We don't post often, but have a few questions
So here is a question, do any of you guys have a trampoline? Or have you heard that one is unsafe for a 4 year-old with DS? It seems like great exercise, and in the past he sure loves those jump houses.
Speech therapy started yeserday, twice weekly. And the therapist is suggesting we brush Andrew every couple of hours on his skin hands and feet. Anyone here do this?

The trampoline i wouldnt see a problem with as long as he has had a AAI Xray to rule out any problems, As far as the brushing, Its a very common therapy for sensory issues  |

I agree with Heidi about the trampoline, Kourtney loves playing on it and it has taught her how to jump better she was a one footed jumper for the longest time. And when she was younger her therapist recommended the rubbung thing as well, I would take the tip of my fingers and lightly run them up her legs and arms and her back and she loved it. I loved jumping on our trampoline. I was much older though, I was an adolescent by then. I never had any problems. I could jump for a long time although my sister and her friend's jump much longer and slept on it during the summer's. It is a great excerise. ;D

Our PTs use the trampoline w/ Meghan all of the time. It's a small one...with a handle for her to hold onto. She loves it but has a really tough time doing it...can't figure out how to bend her knees :-D
to be sure, I'd check w/ your PT.
re:brushing therapy....they've done this w/ MM since she was little-little. at first they started w/ washcloths and sponges w/ different textures then they moved onto the OT brush. Not sure if anyone does it w/ her now (she's 3 1/2)
but we recently went to a new ST and she wants us to do it before each session we do at home w/ her. It can do 2 things....
helps kids w/ sensory 'problems' become more used to things, and i think w/ older kids (our children's age) it helps them become more aware, and more centered and focused before doing tasks.

We have a small exercise trampoline that the kids bounce on a little in the yard. It's only 6 inches off the ground.
One Step Ahead, on line company, has those small trampolines with the handle. They are easier to bounce on too. Our PT recommends them.
We have done brushing off and on for two years now. Maggie's 3. She has sensory issues and feeding issues. It does seem to help. I should do it more...a long with 100 other things the therapists suggest...but there's only so much time in a day. KWIM?

Yes to both !! Erin (4) LOVES her trampoline. I got her one online from Toys_R_Us last year.... It is small with a handle. I had to put it together (only drawback). But it is really nice quality & she uses it daily. Of course now what she likes to do is use the handle to "flip" through...legs up and over.... she is a true gymnast ! So this year I am on the lookout for a gymnast bar. One that can adjust height & she can swing from that. We brushed Erin very regaulary for the first 3 years. She was such an input seeker..... she couldn't hold anything without mouthing it completely. I mean that girl had SOMETHING (even if it was just her fingers) in her mouth 90 % of her waking hours !! LOL THe brushing helped because she recieved the input & stimulus she was seeking then she was able to focus and play rather than seek more. The other thing that worked in addition to brushing was any toy that vibrates...bumble balls are great ( Erin was notorious for breaking them however). Any toy that shakes gave her additional input. And by the way.... she did outgrow that need.... I wasn't sure she ever would... it still pops up every now & again.... but nothing like it used to be Good luck ! |

Allisa - i just came across a barre -- ballet barre? that might be good for what you have in mind...I got 2 catalogs yesterday so let me double check and I'll post. Not sure if it would be heavy enough but it might.

Carter has one but I'll be darned if he'll jump on it. He kinds bounces with his legs straight...Sydney just loves it, though. Figures.

I've heart about these too.
I tried to brush Luke and it helped a lot. I have to start doing it again.
Also, Luke loves trampoline at school (we do not have it at our home).

Russell's last school he was at had a trampoline in the classroom. It was one of those smaller exercise type ones with bars on it so the kids could hold on while jumping.
We personally have never done brushing with Russell but know about it. Like the mom's say, it's very good for Sensory Issues, tactile defensiveness and to also calm kids so they can focus and learn (Autism).
Both sound wonderful if you ask me! Can't hurt to try!
