We did something similar, a combination of Samonas Sound Therapy (www.samonas.com/info/f_info.htm), and the Vital Sounds program. I did some research when it was suggested by his OT, and didn't find much to support it, but didn't find anything that suggested it would be harmful, so we decided to give it a go. At first, we only did it at his OT sessions, but began to see such good results that we purchased the Sennheiser headphones ($130!) and some CDs to do the therapy twice a day at home. Within the space of a couple of weeks, we saw greatly increased laterality - Ethan had previously used ONLY his left hand, and began using his right hand much more. Now he uses his right hand to grip a crayon - YAY! Hand over hand for handwriting was going to be tough for me if he was left-handed, LOL!
His ability to be around noises (like fireworks) was greatly increased, and his hypersensitivity to touch was decreased. It was very effective for him.
One of his tubes came out of his ear, but didn't fall out of his eardrum, and was in there rubbing against his eardrum last fall. The tube was removed and replaced by the ENT, but we couldn't get the kid NEAR a car, because the experience he had riding in the car with the vibration making the tube rub up against his eardrum was extremely painful. Two weeks after the surgery, it was still really bad, and he would scream and cry in the car. I called and asked his ENT if we could resume the auditory portion of his therapy - he gave the go-ahead and within three days he was back to normal. I wonder if we would ever have gotten him to ride comfortably in a car again without the Samonas CD! Yeesh!
I would definitely try it, I'm sure it couldnt' hurt, and you might find that it helps him a great deal! I certainly hope that you have the kind of results that we did, because it will make the hassle of attending the program TOTALLY worthwhile. Ethan's life has been changed for the better because of this! We did a television segment for the Children's Miracle Network about his participation last year.
We are contemplating another program this summer that I have heard good things about, and it incorporates some of the same elements:
