Just wondering if any of your kids get overheated easily. My son Andrew who is 6 years old gets overheated and very red in the face when he's out in the sun. He just finished playing his first season of Challenger Baseball (which was so fun) and he didn't do well the last few games because he would get so overheated. We have had this problem his whole life and would like to go on a vacation to Disney or SeaWorld etc. but fear he can't take the heat. We brought wet rags in ice to put on him but they didn't seem to help. He would just lay down out on the field.
Just wondering if this is a DS thing or just related to him.
Thanks, Andrea, Mom to Andrew 6, DS and Kendall 8

There was a questions on the BB a while back about tolerating heat. You might do a search on that and see what comes up.
Sorry, I can't help you. Maggie chills easily so we have the reversed problem.
My son Matthew got some of those bandana type wraps from walmart that you rinse in water, then put in the fridge. You then place them around the neck or forehead to keep cool. He likes them and says they help. I'm guessing you'd have to be careful putting them around his neck during a game. We keep ours in the cooler and he gets them out while in the dugout.
Take care

Andrea, my son Russell is 6 (ds) and is the same way. I do read that some kids w/DS have this problem but I don't know if it's actually a DS thing... Russell doesn't usually sweat, that is why he gets overheated. I am assuming your child might not sweat much either? Because sweat will cool anyone down, so not sweating SUCKS for the child! Although this wouldn't help on the playing field, we have always had to take Russell's shoes and socks off when he over heats. If we don't take Russell's shoes off we might as well call it a day!!! Since he doesn't sweat and feet are bigtime hot and cold sensors, we HAVE to do that for Russell. And amusement parks aren't THAT amusing when it's hot. We just went to Six Flags here in St Louis where we live... we went in the later part of May.. it was VERY HOT that day and Russell was MISERABLE! Thank goodness there were some water rides and a BIG shower type thing in the kids ride area for Russell to get wet with. I think you are doing all you can. For us personally, I don't know if we could put Russell in a summer sport for the same reasons you are explaining. I am not saying NOT to have Andrew NOT do sports, but can they make any consessions for him when it's hot. Does he HAVE to play every game? How 'bout swimming? LOL I am sorry I don't have lots of answers.. but if you are doing everything you can to keep Andrew cool, I don't know much more you can do. We pick and choose activites for that reason... so other than keeping him as cool as possible and keeping him out of the sun some, I don't know what else can be done. I haven't figure that out yet LOL Good luck!!! I am glad the baseball was fun though! A.

Chase too cant handle heat at all. He gets sick and acts almost as if he is having a heat stroke, scares the beejeesus out of us every time it happens. We now just try to keep him cool and give lots and lots of liquids when he is out. Robin

Christopher too gets overheated We even have in his IEP he must have A/C in his class rooms. His new school has central air but the old school they would have to put a window unit in each class room he was in. I tell you every Teach wanted Chris in their room on those hot summer days LOL

Thanks everyone for your replies. Sounds like this is quite common among our kids.
Christie,
That sounds so funny to me when you said your schools don't always have airconditioning. That is unheard of here in Houston. We couldn't live without it in this heat. You must live North of here. LOL I was shocked the first time I realized that cars up north don't always have airconditioning. I'm a native Texan and I like warm weather. I don't think I'd last a month if we had to move up north. LOL
Take care, Andrea

Kayla seems to get overheated also, I think she senses when she is getting too hot and will come in to cool down. In grade school they did not have A/C and we had to supply one, the school would only supply fans!! Now that she is a teen when she gets too hot she gets a bad headache and will come in and lay down for a while. Kayla has been more active this summer since she learned to ride her bike and has lost 5 pounds already! What great exercise!! ~Stacey

Hello. I don't know if some of you know me. Most do here, but, there is another Debbie that comes on here too. Well, I won't confuse you on this. The other Debbie goes by Paige's Mom anyway. I am Debbie the woman who has Down syndrome. I have Mosaic Down syndrome. I am forty three. I have a problem with the heat as well. I tend to get a headache and sometimes pass out. I don't always have a headache though. Sometimes my head will simply feel funny. My head will feel heavy and I will experience light-headedness. I usually know what to do when this happen's. I have found out that eating something salty helps along with drinking water. If I am to be outside for an extended time, I bring along some peanut's or corn nut's and have bottle water with me. This really helps me. I don't have any problems sweating though. I sweat buckets if I am outside for a long time. I tend to burn easily so I often look for a shady place to be. Sometimes I wonder if I am allergic to the sun though. I tend to break out on my face sometimes. I have of course, extremely dry and sensitive skin!

HI YES my girl HATES the heat and MELTS in humidity. Fortunately we live in cali by the beach. When we went to Ohio a few years back Liv seemed to melt and just sleep when overheated. She too doesn't sweat A. When they gave her a cf sweat tst no matter what we did to her she would NOT SWEAT!! They had to do the blood kind that takes weeks. Go to Disney in November the weather is perfect then.
