Regan told me yesterday that in science they are talking about chromosomes and genes in class. She had scanned ahead in her book to the next chapters and it had also mentioned DS. She asked the teacher if they were going to talk about DS.. and her teacher said they would talk about all of it and asked her why... and Regan said because she has a brother that has DS Then the teacher asked if her mom had a karyotype of the chromosomes and to bring it in! So.. Regan asked me if I had one... of course I do! and asked if she could share it. OF COURSE! LOL The teacher told Regan she has never had a student who's parents had a karyotype to share BONUS for my girl!!! See... DS does come in handy in ways we don't think about! LOL Just think... if Regan didn't have Russell for her brother.... A.

A. That is so neat. A little girl who is just about Regans age did a report on DS last fall. She used pictures of Collin and his Karyotype. The report turned out to be really neat and informative. I was really amazed at just how knowledgeable on the subject she is.

WTG, Regan! My middle son(15) was too shy to tell the biology teacher that he has a brother with DS when they learned different types of chromosomal disorders. I would share many things with his class too... So, sorry that he was to shy to speak up in front of the class. Please do not thing that he is hiding his brothers DS from other, no way - all his friends love our Luke. Boris is just to shy at school. Unfortunatly.... I am so proud of Regan!

How cool!! I don't have a karyotype of Andrew's. Now I want one!!
My two older boys go to the same school. Last year Brandon got a new science teacher who also happened to have Nick in another class...so he knew both my sons. I had not met him yet..so he knew nothing about the rest of my family. When he brought up chromosomes Brandon got excited because he knew a great deal about it from Andrew. He started to tell the teacher about DS and the teacher asked how he knew so much. Brandon replied.."because my brother has DS"...and kept right on talking. A moment later the teacher interupted him and said.."Hon, are you sure your brother has DS? Because I have him in another class and it didn't seem like he had DS to me." LOL!!!! Brandon had to explain that he also had a younger brother!! LOL!
I hope Regan gets an "A" for this one! Good for her!!

Thanks guys.. I posted this on the other boards too and a few said they didn't have a karyotype... I just assumed we all had one! LOL I guess I have one then because I had an amnio prior to birth? We still lived in CA and after my AFP came back positive... the state kicks out a free Level 2 US and genetic counciling... so we also got that. I had to go to a specific place outside of out hospital/doc place for the Level 2 and then they said when we had it done...they saw markers and the perinatologist knew Russell probably had DS... and asked if we wanted the amnio.. so we said yes.. and they did it. So.. I got a nice karyotype and full blown 2-3 page report on it two from this genetic lab I just assumed everyone had one.. because.. that is the ONLY true way to prove it! A.

WTG Regan!! I hope everything goes really well, and there is a whole class full of better-informed kids. We also have Em's karotype, but have never really "used" it before. But not that you mention it, it really IS very interesting!!!

How cool for Regan! She'll be way ahead of the game when they get to that section!
A, I have a question for you. We used to have Nicholas' karyotype before our house burned down. By the way, I didn't have an amnio, the doctor gave me a copy after the blood test was done.
Anyway, that's one of the few papers I have not replaced, because I didn't know that I would need it for anything. Do I need it? Should I get another copy?

Hmmm A~ no one ever gave me a copy of the karyotype of the chromosomes. Hmmm are we all supposed to get that?? No one has ever asked me for a copy, is that something we need to have?? Inquiring minds would love to know CC ~

Well, I don't know if you need it or not... I have it in this folder with all my medical check ups from when I was pregnant. I always thought maybe for certain services or if anyone ever said to prove it? But that has never happened.... but....I do have it and would probably freak if I dind't.
So.. I don't know really the answer to that. It's funny... most times you say "I have this DX" they ASK you to prove it, happens ALL the time!... Russell's DX of his AUTISM is GOLD.. let me tell ya.. I need that more then ANY other piece of paper... but no one ever says "You got a medical note or proof of the DS?" LOL... funny! heehee....

That is way cool. Josh did a presentation in 5th grade - most of the kids were great, although some teased him later (said his bro was a retard... jerks). He felt good after, like the kids understood a little better which helped him when Ryan came around.
