Does anyone use GoTalk or any other type device for their non-communicating kiddos? Aidan's school is going to start trying it, and dh and I have contemplated whether to buy one that we found online. It is a little hand held thing where you can place different PECS cards into it, talk into it, and when you push the button it talks for ya. Like if Aidan wanted a drink, he could press the "drink" picture and it would say "DRINK"...etc. Here is a website... www.attainmentcompany.com/AB1031005/showdetl.cfm?&DS_ID=2&Product_ID=1568&DID=11There's a ton of different ones out there, but this is similar to the one we found. Anyway...just wanted to ask. Wondered if it would be worth it. Thanks, ya'll! Staci

Gabe just got a Go Talk thro an assistive technology loan..which means his district borrowed it to see if it was a good fit for Gabe. So out of alllllll the many devices out there this is one I do know. I looked at the purchase price for this one and considering that Aiden is so young I would ask if you think me might outgrow it soon, or if you think you should get one on loan . The downside to that is that the district owns it then they might not let him have it when school is not in session (altho some schools let kids have them all the time; it's just that it's the property of the district. Often, Staci kids can use a device like Go Talk and then move on to a more flexible (and expensive!) device. I guess I would explore those options such as a loan before buying one on your own.

CHRIS just got a new one, Say It Sam, you can see it at www.freedomofspeech.com/sayitsam.html Staci, you don't have to pay for it your district will if all agree its a good tool for Aidan. Chris has had one since he was in preschool and this is the third one our district has purchased for him. One of my case managers tried to say if I didn't pay for half they would not let Chris take home to use, just plain BS I tell you and I said to her fine Put that in writing. LOL well you can bet they never put that in writing they paid for the augmentative device and Chris takes it home daily over weekends and all summer long. If you have Augmentative Device in your IEP its up to the district to provide it, service it and replace if it breaks. Its the law Also if you get one make sure they do goals and objectives on this piece of your program too Best of Luck, this particular device you mention I have never used. CC ~

Thanks you guys! We did just write it into his IEP about the device they're going to use...he hasn't gotten it yet, I guess it takes a few weeks...so when we have our next meeting, I'll see what happens with it. Man, CC...Say It Sam is quite pricey, huh!? Wowza! The school district keeps complaining that they have no money to buy this stuff, that they have to "borrow" the device from some company...how do you get around that? Anyway...thank you for your help and advice, you two! I appreciate it! Staci

Hi Staci ~
Ryan is being assessed by a specialist soon for this type of equipment. I'm crossing my fingers - it's so hard to see him struggle to be understood. Good luck to you and Aiden!!
