WELCOME TO UNO "me" Abortion is not considered Murder under the Law, pretty plain and simple. One does not go to jail for having one nor does the Doctor or Nurses that preform them. So not sure how you can compare the two. BUT hey we are all entitled to our opinions, even thou we differ BIG on this one And being I am one that said I would not chose abortion for myself and yes I am PRO Choice for others I again say its one personal choice to continue a pregnancy or not. I have noo say in the matter what another does and again I say if it were Murder as you refer why is it legal?? Last I heard "Murder" was not and one goes to prison for that. Looking forward to hearing more bout you and yours under a not So heated post CC ~

one of my good friends ex-girlfriend just killed their baby. oh sorry she called it aborted, but the end result was their baby not just hers was killed. My parents taught me killing is murder. Like I said doesn't matter if you give it a nicer name and make it legal. my sibling has ds. I've checked this site out for years but you hit a sore spot and I could not just read this time. but hey this ain't my thing. so sorry you wont get to know me better. I'm out-peace

Boy, you sure miss a lot when you skip a few days.
I am an orthodox jew and believe that everything is part of G-d's plan. That said, I had an amnio because dh and I wanted to be prepared if something was wrong and we're very glad that we were. It helped us with dealing with all of Yosh's later medical issues to have already known about the ds.
My religion says that children with ds have a very special soul, of a prophet or saint, and that their lives are kept simple because they have only 1 or 2 tasks to complete in this world. I know in my heart that it is Yosh's mission in life to make others happy.
I annot think of any circumstance in which I would have an abortion and would not have even before I became religious. But that is my choice and I have no right to force my choices on anyone else. When I taught in the South Bronx I had to deal with too many unwanted children. Even after 8 years away, I have nightmares about what was done to those children by people who never should have become parents. And Kristen, it is entirely possible to treat your typical children well and be viscious to your disabled one. I called the police on that one and only that child was removed from the home.

YET!
"Making it illegal only makes it that much more unsafe for the woman, whatever the circumstances."
So why is the woman who is terminating the life of her child more worthy than the child? I don't wish for anyone to die from an abortion that is why people need to understand that that fetus is a BABY! The problem isn't unsafe abortions the problem is abortion.
BTW, did it ever occur to anybody that perhaps "50th chromosome" is probably a typo???

Jodi,
The voices have been talking to me for days, saying "Don't touch this one!" LOL. Regardless, here I am. I'm with Christie on this one, I am pro choice, but would not consider abortion myself. The fact that I believe that it is wrong FOR ME doesn't mean that I feel my belief should be forced on everyone. As a Catholic, my feelings are not in step with those of my church, but I believe that God gave us free will, and what each of us do with it is up to us.
I'm quite comfortable with my beliefs, especially considering that we rejected amnio with this pregnancy even though I'm 42 years old. Our reason for doing so was because it would make no difference to us if this baby had DS or any other disability. And I am a total Type A, list-making, anal-retentive, clean freak and control freak. I WANT to know if this baby has DS, but there is risk associated with amnio. If I took the risk because I needed to know, and this baby died, am I any less the cause of its death than if I had an abortion? Would my pure intent based on curiosity absolve me of blame? I still made a choice that I knew COULD conceivably cost my baby its life.
I guess my point is that we all do what is comfortable and what works for us. I would no sooner judge someone for having an abortion than I would judge them for having an amnio because they "needed to know". We ALL have to make those choices for ourselves. For those others who are Christian and had amnio but said they wouldn't abort because it is prevented by their faith, I would say this: Didn't you feel the slightest bit uncomfortable risking your baby because you HAD to know, when God would have revealed the answer to you in HIS time, without risking your baby?
Again, this is not meant to make anyone feel bad, just pointing out to those who seem to believe that the moral high ground is their exclusive preserve, that perhaps others might look askance at THEIR choices. I don't feel that any of us should call the decisions of others into question unless we have walked a mile in their shoes. Unless and until the law is changed, abortion is not murder in this country, and people have the right to make the choice based on their own values.

When I saw this thread and topic I was worried but I as Moderator am very pleased at the way you have handled it and yourselves. From time to time it is nice to debate a topic because I believe it opens our minds to different views and beliefs and makes us see things from a different angle. See something that we may not have thought of on our own.
But, with that being said I can see controversy beginning to start and do not believe that is in the best interest of this site or friendship that have evolved from it to allow it to continue. So for right now I am locking this thread but will not delete it because I believe all of our opinions are valuable. Thank you for understanding, Connie
