Aaw guys, thank you ALL SO MUCH. It means so much to me to know I have so many good people out there praying for my Dad. As Christie says, he is one tough guy and has been through so, so much.
He is still critical and has "lost his swallow" due to another stroke we presume. They have tried to put a feeding tube in several times but he won't tolerate it so they will probably put in a "peg" directly into his stomach thru the abdomen. The chest infection has more than likely been caused by him aspirating. He tries to speak but he can't, his voice is very weak and we can't understand him but he does seem to be aware of everything we say and is aware that his leg is gone, whereas before the surgery we didn't know if he was actually aware of what was happening, as he was just so ill and slept most of the time.
It is heartbreaking to see him suffer so much and to be unable to communicate. We don't know how he feels about the amputation, when we ask him if he knows what has happened and that it HAD to be done, he nods vigorously but he can't tell us how he feels about it.
He is on anti-bs, heart meds, anti-convulsants (he has been on those since his stroke 2.5 years ago, morphine, oxygen and a saline drip. He was 84 in June and I tell you guys, I would have given up a long time ago.
Again thank you guys, I value your support and my Dad needs your prayers. I will keep you posted.
hugs to everyone,
Stella

K temp appears to be gone but chest still quite bad - it is pitiful to see him with tubes coming out everywhere and being so completely helpless, he cannot even scratch an itch.
I know it is Doctors jobs to save lives but it's NOT ALWAYS the right decision. I love my Dad and don't want to lose him but I can't bear to see him suffer like this. He looks like he wants to cry all the time (well when he's not looking bewildered) and I struggle to hide the pity in my eyes.

Oh Stella.......trust me, I've seen that look before (where I work) and it is so hard for everyone involved, but so so much harder on the loved ones! I hurt for you right now and will continue to pray that your dad can be at peace, be as comfortable as possible, and that he'll know how very much his family loves him. Cyberhugs to you!!! Susan

Stella, We wnt though this 7 years ago with my sister father-in-law, he went in for by-pass surgery and had a severe strok after surgery, could not talk or anything and he cried a lot an dthis guy was also one tough cookie, ended up he needed to have his right leg removed above the knee, and he made it through that and also had a nother mini stroke, his insurance carrier sent him home against doctors orders and 2 days after they got him home he had another stoke this one was worse. I will not tell the rest..But, my heart broke into evrytime I saw Don and I went there everyday with my sister and her DH. I will continue to send TONS of positive energy and thoughts and TONS of prayers to you and your father.
Sincerely hoping things get better
Michele
