Just a thought: The term "Down Syndrome" is not correct for our kids. They do not have anything down, but they all have an extra chromosome. So, we have kids with Extra Syndrome! Alice

LOLOL Alice!!!! ;D Good thought! The words Down syndrome came from the dr who discovered it, and his last name was Down, thus the name Down Syndrome, giving him credit. hugs, Robin

I like it Alice!! Personally, I'd be glad if we could get to the point where we can officially refer to it as simply DS......like multiple sclerosis is referred to as MS, Muscular dystrophy is referred to as MD, etc. Much simpler, and we could skip the whole negative sound of "Down". Susan

;D After coming here and posting "DS" so much... rather than "Down Syndrome".... that is how I think of it... in my head & have even said it once or twice to people until I realized they hav NO idea what DS is !!! Only you all here know what we mean..... we will have to try to spread that out a little more !!

I give elementary school (grade 7-8) presentation on Down sydome and know where the name comes from. Actually my next presentation in October I will ask the kids to come up with another name just to see what they come up with. I will let you know. That is a great idea to see what they really think and adds to my presentation. Thanks for the idea. ;DI also write DS a lot but only because it's shorter and I'm so lazy. Generally when speaking to someone I will say Down syndrome. I wish Dr. Down's last name would have been Dr. Gift, as we think Adam was a precious gift to us.

Down Syndrome doesn't bother me as the name or description of what our kids have. I personally think its ALL in how you say it and feel bout it Meaning if you are positive about it, its just a name But I am with SUSAN, DS works for me ;D CC

CC, I just put it here for fun! I am very fine with "Down Syndrome" term, but Susan's "DS" I like better. Let's spread that out! Alice

In the beginning I thought, that darn doctor - if only he had a name like Mitchell or Smith it wouldn't sound so bad! Now I know I was not alone LOL!

Although I really prefer DS, I wouldn't mind using the term "Trisomy 21".....it does sound a bit technical though.
