Hi. You were all such a help last time I posted. Any advice or comments regarding this issue will be greatly appreciated!
My son is graduating from VE pre-k next week. He is registered to attend a VE kindergarten next year. Because we had such a good experience with this program for 3 1/2 years, I ASSUMED that if we could just get into a "good" school the "good quality" kindergarten would follow. I wanted a seamless transition. However, two weeks ago I visited the class. I was crestfallen. My son will be lost in the "group" mentality that I found in this classroom. Without going into details, I sensed that the teacher is just waiting for the day she retires. I visited another school's VE class and it was a little better but not much. Both environments are way inferior to where he has been the last 3 1/2 years. I can't send him to either class!!!! The pre-k teachers were young, specialized and enthusiastic. My son was viewed as an individual and valued. I do not see this in the classes I visited. I am considering for the first time the possibility of homeschooling him. I would like to see that he continues his OT, PT and speech. Homeschooling would be my last option but I am certain that I can do a better job teaching my child. I know he could make great gains academically if I keep him home.
I am sad though, because he loves school. It really hurts me that he will not have the friends he so enjoyed. I am no stranger to homeschooling. I homeschooled my two oldest children for three years. However, in Joshua's case I felt that school was so beneficial.
I could sure use some advice on my rights and also I'd like to hear from any of you who are homeschooling. What are your experiences with special ed kindergartens? Mainstreamng is out as he is not advanced enough to go this route.
