Leukemia? The doctor said they need to test Lauren for that soon.
I didn't know that was a big issue.

Brook has not been tested as of yet. From what i've read, our little ones are a bit more likely to get Leukemia. Not to freak you out or anyone else who reads this. It's a very scary thought for me and I really try NOT to think of it. I did not know there was a "test" for it though but I guess there is a "test" for everything now days.

It's just a CBC blood test to screen for it. We do it yearly as part of Hannah's regular checkups.

Collin has a tendency to get pertchie rather easily so when he had a case that was particularly bad about 4 months ago he was screen but to say we do it as part of his yearly check ups I cannot. He just gets screened for thryoid and celiac. Connie

Is it something above and beyond a CBC? I didn't know there was a "screening" for it. Russell is like Collin and gets petechiae VERY easily.. and they have done blood work for it 3 times and all was good.

They are the same but we just both spelled them differently. I spelled it the correct way LOL... Sorry Connie, I had to rub it in heehee www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=4853It's a fancy word for broken small capillaries/blood vessels but it's nothing you should be worried about or "look for" It's common with kids that strain alot or have coughing fits, etc. It's not ALWAYS a sign of something bad but sometimes it can be a sign of other things. Russell gets it SO dang easy but it's just him...it doesn't mean he is "sick" or it's a sign of something else. A.

Kids with Down Syndrome have 15-30 times the rate of Leukemia as kids with the usual number of chromosones. I think it is 1/1000 kids with ds will get Leukemia. Lia had it and a classmate of hers with ds had it within a few years. ) We live in a town of 11,000 total people. ) The CBC would show it. Usually a really high white count, also decreased Hemoglobin and platelets. She was really pale, so I brought a blood sample of hers to work and ran it. Other symptoms are fatigue, bruising and pettechia (sp),ongoing fevers and sickness. nancy

It's one of those yearly things they should test for; along with thyroid. And yes....a CBC with differential will show them what they need to see.

Worried about what Renee? We are saying that is somewhat common... if you get it from straining.. and getting upset causes a strain and can get Petechiae in the face... I know plenty of kids that get petechiae from just that and it's NOTHING. Don't worry!!!!!
