Do your kids get ESY? Do you have to fight for it or is it just expected that they will get it? What exactly do they get?
Kaylee can have 5 hours of tutoring this summer--though the goal is not to 'gain' but to maintain what she learned this past year. Some friends in the area have said that if I got my panties in a wad I could push to have her included in the month long summer reading group which is 3 hours a day for the month of July. I actually like for her to have a summer break--but wonder if I'm just being to casual about her academic life? thoughts?

Paige has extended school year. I do not have to fight for it, it is just 'part of the program' for the preschool intermediate unit class - age 3-5(6).
The regular school year ended for her on 6/11, she'll go back to school on 7/6 and have preschool class until 8/4 and then have a 'summer break' until the new school year starts here on 8/31.
In my situation, Paige definately needs some sort of structure more than just 'hanging' out at home and doing things with me all of the time. For the month of August, I am looking into half day camp for 2-3 days per week 9-12, this way she still gets some pleasure ina group setting as well as some academics. You can find some camps that will work off of an IEP, and I'm not sure where you are from, but medical assistance (disability) pays for 2 weeks of camp for kids with special needs.

Jenna was supposed to have ESY and I almost had to fight to get her out of it.
I brought her the 1st day and it was bad. Unorganized and the class she was in had 21 kids, all under 5, most with special needs. There was only 1 teacher and one aide. I told them there was noo way I would leave Jenna there. Not enough supervision, she is sneaky and I know she would have ran out and explored the school the first chance she got.
I feel bad that she doesn't get to go, but I just couldn't leave her there.

Russell gets ESY (had to figure out the acronym first LOL) and I have never fought for it. It's always been a given. He has had it for 3 yrs now and in 3 different states. It has ALWAYS been in his IEP actually.
For all of you that don't have or fight for ESY, I would suggest you mention it AT the IEP each year and get it in writing.
Rentention is a catch 22 for them.. some won't GIVE you ESY unless your child isn't retaining, but NONE of us want to find out that our child ISN'T.
I know Russell is way farther behind then most of your kids but I don't really know if that is a factor. I would assume it's a school/state thing.
Good luck, no one should FIGHT for it!!!

CINDY YES here in Jersey ESY is very hard to get put in the IEP, least in my section of New Jersey I never really fought it because our district did provide a region summer program for Chris since he was 3 years old, M - F, from 9 to 1 for the month of July. I had to drive him there but he got all his therapies, some academics and some social. But this year I did request a true ESY program which we got put in his IEP and since its in his IEP they have to bus him like they do for regular school. It runs for 6 weeks of the summer from 9 to 3 M thru F. It will be held at one of our local colleges and he will be bussed door to door. He will recieve speech there, some academics, social events, lunch and one hour swim every day, weather permitting.
We have never done such a long summer program before soooo I am not sure how this will go BUT for me I know keeping Chris occupied everyday in the summer is tuff He is a man on the move all day long and does tons better with structured time. Sooo we shall see how this works and I figure if he feels tooo stressed and just needs to enjoy those lazy days of summer I can just pull him put
True ESY is not just a given, and in most cases a fight but can be done

Clarice has always gotten ESY. This year it is 4 weeks for 4 hours a day. It is taught by the same teacher she had this last year. The IEP team just lets us know it is available and asks us if we want it. The school sends out a letter each year reminding parents that if they want it, they need to send a note back to sign up for it. It is very easy to get. Kristin

Haley has ESY 2 1/2 hours Mon/Tues/Wed July 6 thru mid August. In RI (at least where I am) I have not had to fight at all - Classroom size is 10 kids with 1 teacher and at least 1 aide (I have it built into her IEP that she needs one on one during ESY). This year we are very lucky - her full school year aide will be in her classroom in ESY ;D. We are sooooooo happy because Lisa is a FABULOUS aide and Haley can't con her. So it should be a great experience for Haley.

Cindy, Here in my town in Indiana, we do not automatically get ESY but, they offer a summer enrichment program. They only had 20 spots available so by the time I got Collin's application in...he was already 5th on the waiting list. I guess I dottled to long. Me and my husband were hymhawing around. We could not decide if Collin needed the ESY or needed a break like the other kids. So far it is working out great. He is enjoying not having to be shuffled from place to place and he's just getting a chance to be a "normal" kid. Matter of fact...I think having a break has even helped with some of his behaviors because he is going to our Vacation Bible School for 2 hours a day this week and they say they have not had on bit of trouble with him (which in school is not like Collin) and he is transitioning wonderfully!!! Olivia will start her ESY July 5th. She will go to summer school from 8 am to 12:20 pm Mon thru friday for 4 weeks. Our esy was cut 2 weeks this year. She will get all her therapies at school as well. The best part about it is that this year summer school takes place at our home school which will make my girl that much more of a confident bigshot. Her teacher also sent home math cutting writing and reading HW. I have Liv do about 4 pages a day. I think Livs behaviors change when she is out of a structured enviroment everyday. I have never had to even ask or fight for it.BUT I would recommend to start asking your childs teacher about it in MARCH if ya want it.

Just wanted to mention that a true ESY program must be stated in the IEP and the district has to provide transportation to and from. Many areas offer, summer enrichment programs or region summer programs, or what ever they may want to call them and those they don't have to provide transportation, some towns do but they by law do not have to. If you don't have ESY in your IEP and those summer programs stop for any reason, the District does not have to provide an alternative. BUT if you have ESY in your IEP then no matter what they must provide.
Also a true ESY is longer then 4 weeks. I don't have the exact amount of days in front of me at the moment but I will look for it.
ESY program must provide academics and approved as an ESY program. Not all summer programs are approved as ESY
We always sent Chris to our Region Summer 4 week program from 3 till 9 years old. Then at 9 I got my district to write in his IEP Chris will recieve ESY. The region summer program was no longer an option as it was less then the required amount of ESY and they would not buss him there Lucky for us we found even a better program that is ESY and the district pays for all, the 6 week program, the one on one assistant and the trasportation to and from.
I obviously can only talk bout Jersey cause thats what I know of BUT if you think you have ESY check your IEP and make sure its written as such. Cause without it stated in the IEP, its the schools way out if they want. And we ALL know how schools love to have a way out

CC ESY is written into Livs IEP. The state of California cut 2 weeks this year from 6 to 4. I'm looking right at Livs IEP after I read what you wrote about ESY and wanted to make sure it was written into this years IEP. I thought it was but started to think hmmm was that last year???LOL!!! budget cuts in cali have made their way to ESY here...

Hey STEFF, how the heck are you girl
Hmmmm well I am not sure bout CA as I only know here in NJ what happens but I am shocked to hear the budget cuts have affectd ESY. Man I am sure CA is a great state but what the heck, if they keep cutting are they gonna cut the regular days of the school year too ?? Hmmmm
I am searching around more on this subject for you, cause personally I think if you have ESY in Liv's IEP you actually could make your district make up the extra two weeks budget cuts or not BUT I need to find more on this, will let you know if I can find the amunition (sp) that you might need

I'm really surprised about what you guys have to go thru for ESY - UNLESS, it is because of the ages of your kids?
PA was always supposed to be one of the harder states to get ANYTHING, and so far, at least in my case, that has been proven true. I get nothing for Paige except Early Intervention services Birth thru age 5 (or six if I prefer to hold her back one year) - birth thru age 3 she got home based services paid for by the county, at age 3 she started preschool - the funding changed from the county to the school district - but it is run by what they call the Intermediate Unit in the county we live in - the Intermediate Unit automatically has an ESY year. It doesn't have to be written into our IEP, it just is how they run. She was out of school on June 18, same as the whole school district, then they have a "break" - which is really IU staff in service days - and go back to school from July 6th thru August 4th, and then they are out for "summer break", which is considered the end of the school year for IU and they start back again on August 31st with all of the other kids.
Now when she goes to Kindergarten, this all stops and there is no such thing as ESY in our County or school district, so that is where camp comes in. And that is something we would have to do totally on our own. County MH/MR will pay for 2 weeks of camp and that is it.
I sure hope by reading this I'll learn what to do when she gets older and ESY is NOT so readily available to her.
Oh and the transportation part, continues on like any other part of the school year. They do pay for it, no questions asked - (even though we drive her to school).
Interesting stuff.

Gee.......what's ESY? ;D
Just kidding.....I know what it is, it's just that we don't ever qualify for it. The school says that I have to prove that Jared will regress & that I'm not able to be his teacher during the summer months.
I'm sure if we really wanted to fight it that we "might" be able to get something done, but we've just decided to find other things to do during the summer.
Hope everyone has great summer!!!
