Fevers?

HI everyone! I introducted myself on the general discussions board a couple of weeks ago,but I have a question for you all. Payton has NEVER had a fever...she is almost 14mos old and has had pneumonia, bronchitis(sp?), an ear infection, and now, the croup. Im sure she has had some sort of infection before, but NEVER a fever, and because of that many of our local doctor's arent ever concerned when she's sick. My other two kids always had fever with an ear infection and with respiratory illnesses. Has anyone experienced this before with their kids with Ds? I was thinking I should be greatful, but Im starting to think that since fevers are really good for the body(trying to fight off infections) that maybe her body isnt fighting them at all. Make sense? Thanks in advance... Kristen

I can tell you that my daughter, Kodi Lee, OMG her temp when she got sick would shoot right up to 103 or more even if just a sever cold or something. But with Christopher, who I will share has been sick lots, never ever usually has a temp. I have taken him to the Docs just because his behavior has seem worse then the norm and OMG he has been sick with both ears infected, Strep and sinus infections and I had nooo clue. OMG I felt like such a bad mom thinking how did I not know he was soo sick BUT the only clue was his behavior that thankfully got us to the Docs.
So yes I can honestly tell you Chris is not one to get a temp, even when quite sick

Neither one of my kids ever runs a fever. Maggie only did when she was in heart failure and had pulmonary hypertension!
Matthew has when he had the flu. But that was years ago.
I have a hard time convincing docs that my kids are as sick as they are without running a temp. It's frustrating.
Take care. Robin M - Maggie's mom

Thanks for your input. We too found out a few months ago that Payton had both ears infected and had NO clue...no fever, not fussy etc...Ahhh. Just glad we caught it.
Only two days has she ever acted like she felt bad, one being yesterday when I took her to the doctor after not getting better from the Croup (or it turned into something else). The idiot doctor just treated me like a new mom (nevermind the fact that I have three kids) who was over reacting to her "special needs" child. I tried to explain that today was very different for her that was the reason why I was there! Didnt matter, just sent me home with some different medication.
Army doctor's are such idiots......they tell you to bring them in if there is any change in behavior etc...and then treat you like your overreacting when you do if they dont have a high fever. Im never seeing that doctor again.
Thanks for letting me vent...apparently thats what I need to do!

My son Connor rarely runs a fever. I finally have figured out how his body responds : when younger (before age 7) he never had a temp above about 99 with a bacterial infection and would run a high temp that was very hard to control from about age 4 with a virus like chicken pox or RSV. And it was very hard to convince the doctors he was ill without a fever at first. But eventually, I found one that listened and that was great. I usually could only tell his ears hurt with his refusing to drink. He would always eat when sick but no liquids. Fortunaltely now he does get a good fever with bacterial infections but usually gets so sick so fast. He has had strep infection several times this year. He will never complain until he has a fever of sudden onset and he vomits. I urge the doctors to do a strep test instead of just thinking it is a stomach viral thing. ANd I have always been right. We did have a friend with DS that ended up in ICU septic because she had a strep infection the doctor treated as a viral bug for several days until she was serioulsy ill and almost died. So I wonder if there are other kids that do this also.

Paige generally never runs a fever either, whereas my son runs them alot. I actually only remember one in 4 years when she had pneumonia, and the fever came on very suddenly, and she was so lethargic she didn't move. I took her to the ER, and I felt terrible because until the fever hit, she was acting totally fine.
It does bother me in a way only because like others have said, sometimes the dr.s underestimate what is wrong, and it's the same every time, if she has a cold/sinus infection, etc., they make you wait 7-10 days before bringing them in, if there is no fever, and usually she has either strep/sinus or ear issues going on.
I just take her in anyway, I know they get tired of seeing me ;D

Can I tell you the strangest thing with Olivia? Ever since she was an infant they would say with pneumonias etc that she had no fevers. WELL... she had many aspiration pneumonias too and still no fevers I kept saying she felt hot for her but alas no fever. WELL> came to discover that Olivias temp does NOT TAKE UNDER HER ARM or in her mouth. I mean there is a HUGE difference. We figured this out when she was about 8 months old.Ears don't work either. Her temp will read 94.7 92.3 under arm in mouth in ear yet she would have a heart rate of 200.HMMMM . Thats when we asked em to do the unspeakable. The booty temp. Sure enuf her temp was not only higher but if it said 94 that meant she was 105 at least. Its crazy and still like that to this day. She only gets her temp if she is in er really sick sick sick which hasn't happened for a while. Otherwise I tell em they just leave her alone unless she is real sick.Anyone elses kid like this? It took us a go around with every nurse at the docs and hospital to show em what we meant. Now its written in her chart no temp unless suspect fever. OUCH. REALLY WILD they trip out on that. Liv doen't sweat either.

Jace had a kidney/urinary infection for the first 3 months of his life. His ped. (at the time) dismissed all the symptoms because Jace never ran a fever or showed any real discomfort. He was lethargic and was losing weight. The ped. just blamed it on ds. We changed pediatricians and she sent him for lab work immediately. After treating him for the infections, he was healthy as a horse in no time. I still have to watch for urinary tract infections because he has something called hydronephrosis and he still does not run a fever.
