In the immortal words of Michael Jackson - she was just ignorant. I have no tolerance for ignorance, so good for you Jodi. Unfortunately, she was probably so ignorant she didn't even pick up on your message. I would have said something like "Gee lady, these days children with all types of abilities are being included in all sorts of things, you'd think you would get with the program. Boy are you out-of-date." Sometimes things happen for a reason, and if that's the way your treated at the front door, (or the phone in this case) perhaps your better off not stepping inside. In the long run, this person may have done you a favor. By the way Jodi, where do you live? I know of some terrific resources in the Philly and NJ areas, but you'll probably tell me you live in Nebraska rendering me totally unhelpful. Sometimes you just gotta say what's on your mind...after all, they are.

Sorry Jodi, that would have rubbed me the wrong way as well. But, sarcasm is a wonderful tool isn't it? LOL You get your point across yet can always quickly turn nice if the person you are dealing with realizes the error of their ways!
I would love to get Jason into boy scouts, but I will admit that I'm a little afraid of encountering just such issues - him not being allowed in or there simply isn't anyone that has any knowledge in how to deal with him. He's not rotten or anything, but I do know that he needs someone to keep an eye on him if we are not around.
I'm hoping once my BIL gets back from Iraq that he will become a boy scout leader now that my nephew is getting a little older and we can have Jason just join their troop/pack, whatever it's called.

Okay - I forgot to mention that the lady stated to me "Most of the kids who are involved with our program are abused..." I KNOW THIS SOUNDS BAD but I wanted to say... "so if I beat the snot out of him, will that make him more NORMAL and can he come then?" I know, that's all wrong... but that's what I thought. Kudos to you for maintaining a great sense of humor. I am still laughing.

LOL... the whole "abused" part of the story and Jodi's "thoughts" on it reminds me of when we were living in IL after our move. We couldn't get services for NOTHING from the state, based on Russell's DS and legal blindness and chronic reflux. Then.... a year later we get the Autism DX... OK.... now we are talking THREE major DX's... complete with the nasty 24/7 reflux. I called some agency to ask if we qualified for services and I give her all his DX's. She then asks me..... "Well, does he have any OTHER handicaps... like CP or something like that?" LMAO.... And my internal reply was... "oh yeah, I forgot about Russell's CP today, must have missed my mind"... LOL... but I didn't say that. Was feeling nice that day I guess. I also remember calling another IL agency that CLEARLY states on their website and flyers qualifications are genetic disorders and vision probs.... Well, they told me "Oh, well, DS is not a genetic disorder here"... WTF? and legally blind and vision probs weren't the same to them either.... don't ASK me who qualified then. I even said their flyer STATES qualifications my son has... but they really didn't MEAN those two things. GIVE ME A BREAK! I think their agency was for issues that can be CUREABLE or short term type of things.... I guess neither applied to Russell. Talk about having a REALLY GOOD CRY and then a good LAUGH over THAT one! Ok.. sorry to ramble and hijack this post... LOL... I have been in a crabby mood today and thought I'd share a past crabby moment when calling for services! A.

Cbean ~ we live in an area of So. Cal. where services stink. We have to drive at least 30 miles (think traffic here ) for half-way decent programs. A ~ I'm still cracking up... "oh yeah, I forgot about Russell's CP today, must have missed my mind"... LMAO!!!!! Jodi

I think Christine hit on something and that is the lady is ignorant. I certainly don't blame you for being irritated and would have probably done the same thing you did. I do feel that I need to educate as many people as possible about Ds. Ignorance is simply the lack of knowledge and many don't realize that they are ignorant about a subject. I am sure the lady didn't mean to be offensive but was probably totally unaware of how insensitive she was being.
I had a similar experiece with a church school as Susan. About a year and a half ago, I approached the principal of my older daughter's church school and inquired about having Sarah attend school there in the future. His reply was, "well, you know they have special schools for children like her". I felt my face turn red and started sweating. I did my best not to cry and tried to keep my calm. Like Susan, sometimes I just don't have it in me to fight.
I also had the pastor of the church say some pretty stupid and offensive things to me, all out of ignorance. Unlike CC (in Susan's experience), I don't believe these people were unloving and I don't believe they were trying to be unkind but they are definately ignorant!
