I just posted two pics of Emily on location at her new job. I have been on the go for almost one month ...just got home a day ago. Frankly I can't remember if I posted or not about taking her to Seabrook....I was using Katies computer so it was a bit awkward for me to post.
She seems to be very happy there and I talk to her on her cell phone most evenings. So far have not talked to Norine who she is working for to hear how its going. Norine is a very busy woman . It is going to be a mega task for miss Em.....the hardest part will be the challenge of answering the phone and taking messages I imagine. It's a Georgian Revival style home...boxy to easy to clean I would think...not too many hidey holes....but it IS four stories...and three flites of stairs so physically it will be a stretch for her. There is an elevator to transport some things from floor to floor.
She attended a self advocates workshop last weekend and I thought it was funny when i asked her about the people there....she began by saying...."well there were two fetal alcohols and two with DS...dont know about the others......" but I think she had a good time. I will keep you all posted as to her progress with this....if it ends ahead of schedule at least she will have had a great time. I posted two pics of her on the job.

Jackie, I saw the new photos and comments and had some questions for you...but, you answered most of them in this post...Is this just a summer job? This post made it sound like it is temporary.... We have some nice folks lined up for Danny's respite care... They own a restaurant in a nearby town and all their kids are homeschooled and take turns working in the restaurant... Pam and I are getting away for a week, the end of July and Daniel will stay with them during that time... Danny is excited about working in a restaurant...Still not sure what we will do with the lovebird? Anyway, I'll be a wreck until Daniel has stayed with them a few times... I imagine you feel the same way somewhat... It is nice that the family in Houston has given Emily a job...Your fortunate to have that connection..... We wish her the best.....Bob & Family

What about time off, hopefully there are others in the area Em's age to hang with. Would love to hear any and all you want to share CC

oh Christie...LOL...I would love to share....helps with my separation angst.... For starters...Norine...the person she is working for...has set her schedule at 15 hrs per week...and plans to up it to 20. Since this is a training period she is being paid the equivalent of 100.00 per week. Because of all the hoop de la with SSI this is being done creatively at this time...in the form of possibly gift certificates...etc until its determined that she is the right person for this job. Then we will go in and request the higher amt of SSI that someone can get when they live away from home and it also allows them to make more money without losing medicaid benefits. Its all very complicated. So far Emily has been included in many of the family activities...Norine who is in her late 40s comes from a very large family and they visit often. Also they are keeping a HS senior for the summer who is an intern at NASA. He is providing some wheels for Em and is also scheduled to give her some academic tutoring. Part of this deal is some physical training as Norine and her hubby are very athletic and Emily has already started a walking program. She has switched from Atkins to the lo carb option on WW along with Norine and her husband. They also have two dogs...an ancient doberman (huge) and a beagle. Emily is in 7th Heaven with this situation as we have no pets...she got really tickled one night as she described how she has to feed them...mixing yogurt into their food cuz they have mega gas!!!! So far her leisure time has been nicely filled and she has also had some ME time. The first weekend there she went to a Houston self-advocates meeting and learned about some Health and Human Services issues...and Norine plans to take her in late July with her to Baton Rouge where she is doing a Partners in Policymaking presentation. We talk with her at least every other nite on her cell phone ....sometimes oftener...and she is very very happy...so guess we shall just see how the job goes. Norine has not communicated much about that yet...and I am just sitting on my phone fingers to keep from calling her to check....I promised I would stay as out of the job part as I could....LOL. So ...thanks for asking and I will keep you posted. If anyone knows of a friendship resource for Em in the Houston/Seabrook area...feel free to get in contact with me. Jackie

Hi Jackie,
I've been a lurker on Unomas the past six years and have posted occasionally. My son Andrew has DS and is 6 years old. I have been reading your posts for years and think you are such a great Mom and Emily sounds so wonderful. Anyway, I'm writing you because I just noticed that Emily is hear in Houston and just a few miles away. I would love to meet her.
There is a group in Friendswood that meets at the Mary Queen Catholic Church and I think it is called Special Friends but I can find out if that's what you are looking for. There is also a residential home called Hope Village in Friendswood and they have a nice tea room for lunch and maybe they have some information.
Andrea

Sounds like there are some great supports built into this job opportunity that will help Emily succeed.....and to have fun in the process. As long as she learns from the experience and feels good about it, I think it will be great. Please let her know we're all thinking about her while she is far from home. Susan
