Has anyone had any experience with the sternum separating after heart surgery? Cooper had his surgery in January and has had a knot on his sternum since that time. The sternum wire was removed because it had broken. I took him in to see the Pediatrician yesterday because it felt different. He told me yes it had separated and wanted us to go back to the Cardiologist. We will see them on Thursday. Just curious if anyone else had this experience and if so what do they do? Do they repair this? Do they leave it alone? Thanks again for everyones advise, opinions, thoughts and prayers. Wendey

Wendy, Before Collin had his open heart surgery he was a little Pigeon chested but you really could not tell it. Copper sounds like he has the same problem Collin has with his sternum. Since his open heart surgery he has a large lump where his sternum is. His bones never did go back together properly. He almost looks like he has a handle sticking out of his chest. Our doctor told us that since it was coming out instead of going in it was better because it was not restricting his lung movement and if we were to have it repaired it would be all cosmetic and the repair could be dangerous in itself. Collin also has a broken wire in his chest and from what I've found out that's not uncommon and sometimes they just go in make a small incision and pull it out. They ususally only replace the wires if they go back in for another open heart proceedure. Keep me posted as I am very interested in your doctors views on this. Connie

Hi Wendey, I will definitely be thinking and praying for little Cooper! Let us know what the cardiologist says! Well, both of my kiddos have had heart surgery...Aidan's (my son with DS who is 4) sternum healed nicely, no bumps or anything and it looks really good. My daughter had her surgery in January and she has a noticeable bump in her sternum...it doesn't seem to bother her, but I brought it up at our last cardiology appt which was just a couple of weeks ago. He said it was normal to have a bump in the sternum and her's was just that...a bump and nothing more. He said we could get it fixed for cosmetic purposes and I said NO WAY! If it bothers her when she's older, she can do it...but I'm not putting her through something that is unnecessary! Anyway...that's our story. I hope with Cooper it is nothing, also! Let us know! I would think that if the wires have been removed and the sternum has separated that they would have go back and rewire it.
We have never had any problems with the wires and Dereks chest is rounded but what do you expect after 3 OHS.
Good luck and I hope that it is nothing too major for Mr. Cooper.
Hugs
Allison
