Did you know prenatally that your child had DS? Or did you suspect? Or have no idea at all? I had an amnio and found Sarah had Ds when I was 18 weeks pregnant Were you monitored beyond the regular, check ups...did you have anything extra such as Non stress tests, late ultrasounds, ect? I had weekly nonstress tests and monthly ultrasounds. I also had a fetal echocardiogram at 20 weeks that revealed that she had an AV canal defect Was the heart rate normal during pregnancy and delivery? Her heart rate was normal during pregnancy but kept dropping during labor. When I was over 9cm dilated I had an emergency c due to c-section due to "unreasuring heart tones". What gestation was your baby born at? 39 weeks, 2 days ~ 8lbs 2oz, 20" Was any comment made about their umbilical cord or placenta at birth or later? I don't remember anything being said about the umbilical cord or placenta. Was your child healthy at birth? Did they need oxygen? Sarah was very floppy, wasn't able to maintain her body temperature, had difficulty feeding and needed oxygen for several days. How is your child functioning for a child with DS? She just had her three year evaluation even though she was just 31 months. I do not believe it is possible to get an accurate IQ for a child who refuses to even try half the things that are required when being tested. I was told her IQ is 50 but I think she is more capable than that. I can only say that out of the kids I know with Ds that are around her age, she is about in the middle. The therapists that have worked with her feel she is fairly high functioning. I think part of her delays are because she was so ill the first eight months of her life. She sat unassisted at 11 months, crawled (creeping, on hands and knees, tummy off the floor) at 17 months and walked at 30 months. She has just started to sign and is learning a couple of new signs a week.

Did you know prenatally that your child had DS? Or did you suspect? Or have no idea at all? We had no medical proof, just odd dream that was repeated las half of pregnancy
Were you monitored beyond the regular, check ups...did you have anything extra such as Non stress tests, late ultrasounds, ect? I had about 5-6 ultrasounds and none of them detected a thing..AFP came back with a 1-1800 chance of DS no amnio I was 27
Was the heart rate normal during pregnancy and delivery? Heart rate was normal, yet she was born with multiple ASD's a very large VSD (requiring quarter size patch) and a PDA
What gestation was your baby born at? 1 day before due date 40 weeks
Was any comment made about their umbilical cord or placenta at birth or later? Placenta was normal and posterior and cord had 3 chambers and was of normal length
Was your child healthy at birth? Did they need oxygen? Yes she needed O2 and was on it for 9 days while in NICU for heart problems and did not need it when she was released although we had a pulse ox at home till her surgery at 3 months old
How is your child functioning for a child with DS? Kourtney is 5 now and functions on a high level..She lacks more in the emotional area and is about 3-4 year old level with this..Her speech is hard to understand at times but she speaks allllll of the time and most of it you can understand..She knows all her colors and shapes and can count to 15 and can point out and identify all of her letters of the alphabet..Although she still shows no interest in reading..She writes with both hands has not picked on yet and can draw a circle, straight line and cross, and a few little other marks. Other than her problems with impulse control we have been lucky once her heart was fixed she seems to of had a really nice journey so far only needing tubes and tonsils and adnoids removed.

Did you know prenatally that your child had DS? Or did you suspect? Or have no idea at all?
A Level 3 ultrasound showed a "soft sign" of DS. But it did not increase my chances for having a child with DS. I was surprised!
Were you monitored beyond the regular, check ups...did you have anything extra such as Non stress tests, late ultrasounds, ect?
No
Was the heart rate normal during pregnancy and delivery?
Katie's heart rate was always on the low side. Especially during birth.
What gestation was your baby born at?
She was born 11 days early.
Was any comment made about their umbilical cord or placenta at birth or later?
Nothing said to me.
Was your child healthy at birth? Did they need oxygen?
Katie was pretty good at birth.
How is your child functioning for a child with DS?
Excellent! (now that her heart is repaired). Katie is always learning and wants to learn. She has not actually been "tested" for Cognitive ability, but through the usual school testing they have her at about 30 months. Our problem is in the speech area, we all feel she knows a LOT more than she can actually tell us. She has had some minor setbacks but she is always progressing. So we are Very happy with her how Katie is functioning!
Hugs, Cathy

Did you know prenatally that your child had DS? Or did you suspect? Or have no idea at all? She had one sign in ulrasound (underweight and her head/body weight ratio was normal, while for an underweight baby, the head ratio should have been bigger...) but I ignored this and didn't really think that this could happen to me, despite my mother-in -laws dire predictions that if I wouldn'tm stop having kids at my age, fate would surely strike.....
Were you monitored beyond the regular, check ups...did you have anything extra such as Non stress tests, late ultrasounds, ect? One late ultrasound, which except for the underweight showed nothing. Her heart rate was fine.
Was the heart rate normal during pregnancy and delivery? Yes
What gestation was your baby born at? Full Term,-was a bit underweight but not really- was in the normal range.
Was any comment made about their umbilical cord or placenta at birth or later? No
Was your child healthy at birth? Did they need oxygen? Seem very healthy at brith, No oxygen was needed. But a half hour later turned absolutely blue from her heart defect.
How is your child functioning for a child with DS? She is doing very well, and has an IQ in the range of mild retardation.

Did you know prenatally that your child had DS? Or did you suspect? Or have no idea at all?
We found out Adam was a boy and DS with a high tech ultrasound in our 5th month of pregnancy.
Were you monitored beyond the regular, check ups...did you have anything extra such as Non stress tests, late ultrasounds,
All of the above.
Was the heart rate normal during pregnancy and delivery?
No they actually lost the heartbeat on several occasion. Also many times while doing a stress test. For some reason sometimes his heart rate would stay at a straight line, like 122 for one hour even though he was moving at the time. We always wondered why, and the doctors did not have an answer for us either.
What gestation was your baby born at?
34 weeks
Was any comment made about their umbilical cord or placenta at birth or later?
Something about saving the umbilical cord, but I don't remember why.
Was your child healthy at birth? Did they need oxygen?
He needed oxygen for about 2 months.
How is your child functioning for a child with DS?
Very well, we were told his receptive skills are at a 4 year old (he is 6) He can count to 40 and recognizes to 50, he can also read and write 47 words.
Please don't let this offend you, I'm just curious! This theory makes sense for my daughter, so I'm curious if it's the same for others!
Thank you in advance!

I did not know John would have DS- my pregnancy was normal. I did have some spotting in the first trimester, an ultrasound was done and everything was fine at that time.
I had a regular ultrasound at 20 weeks which showed everything okay except a kidney that was retaining fluid. I had a repeat ultra sound at 28 weeks which showed improvement in the kidneys, but during the ultra sound several doctors were called in to look at some stuff- the only thing they commented to me about was the umbilical cord was 2-vessel. I am quite sure I had a few soft markers besides the kidney and cord, but not enough to warrent any others tests. Down syndrome was never discussed.
I did not have any stress tests or extra monitoring.
Heart rate was normal- I had a quick labor and delievery- all over in about 1 1/2 hours from start to finish. Lucky me it was a breeze.
John was 11 days early
Nothing said about cord or placenta
John was absolutey perfect at birth, stayed with me the whole time. He did develop jaundice which required bili lights and an extra day or two in the hospital. Mostly I think they were waiting for all our tests results to come in to confirm diagnosis.
John is functioning well, quite average for a child with DS. He is physically on the high side, well coordinated and full of vigor. Mentally - hard to say with his limited speech, but did well on his IQ test when he was 3. I would have to guess at average for DS
