Good afternoon all,
Has anyone heard anything about how to much iron in kids with down syndrome is a bad thing. Something about there body having the tendency to store iron.

Hi Jeannette, I have not heart anything about that. I think that blood test and doctor can answer your question. Where did you hear about that, btw? Alice

Never have heard such a thing myself Would love to hear where you heard that and any more you could share on the topic. I do know that certain vitamins you have to watch, they do store up in ones body BUT I wouldn't think DS or not DS would make a difference CC

Never heard of it either, Betty takes Iron, poly vi sol, prescribed by her doctor, I don't think he would have her take it if it would cause her problems. HMMMM, interesting though, I'll have to ask about this to him.

Meghan took extra iron her first year as well...now her vitamins only contain the flouride, but no iron. the condition of iron being stored in the body like that is called "hemachromatosis" (or hemochromatosis). It is usually a genetic condition - passed on by the parents - but not always. Both my best friend and my mom-in-law have this...I've never heard of it being more prevalent in DS and I did a quick websearch and came up with nothing. I'd love to hear more if you find anything out. laurie

My husband read this on the Target Nutrition Intervention (TNI)website, the company that we bought the nutravene-D from. They states that regular iron is okay but to have something with added iron is not a good thing as babies wl ds tend to retain iron. They also said to follow your pediatricians advise. I just wanted to know if anyone else new anything about it. My husband is skeptical about giving MeKyah anything with this added iron.

I have read something about this also, but it was a few years ago, right after Jennifer was born. I spoke to my pediatrician and she had never heard of it and told me not to worry too much about it. As long as Jennifer was getting a balanced diet she would be fine. None of Jennifer's other doctor's seemed too concerned about added iron , so I quit worrying.

Here's some info that I found on Dr. Len's web site. Thought I would share Q: Is iron dangerous for children with DS? A: The claim that iron is dangerous is often based on two suppositions, the first being that since iron is present in plaques in the brain of people with Alzheimer's disease, iron must be part of the process of the creation of the plaques. However, it has been shown that plaques in the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease are very sticky, and contain many things that may not have been involved in the initial formation of the plaques. Researchers have still not come to an agreement on exactly what causes the plaques, and how the plaques actually fit into the clinical picture of dementia. (Readers interested in more on this topic are advised to see the website of the Alzheimer Research Forum.) The second supposition as to why iron might be harmful is based on the fact that people with DS have an excess amount of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in their cells, due to the extra 21st chromosome (see my essay on trisomy for more about this). The excess SOD is supposed to make more hydrogen peroxide available, which may react with iron to cause more damaging free radicals. At the present time, the research on this topic is still questionable and certainly ongoing. There is no definitive evidence that this happens, so it's too early to say that all iron is dangerous. I would certainly not recommend a low-iron formula for any infant with DS due to the high risk of iron deficiency anemia in this age group. After the second year of life, my personal recommendation would be that there's no reason to avoid iron-fortified foods, but there's no reason for extra iron supplementation in vitamins unless there is a documented anemia from iron deficiency. If you want to give your child a chewable vitamin and all your choices have some iron in them, pick the one with the lowest amount. (Caveat: women with DS who are menstruating do need iron supplementation to avoid becoming anemic; they don't tend to eat enough red meat to make up for the monthly blood loss.) Below is the link to the page I found it on. It's the very last question on the page. www.ds-health.com/faq.htmHave a great week! Sherri

Robin~ I swear by fiber tablets!!! Fiber tabs give the stools enough bulk to be a bit more firm if the stools are too runny, and can also give the stools enough bulk to move right on out if someone has trouble with constipation!! I'm telling you......FIBER works!!! ~ Susan

Maggie was anemic when she was 1 year old so we had to find ways to add iron to her diet. We tried the drops and that was the pits! So we did the next best thing and added lots of baby cereal to everything she ate. It worked and she has a wonderful blood count now.
No need to worry about excess iron here! We didn't have enough!
