we've bought locks for the oven doors...childproof thingies that work great...and latches for all the cabinets and drawers. It's a pain in the behind but it's better than constantly yelling at my kids to "CLOSE THAT xxx!!!" And now that they know they cant get in they pretty much leave them alone.
Good luck! laurie

Cassie loves to close doors too! She always makes sure the front door closes all the way when we leave our house. She closes the doors to the sanctuary at church which turnes into a game between her and the preacher. She wins, or course! She closes the doors to whatever room I am in but I always just assumed it was so I couldn't hear what she was going to do next! Most of the kitchen cabinets are latched shut, but if one is ever opened, she would rather investigate (i.e. take everything out) rather than just close it.

Maybe it is not an obsession? Maybe he is just trying to be helpful...

Jason doesn't really do that, but he does like to lock us out of the house. It's especially wonderful when he combines two of his most distressing habits into one big event:
Last summer when he was returned home by the police after escaping, me and Brian were trying to relax on the front porch, have a cup of coffee, WAKE UP, etc. Well, SLAM went the front door - and he locked it too. We could see him run upstairs to his room - little sh*t!
Thankfully, we had the phone outside with us, so we called my sister and she brought down a spare key. We got in, we all started chatting and wandered back out onto the front porch to re-hash the morning's events - when SLAM - he did it again! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr With ALL of the keys inside! Brian had to get a ladder and climb up to a 2nd story bedroom window to get in.
Takes us awhile, but we have finally learned to have a spare key outside at all times.
He is a much smarter boy then we give him credit for sometimes!

Hmmm, curious isn't it?!

I SEE we all have a common denominator here??? My girl Olivia usta close EVERY SINGLE door in the house and YES I did consider it an obsession cause she was FIXATED and could NOT sit till she knew they were all closed. Pretty funny actually. Although she never slammed em she hates the sound of a door slamming. If it makes ya feel better she doesn't do that anymore but it lasted a couple years. Jessie your story cracked me up....

Dooly thye resone Olivia got the job of putting the detergent in the dishwasher and closing it up and starting it at age 2 is BECAUSE she usta always try to close the dishwasher on me.. Give him a JOB to help you thats how we solved our dilemma the second try. Have him help you throw the clothes from the washer to the dryer. Liv does that with me too . She's actually a GREAT HELPER and its sooo cute cause she takes such pride in anything she does... GOOD LUCK GIVE THAT BOY SOME JOBS!!!!
