I've heard this too! My friend with the DS 20 y/o son says that they often have to limit his food portions.
We haven't had this issue with Alethea yet. She will eat quite frequently throughout the day, but she does sign "All done" when she has had enough.

Let me just say I am envying you! I had to start C on carnation instant breakfast in his morning milk to get some calories in him! At his three year, he was way off the top of the DS height chart and only about 55% in the weight. I am trying not to be freaked out, but it's hard when they won't eat, too!

Interesting, Kourtney loves to eat. But, it always seems to be something like Tomatoes, apples, grapes, and her staple in life "Jelly, peanutbutter, and bread" She will not say PB&J or Peanut butter and jelly. But, she is very picky as well. Seems like she would rather eat a PB & J instead of her dinner. But, we also have to stick to our guns with that.
I keep saying she can't be mine, because I love anything SWEET, and with her she loves fruits and only corn on the cob or Tomato.

Kristen~ My "baby" boy, Jordan............sigh, he turned 12 today......was a TINY little guy when he was a baby. He was really thin for years, and he ate everything in sight. It was such a great thing because he could and would eat everything I fixed for him, plus more and always had plenty of energy, and was not picky!!! What more could a mom want??? Well.................now, the poor guy is beginning to "fill out" around his chest/abdomen, and butt......and he is HATING it!!! He is afraid he'll get teased by his friends because his brother told him he has "man boobs". He can't think of anything worse. Even the tiny little guys fill out!! Susan

Jason is a very hearty eater, not picky at all. We can put ANY vegetable in front of him and he will eat it. We do have to limit his carbs though - he would eat chips all day if we let him. I will have to say that I'm becoming increasingly worried that I have been a bad influence on him He never used to eat anything chocolate, but now he would eat a whole pan of brownies if we let him. Oops!! He still will not eat ice cream, non-chocolate cookies or candy. He doesn't touch his Halloween candy. For Easter the only candy in his basket were gummy worms and he didn't even eat those. So . . . that's some good news, that he doesn't like candy. It's just those dang chips and brownies! I also think it's a good idea on the portion control thing. When he is full he will lift his shirt and jiggle his belly so we know he's had enough. It's actually kind of funny to see him do that. But, that tells me that he does feel that he is full and he will stop eating when he gets to that point. Wish I was like that! LOL Jessie

Thanks Susan! As a baby Carter ate everything that didn't eat him first. Somewhere around 2 that changed. He does okay, I guess, and will sometimes surprise us by slamming down something like and entire bowl of chili out of nowhere but I long for the days he would eat whatever whenever and be fine with it. Now he will eat really well in 1. a restaurant (he LOVES restaurant soup, but ONLY at the restaurant) and 2. in a shopping cart (I bring sandwiches to the store now). He will eat more pulled up to tha table like a big boy, but that can be sketchy. The doctor said don't worry - better this than the other extreme - but tough to watch. His sister is picky, too, but lord will that girl eat fruit until it shoots out of her. Bad wording because that's true, too, but you KWIM! I keep thinking he resembles my brother a LOT and he was always tall and skinny, so maybe he is taking that route.

I really do BELIEVE its the person's metabolism (sp?) Honestly when I was younger, actually my whole entire life till my late 30's I could eat anything and everything and never put on weight I was very lucky I never had to diet as a young person BUT the bad part is when it came time for me to watch my weight and learn to diet, I am not good at it at all BUT back to the subject I did read somewhere that ones with DS can eat and exercise say the exact same as one that is the same age, height and weight but not DS and the one with DS will have a much harder time keeping the weight off. I believe they mentioned due to metabolism (sp?) Hmmm I hope that is the right word LOL From the time Chris was born I heard its important to watch his weight both ways actually cause when he was born he was tiny and being he had heart troubles we also had to watch that he gained also. Chris has always been one to just stop eating when he is full or maybe in his case lost interest and wanted to move on to something more fun. Eating has never been a big priority for him but what he does eat OMG is sooo high in carbs and I do worry that one day BAM he will just start gaining and gaining and he is sooo active, not sure if thats what keeps him slim now or not or as if they say its just his metabolism now but that can change too I know my one g/f's son who is 23 and also happens to have DS was alway thin and then one day I saw him and OMG he had put on soo much weight well for him it turned out to be Thyroid and since he was put on the meds he lost lots. So I guess as they say its important to have that Thyroid checked yearly. Just more ramblings of mine on this subject CC ~

Diet sodas have been mentioned, and I was surprised to read an article in the paper recently that said a recent study showed a link between drinking diet soda and being overweight. I found the information on WebMD: my.webmd.com/content/Article/107/108476.htm?z=1728_00000_1000_tn_02This topic is pretty timely, Joan Medlen, who is mentioned in an earlier post for her nutrition handbook just released the latest volume of Disability Solutions, and it discusses eating habits and weight gain in individuals with DS. It is presented in the context of making informed choices, and it is an excellent read! www.disabilitysolutions.org/pdf/6-2.pdf

Hmm, my Emily has a healthy appetite (uhoh). But of course you couldn't get all those rolls w/o one! I swear I could put a spoon with nuts and bolts on it and she would swallow w/o batting an eye. Yikes! This poor kid! Between the possibility of not knowing how to "turn off the eating button" b/c of her extra chromosome and the genes she got from me - she doesn't have a chance!!!

Laura,
On the diet soda topic. I have always struggled with my weight and have always drank diet soda. I've heard that it stops you from losing weight many times, but my weird thought process was hey, I don't smoke, I drink only on occasion, let me have my diet pop!! However, I must say that since I have been pregnant I have not been able to drink diet pop, it just tastes too sweet for me. Which is so odd since I still can eat other sweets and I have been drinking diet 7up for years now. Anyway, I have not gained any weight yet during my pregnancy. I did gain two pounds right away and then have lost it. Trust me, it's not due to lack of eating or having morning sickness. The only difference in my diet is the diet pop.
So . . . I suppose maybe there is something to it after all. Funny how I can LOOK like a house and FEEL like the size of a house, yet I haven't gained anything according to the doctor's scale yet! I know, it'll happen, I still have a few months to go!

K, I should probably not say this, cause I think most will NOT like what I have to say on the "Diet Soda" BUT I have found, thats lots of people seem to eat more because they think maybe they are compensating (sp?) by drinking diet soda. Which may be why the diet soda does not prove to be a great thing Anyone else ever notice that?? Anyone KWIM?? CC

Christie.... I ALWAYS laugh when you hear someone at MacDonalds ordering Big Mac, Fries, Icecream and DIET Coke.... With the giant fat and carb overload in the meal...what, is the Diet Coke going to simply wash it all away?? I think not....

Ok, in defense of diet pop drinkers here, I don't order a diet coke with french fries because I think it has some reversal effect! LMAO THAT cracks me up when people say THAT. Hello! I may be overweight, but I'm not stupid.
Like I said, I have always struggled with my weight, so in my teens I switched to drinking diet pop - probably when I was trying a new diet or something. Now, it's just what I like to drink. Regular pop is soooooo sugary and leaves a bad aftertaste for me that I just really don't like it.
It always surprises me when someone can drink either regular or diet pop - Jason is like that - whatever you give him, he will drink. Me, no way, I can't drink just whatever there is available.

Well, I am a Diet Coke drinker but not because I want more out of my fries and burger LMAO. I use to drink regular coke for YEARS and after awhile the sugar and sweetness really got to me. So, I drink Diet Coke because I like the taste. Once in a while I will have a 7-up or Sprite or on rare occasion a regular coke, but I just like the coke without the sugar in it better. And I have lost weight while still consuming my diet coke! I usually only have 1 a day and I usually don't even drink the whole can half the time. A.
