I think this may have been discussed before... I can't take Eric chewing on things anymore!! He will chew on anything...toys, books, fingers, feet, anything he has in his hands. I have given him some "chewy toys" from his speech therapist, but I was wondering if anyone has any other suggestions. He seems so orally overstimulated. Dolly

Oh my gosh....Andrew too! He will even bend himself in two just to chew on his shoes...YUCK!!! We got the chewy toys but he wants nothing to do with them. Watch out if you try to offer him a pacifier...woo...he thinks that belongs in anybody's mouth BUT his! LOL! I will be VERY interested in what other people have to say...but don't despair, you are not alone!

Dayton is 7yr... also a chewer... BUT gotten better over time. It like a 'over anxiety/sensory' type thing going on. Since we started meds it has dramtically reduced. If he wants to chew he just going to do it. We found that toothbrushes are great.. not only he getting the chewing down.. but getting clean teeth. I go to the Dollar Tree and buy 4 for 1.00 and worth every dollar I spend!
In our case, we just deal with it and over time get 'past' it.

Ok.. remember when I took that one toy away from Russell because he started to bit on it and it was just getting time to get rid of it? Wellllllll we have come to a chewing stim phase... UHG! He has decided that the string to the Magnadoodle will do JUST fine... and has chewed the wand off via the string and now stims on the smaller version.. as well as the big one still!
I know some kids DS and typical JUST go through a typical "oral" phase... for Russell it's a stimming thing... we have gone from one stimming thing to the next... and yes, this is it. What's a mom to do.... LOL. Also.. Russell sucks his fingers... so he is more oral then other kids... Regan was a thumb sucker and is STILL very oral with things... she is 13 and constantlly has her fingers near or in her mouth.. I kid you not. So I think kids that suck/ed fingers have a harder time in this oral phase... just my opinion and observation with this and my kids. Reece was never a finger sucker and doesn't have an oral fixation like the other two.
Good luck.. other then redirection.. or giving them something "healthy" to chew on for the phase... I don't know what else to suggest. Russell goes through phases of chewing on his blankets even... CHEWS BAD... but I do beleive 2 of his 6 yr old molars are still coming in... so... that probably has a bit to do with it too.

I had a student who used to constantly chew on the neck of his shirt. By the end of the day, half his shirt was soaking wet. This child had a mild cognitive impairment.
Sarah chews on many things, too but hasn't been doing it as much lately. She chews on her thumbs, shoes, toys, books, the cat's tail, etc.

Ethan is a big chewer - and his fingers or particularly thumbs are CONSTANTLY in his mouth, HIS HANDS LOOK AWFUL, they are all calloused. He also likes to chew (and dangle) my robe belt or his Dad's leather belt - YUK! He will bring me his Dad's trousers if the belt is still on and ask for it to be taken off - or if Brian is wearing it he will insist he takes it off!!!! What to do about it? I'm sorry I don't know Our therapist has made things out of tubing (food safe) but he really isn't interested. I am just hoping he will grow out of it...... I too would love any ideas...... Sorry I know that's no help Dolly but at least your not alone with the chewing Elaine.

OK, guys, my son who does NOT have DS, and will be SEVENTEEN next week, is also a chewer. Everything has little bite marks on it. Telephone antennas, remote controls, books, pens/pencils, he used to chew little tiny wholes in the necks of his shirts, but havn't seen him do that for quite a while. The year he was 12, as a joke, we put a baby teething toy in his stocking for Christmas. We went to our inlaws a couple days later (24 hr drive). He took that with him and had it chewed to a little nub by the time we got there!
