I decided to go out on a limb and enroll Joy in our church's Vacation Bible School this year. Joy is going to be 3 in two weeks, and our children's church director said she wanted her to attend. I must admit I was skeptical. Joy's attention span is not great, but she is enthusiastic and tries to follow along. So I took her tonight and left her in the hands of our fearless volunteers for 2 1/2 hours! At 8:30 when I picked her up, she was all smiles and so were the VBS workers. They put her in a group with kids who were her age, and she followed right along. She made two craft projects, sang songs, colored outside with sidewalk chalk. Everyone was so excited about having her and they want her to go back tomorrow and Wednesday night. I am so pumped! Just wanted to share...

That's GREAT Jenifer.........Will she go back every day this week? Our Vacation Bible Schools last about a week, and Emily has gone to them nearly every summer. It's good for kids of all ages! Susan

That's so great!
I was just talking to our nursery leader at church who said that the teachers were complaining about a preschooler who is autistic. He has to be held the whole time or he gets upset.
She's trying to figure out what will be best to meet his needs and not wear out his teachers. I suggested an aid just for him. Any ideas out there?
Due to Maggie not having had heart surgery yet, we have to be careful with her exposure. I planned to take her to VBS since I figured that the germs are pretty calm this time or year. But Tim (dh) is afraid she'll catch something. I'm not going to fight him. Unfortunately, he's usually right about these things. I've learned the hard way when to question him and when to let it go.
So glad your little one did well. I can't wait till Maggie gets her turn!

I took my kids last year and they said bring John-John too. They assigned a special person just for John-John. ;D The first day the person the assigned was training for special ed and got more out of John. She couldn't be there the rest of the time so John-John played a little more with the others. They all had fun

MaggiesMom,
My church has a program called Access Junction and it is for any special needs kids. The have what they call the Buddy system where any child is in need of assistance during regular sunday school or VBS they are teamed with an adult or teenage volunteer. It works out great. It allows the regular teachers to do their programing and allows the child to participate or not at thier level. You might want to suggest that your church start a buddy system.

That's great! I am glad she had so much fun. My church's bible school starts at age 5, so Cassie has not really participated with the classes. Since I am the music leader Cassie stays with me and joins each class for music. She knows the motions for every song!
