I just got a letter from Eric's speech therapist. We are going to meet to ammend his IEP due to his diagnosis of apraxia of speech. His speech therapists wants me to list goals for him. Any suggestions? Eric is mostly non-verbal, except for hi and bye. He tries to say some letter sounds with coaching, but not on his own. I guess my main goal would be some type of communication....whether it be PECS, communication book, etc. He's not into signing..I tried but the only one he will do is eat, and more. I realize how hard it is for kids with apraxia, so I'm not sure how to approach this IEP. Dolly

Dolly,
Have you used the Signing Time videos? I believe they have taught Sarah to sign more than anyone. She loves watching them and is using more signs everyday.
I'm no help when it comes to speech goals. Sarah just turned four and is working on identifying verbs. Her ST will show two pictures (a boy running and a girl kicking a ball, etc) and ask her to give her the appropriate picture. She will use objects and them give them to Sarah if she signs or says the word. She also encourages speech through play. She usually has a play tea party. I know I am not doing her ST justice by my descriptions, she really is wonderful.

Hmmmm DOLLY, its hard for me to say which goals would be appropriate for a child I have never met, KWIM?? Have to say I am kinda of surprised the speech therapist told you to come up with goals, Hmmm doesn't she have some in this area?? Since Chris is 12 his goals, I believe would be much different then what you would be looking for, Hmmm or maybe not Hope you don't mind me asking BUT is your ST experienced with Apraxia?? Could make a big difference if she isn't. BEST of Luck~ CC

Dolly, I know Collin and Eric are basically the same age but Collin does not have the diagnosis of Aprexia so I don't think his goal would be appropriate for Eric. With Collin we are working on begining and ending sounds. Putting 2-3, 3-4 words together etc.... Collin just really started talking when school got out. I know that a lot of people disagree with me but I don't put Collin in a summer program because I feel he needs a break like all the other kids and during this time I really see a lot of progess in him. LIke the other day, I was getting him out of the van hand he kept telling me "Back, Back" I told him no he was to heavy and he yelled at me "NO, Daddy Back" and sure enough my husband had gotten home and there sat his Durango. This is something new for him and has taken him longer to get to than I would like but he did get it and so will Eric! Connie
