Well after a long 4-5 weeks and 3 rounds of antibiotics we are told Cooper has RSV! We went back to the Dr yesterday for the 4th time in about 5 weeks and they tested him for RSV. I don't think he has had it very long, he just started wheezing Tuesday night and we took him back in. It all started in his head and nose and I guess worked its way down. He is so sick and feels terrible. Please pray for us. Does anyone have any experience with RSV and what to do for it? We are using Albuterol Updrafts which wires him but makes him a little better for a little while. Please think of us and pray that we don't wind up in the hospital here at Christmas time.

Prayers on the way!!!!!! Our 7yr old had it when she was 8 months old but unfortunately had to be hospitalized due to misdiagnosis and the ped not listening to mom grrrrrrrr, yes we never went back to that one again. Sorry but all I can remember is they gave her a stronger IV antibiotic and breathing treatments. Prayers headed your way for Cooper to make a speedy recovery.

Prayers headed your way - Evan had a small case of RSV and Pnemonia in May of this year, and we were in the hospital over night. He was able to qualify for his RSV shots again this year but this will probably be the last year. Evan's ped. requested we get a breathing machine (nebulizer) and do breathing treatments periodically. We started out with Albuterol but it made him so hyper, and in doing some research it actually speeds up the heart. We switched to a new nebulizer medicine called Xopenex (Levalbuterol). We noticed it worked better, Evan enjoyed the treatments more, and he wasn't as hyper. Just a suggestion, you can go to WebMd.com and read up on it. It may not cure RSV right away but it may help with his breathing and hyperism better.

Poor Cooper! I am glad it was DX'd right away and I do hope he doesn't get to visit the nasty hospital for it! Hugs to Cooper!!!! Russell had it when he was a baby. He was 8 or 9 months old when he had it. Unfortunately, he had a fever and was laying around for a few days which was common sometimes for him and no big deal, but I didn't take him in because I thought it was JUST some typical viral fever nothing-you-can-do-for-it thing. So, 3 days later Kevin took him to the doc while I was at work and then he went directly to the hosp He was in the hosp for a week. Unfortunately, they put him in the hosp where I delievered him, very small hospital, and they weren't really equiped to handle him and his RSV. They actually neglected him really bad and due to their neglect he wasn't really getting better and one of the only times he ever had a diaper rash was in there. They didn't change his diaper and he had the runs SO bad that it ate his skin. I'd go in to see him and his diaper would be SOAKED but yet they said they JUST changed him! YEAH RIGHT! grrrr and they tried to say Russell had a hernia!!! .. so, I called our Ped and said Russell goes home with me or to another hosp NOW! And, he got transfered to a big children's hosp. The hernia.. was NOT a hernia.. it was the diaper rash that was SOO bad he was swollen But.. he wasn't in the second hosp that long for the RSV because they treated him better. He got anti's and breathing treatments and lots of help on his diaper rash I will say, for Russell, the ped told us that for some kids, it may take a good year to fully recover from RSV and it did take a toll on him for a good year. Russell has servere reflux so he had a nasty cough for a good part of the year following the RSV.. and you could just tell it drained him. I hope Cooper bounces back quickly!!! Sorry to digress and ramble...I hope Cooper is well soon! A.

Poor kid! Huge prayers!
Can you try the neb? MUCH better! My cousin's baby had that and misdiagnosed - none of the warning signs like prematurity, on oxygen, nothing but he got it anyway! I'm sorry you all have to go through that!

See Dr. Leshin's essay on RSV, www.ds-health.com/rsv.htm if you haven't already. Charlie had a couple of bouts with RSV early on. Once we got him on Synagis he avoided any further hospitalizations. We also used Xopenex in a nebulizer at home whenever he got junky in the lungs. Robert was also a 30-weeker preemie, but without the Ds. He got Synagis for his first year whereas Charlie got it for 2 years. RSV is, of course, viral in origin. Antibiotics would be used for secondary bacterial infections, or possibly prophylactic. When Charlie was really sick best treatment was camping out under an oxygen tent with humidified oxygen in hospital with frequent Xopenex treatments and staying well hydrated. I think Synagis doesn't really prevent getting RSV just prevents getting so bad need hospitalization. Now, I hope, my boys would throw off RSV viruses (think there's a whole family of them) like most little kids, would look like a really bad cold. Hope Cooper is better soon. Best wishes and good luck, Bob

Cooper is some better today, he still has a nasty nasty cough. We are using the nebulizer with Albuterol, yes it makes him so hyper!! We didn't qualify for the Synagis injections this year and I can't afford $700 a shot so we didn't get them. Cooper got them last year and up until March of this year. I appreciate everyone thinking of us and I hope you continue praying for Cooper to be well. Thanks

Coopersmom, as with handsome boy Evan, Justin too was switched to xopenex rather than the albuterol, it is easier on the heart and on the hyperactivity that comes along with the steroid.

Adam had RSV while in the hospital for double pneumonia. Bad memories as we almost lost him. He was tranfered 500 miles away from home to a more equipped hospital and was there for 3 weeks. I was told that if the child is under 6 mths old it can be very serious. Well I am not sure what kind of meds they gave him as he had needles sticking out from every part of his body. Good luck.
