This really isn't DS related but it could be. Today is the anniversary of the first time I heard the word Cancer. Every year I tell everyone I know to get the test AND to get the HPV shots. HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer. While this is not the only thing that can cause it, it's at the top of the list. All my girls have had the shots. Brook will too when she is old enuf. Girls now days are so lucky they have this series of shots. (Gardacil, 3 shots and your done) Here is a good sight about cervical cancer if you want to check it out. Not trying to scare people, just making sure my friends never have to deal w/ this and reminding people it is real and it can happen. Love...... My oldest has had her series of shots. I have had the cervical cancer stuff myself due to HPV It wasn't fun. I was in my early 20's when I had it. Just curious....would you really need Brooke to do it? Cancer due to HPV is only transmittable if they are sexually active. I am not implying Brooke couldn't be, but I guess I see our girls differently I suppose. Sorry to get personal! A.

Your funny A.... You are right though. HPV is only tranmittable if they have sex but the doc's were not sure if that was the case w/ me. Could'a been. They never really explored the actuall cause, they just yanked it. I just wanna be careful whatever she decides to do

They didn't test your cancer for HPV? Sorry, I am being nosey again LOL The docs were saying you had HPV but possibly not by sex? Can you tell I am confused LOL!!!? You can tell me to hush up any time you know Oh.. a side note... catchy title of the thread... I actually knew exactly what this topic was going to be because of that commercial. Regan goes around at home saying "I am just one less" LOL A.

A... I delt w/ this for a long time and I really can't remember if they tested for HPV or not. Most likely cuz they did thousands of dollars worth of "tests" on me and who knows what they all were. I felt like a guinne pig There is cancer in my family and I did have a virus, but who remembers what kind, i was so sick. They had me on the Cipro for along time for virus something. I figure most likely from hpv. I just wanted to put this out there for all girls to read Also I was going to say, a few years ago a real nice lady lived in one of the apt's who had mosiac ds and had 3 kids and 2 grandkids

About what age do they start the shot series? Obviously Damara is too young, but I was just wondering.

Gotcha Well, Regan started hers when she was 13. I don't know what the "age" is but probably somewhere between 13-19 I have heard is an ok age to get it? A.

They recommend the shot starting at about 11 years old to 26 years.. Technically, girls who may be sexually active,(some as young as 9 years old ) are encouraged to get immunized. Its a series of three shots, the first dose, 2nd dose 2 months later, and the last dose, 4 months later. Its quite expensive, but it seemed most insurance companies were starting to cover it. Medicaid had covered it from the beginning. I would encourage anyone who is thinking of getting the vaccine to check if its a covered benefit. Some offices are requiring it be paid up front due to the expense, even if you DO have coverage. You then would get re-inbursed from your insurance company. Its about $1300-1500 for the series.

Hmmmm this is interesting to me.
In Angela's case, I fully expect to put her on the pill as soon as she gets her period (which could be any day) for a couple different reasons. 1) to have some control and predictability to when she'll have her period each month 2) to protect her from a pregnancy. While SHE may not be intentionally sexually active, she COULD very well be taken advantage of by someone! I have a friend who's 42 (?) year old sister is the oldest living person with Rett Syndrome. She has been institutionalized since she was in her teens. In her 20's she was raped and beaten, and found naked in a shower. They never did find out who did it. She did NOT get pregnant, but she very well could have!
So, this brings me to the HPV vaccine. It hasn't been offered for Angela, and I wonder why? She's almost 12. Who says she won't be sexually active? Who says she won't be taken advantage of by some teenage boy, or adult man for that matter? I would certainly want her protected. I guess I'll have to ask her ped when I see her about why this hasn't been brought up yet.
That said, I'm not sure about this particulary vaccine! It's so new, and there have already been reports about problems with it. I guess I just don't know which way to go since I haven't talked with her ped. about it yet.

Wow I had no idea the series of shots was so expensive. Ashley has had 2 doses and is due for the last one next month. And I am also curious what problems have been reported with it. Ashley hasn't had any adverse reactions other than a sore injection site(upper arm).

I'd read an article about it on MSNBC a few weeks ago, but now I can't find it. However, I did find this one which is similar www.lifesite.net/ldn/2008/jan/08012809.htmlThere has also been a problem with severe pain and fainting, so one has to wonder if that isn't connected to the more severe side effects?
