Anybody elses kids have this horrible hacking cough? Poor Kaylee--she's had it for a week now and it's just not fun. I don't want to get it. Once she starts coughing she can't seem to stop. I took her to the doc and they said she was fine to go to school--clear lungs and no fever--just this cough. She wants to be at school so bad but the school keeps calling me to say come and get her because she's coughing to loud in class.
She could have this for weeks though--I've heard of it hanging on for a long time. So--she's going to miss a month of school for a cough? Not sure how to get it to go away..lots of fluids and warm showers --but what else?? cindy

Have you tried giving her dextromethoriphan (sp?) - it's found in Robitussin DM, and Delsym, some Triaminic syrups, and several others. It is the main cough suppressant over the counter. Since the doc says her lungs are clear, you could just stop the cough with it, or get in in combo with guifennisen (sp?) which is Robitussin, or Mucinex, & in most syrups for "chest congestion" - it breaks up & thins mucus & helps with dry coughs.
Prayers for Kaylee! and for you to get some rest. Chris too

Justin gets the hacking cough sev times a winter. He has bad sinusitis. The stuff drains from his sinuses, down his throat, and into his upper airway. It then turns into full blown sinus infection and gets antibiotics. It is usually cleared up well with the meds. I also give him Delsym pediatric to help with the cough.....but it only helps some. This is the med his ped said to use. We are on Zithromax now for another sinus infection. He has had this cough almost 2 weeks. We started the antibiotic yesterday (DR waits 7-10 days before prescribing antibiotics in case it clears on its own).
Don't know if this is what you all are experiencing....but this is what we deal with A LOT!!!! LMAO!!!!

Do you have a nebulizer at home? If so, go to the pharmacy and get plain saline for it. (it comes in a bottle that automatically measures out how much you need.) Sometimes nebbing with plain saline will help keep everything moist. It's the equivelent of sitting in a steamy bathroom, without being hot!!!! This is really helpful if you have a kid who's nose gets so crusty you can't clean it out, very dry coughs, and sinus infections.
That said, Angela has been barking for 3 days, and we're supposed to leave on her Make A Wish trip Monday morning.
