Morning all;
Well, Eric had another bout of croup last night...woke up barking like a seal about 10pm. This is the 2x in one month he's had this. He started with the green junk out of his nose yesterday, and then..wham..we couldn't breath last night. I thought we were headed for the hospital (YUK!) but we managed thru it. I had some oripred and quickly gave him a dose, took him out to our sunroom and let him breath in some cooler air, and started xopenex aerosals. Much improved. But the back to back aerosals left him alittle "wired". We were up the rest of the night. I must have heard Elmo do the YMCA song about 30x...really nice at 3am!! He finally fell asleep around 6:30am. My boss, who's Eric's pediatrician, called twice to see how he was doing...great guy!! Tomorrow we are going to University hospital in Cleveland to see a pediatric ENT. He specializes in chronic sinusitis and obstructive airway disease in children. Couldn't be going at a better time...maybe he can suggest something we have been missing. He's been sick since October...our weather has been pretty crazy here in Ohio...right now our temps about 40-50 degrees with alot of rain...flooding...etc. That is the worse weather for Eric...wet, moist, warmer air...I know this sounds crazy, but I'd take the snow any day!

Hello all;
Just got back from the ENT...he wants to schedule Eric for a T & A within 1-2 weeks. I'm a nervous wreck!! I knew he would probably suggest this path...with the sleep disturbances and chronic "green gunk nose". I'm just freaked about him going under anesthesia. They are doing him at University Hospital in Cleveland (Rainbow baby and Children ) and will keep him overnight. I also worry about him post op...I've heard alot of kids with down syndrome have a harder recovery time. He gets dehydrated so easily and bottoms out quickly. I guess I'm thinking worse case scenerio...hec, the little guy already had two surgeries (colostomy and closure) and he did ok. But I'm still concerned. Any encouraging remarks from kids who went thru this would be appreciated....Christie, if I recall, you and Chris did NOT have a good experience with this..did you ever find out why? Dolly

I'll have to let CC post about her experiences with Chris.. I know they had a looong recovery with the T & A Gabe SAILED through his.. they kept him overnight (which I think is most wise when a child has DS) and hewas up in the morning wanting pizza and chilli and all sorts of foods they don't usually recommend right after this. operation We were home before noon the next day and honestly he didn't act or eat one bit different through the week.. It also helped a great deal with sinus, ears and green gunk.

DOLLY, first let me say Chris is sooooo NOT the NORM. Yes we had a very bad experience with the tonsils coming out OMG it was a true nightmare BUT he also had other things going on at the time. His white blood count was way low and probably shouldn't have had the operation when he did. They did not keep him over night and the pain meds did not seem to be working for him He just shut down and would not eat or drink a drop and ended back in the hospital Not to scare you, just being honest but as much as sooo many say having the tonsils and adnoids out were a blessing I have to say for us NOPE 3 weeks after the tonsils were out he got strep and still has the sinus troubles just as bad as he did prior Just in December alone he had strep in the nose twice and now has it in the throat So for us having the tonsils out did nothing BUT like I said Chris is not the norm My bet from all I hear from others is you will see a difference, I really wish I could say the same. None of what I shared is to scare you, just telling you as it was for us. PRAYERS going out from New Jersey for ERIC till you post he is back home and fine and then some Let us know the date when you know, K CC ~

Dolly,
Keeping fingers crossed for you !! Hope all goes well. When Kourtney had her T&A everything went as smooth as butter. She also had tubes put in at the same time. The worst thing with her and the T&A was the AWFUL breath she had after. LOL..
Best of luck to you and the little guy.

I am so sorry to hear that you guys are dealing with this again. I have to say...we have the same crap here....flooding... weather in 40's....hmmm sounds like we live in OHIO!!!!! We actually have an order for Justin to go outside in the COLD air when he gets barking like that, so I know what you mean.
Justin had his surgery last May for the T&A, uvuloplasty, partial soft palate removal. Justin is a medical challenge all the way around....so our experience is FAR from the norm. He was left on the vent for 11 days post-op....mostly for piss-poor care. He has serious resp issues and the idiots never turned him, did PPD's...nothing but left him tied in restraints flat on his back. He had staph, pseudomaonas, pneumonia, and then yeast in his blood. THIS IS NOT TYPICAL....just s!@# care at Columbus Children's Hospital and I was actually d!@# near ready to call a lawyer.
I am sure your case will be so much easier. I will be thinking about you guys and saying some prayers. I know how hard it is to watch your child get sick over and over. God Bless. Please keep us posted!!!

Evening all,
Well, we cancelled Eric's surgery...he is still very snotty, and has a cough. His Pediatrician said he would probably do "okay", but I don't want to take any unnecessary risks. He's back on an antibiotic for his sinisus, and hopefully we can keep him healthy till we reschedule his T & A. Also, we were going to Cleveland for the surgery, and they had a major snow storm...roads were pretty bad and its about a 90 minute drive for us. So maybe its better all around that we wait for a few more weeks. Dolly
