Hi! I am a mom of seven including Darcie (Ds) who is three. She has contracted Fifths Disease from her three year old brother and has seemed to have it worse than he did. Her rash is more severe than his was and she seems a little fussier than he was. I have tried Benedryl but she still seems uncomfortable. Does anyone have anything that worked for them? I am new to the site and stumbled across it while doing a search. Any suggestions you have would be awesome. Thanks iamamom

Diane,
Fifth disease is a viral illness. You usually have a fever before the rash breaks out. The rash is usually under the skin and looks like "lace". It appears mostly on arms, legs, and face..the face looking kinda like a "slap". Once the child breaks out in the rash, they are no longer contagious. The rash will come and go, sometimes up to a month. The rash is more pronounced if child out in the sun, overheated, or after a warm bath. The only thing you can do is treat the symptoms...tylenol for fever, keep child cool, etc. It usually doesn't cause any complications. Hope your little one feels better soon.
(p.s.) If not feeling better, its always best to call your doc and let him know whats going on...Dolly

HI! Thanks for making me feel so welcome and giving me some different ideas to try. I was a little nervous to post but need a little support like everyone else. Darcie had a bad day yesterday, but I think it was just because it was so hot that she really broke out. She is doing much better today. Hopefully it will run its course soon and she will be a happy baby again. Thanks again for the welcome. I look forward to getting to know you all better. Diane

Welcome Diane, hmmmmm just read this one and now wondering if this is what Justin is just getting over. After 2 trips to the ER in 2 nights and 1 diagnosis of oh yeah this is a good one gagging with red throat grrrrrrrr and the last one the ever famous a virus. He had a low grade fever the first night and gagging, the next night covered in a rash and one vomitting episode and no fever, I just kept him cool only a diaper and today it's almost gone. But have to tell ya I was a little nervous for a while it kinda looked like Scarlet fever and he still has his VSD.

Just wanted to chime in. All 4 of mine have had Fifths and all had it in the summer. My oldest, nonDs had it the worst! We were on vacation and on our way to a family wedding. She was able to go to the actual wedding and little bit of the reception but was miserable. She was low grade fever, red,red face, esp. the cheeks and then a bumpy little rash all over. She was sick for a good week. Good luck- it is contagious.

Well, I think we all have had 5th's here except my oldest daughter who is 11. I know that the Rash on Reece and Russell really dind't bother them though. In fact, you usually get a low grade fever DAYS before the rash that you don't even know it's coming... I am sorry that Darcie is having a rough time with it. Try and keep her as comfy as possible, maybe some Baking Soda baths too! Oh, and if you haven't had it, watch out... it tends to respond to adults lots different then children... when Adults get 5th's they tend to not get the rash but they can get such EXCRUCIATING JOINT PAIN that sometimes you can't move your neck or body or walk. I know, I have had it when Reece and Russell had it last year. It took me a bit to realize what it was because I thought something was wrong with my arthritis.. I had to be bed ridden and on Pain Meds.... It's in the viral family like chicken pox, so you are not suppose to get it twice, but I have had it twice Make sure no pregnant friends of yours come over too! Oh, and Shellk, did you know pregnant women are not suppose to be exposed to 5ths? I know, easier said then done when it was your own child... LOL. But docs say to stay FAR away from anyone who has 5th's while pregnant.... did you get it while you were pregnant? Good luck and I hope your daughter gets well soon! a. PS to Becky, are you sure Justin didn't have Roseola? Sounds more like Roseola than 5th's to me... (I am a doc you know LOL) the rash with 5th's usually comes days later not right after the fever is gone like with Roseola. The rash with 5th's will look more even and a Roseola rash can look different more blotchy at times... A.

This post caught my eye because Erin has it right now !! (I believe). She woke yesterday with the rash on her face & arms. It got worse over the day & is all on her legs now as well. It gets bright red, then lessens, then comes back. She also has low grade temp. I haven't taken her to doc yet, becasue of course.... it occured on weekend & office closed. Our very good friends had it a ciuole of weeks ago & we spent the weekend with them... that is why I am pretty sure that;s waht she has. 'Course she is supposed to go to school tomorrw & they say once the rash is apparent they are no longer contagious... but I don't think they will be too welcoming of the rash

Yep, sounds like it Allisa! Poor Erin. I think most schools don't let you go to school with a rash anyway, contagious or not.... plus you said she has a low grade fever still, so I don't think she could go anyway... I sure hope you don't get it! IF your joints and body aches REALLY bad soon... you'll know why!!!! Adults don't usually get the rash but some RAD pain! A.
