Just thought I'd share this... Eric can hardly say but a few words....bye, hi, yeah...thats about it. We work constantly on his speech, but I haven't seen(heard) much progress. Well, Eric is a huge Wiggles fan....watches the tv show and his tapes constantly. If you are familiar with the group, the "purple wiggle" is named Jeff. He is always falling asleep and the other wiggles have to wake him up. They usually ask the audience to help wake Jeff up..."count to three and say WAKE UP JEFF!' Eric loves this! The other day, we were watching his tape and this part comes on. The wiggles count to three and Eric says..."WAKE UP JEFF"!! I almost fell out of my chair! Now it wasn't the clearest pronunciation, but I KNEW what he was saying....and it was more than one word!! YEAH!! It wasn't "MOMMA", but hey, I'll take it! So I have the "WIggles" to thank for this milestone.

We are huge Wiggles fans at my house. Sarah especially loves the "little" Wiggles (the Wiggles as children). There is one episode where they have a pie making machine that will produce pies when you say "wow". This is Sarah's absolute favorite and she stands in front of the tv saying wow. It is too cute!

We can all point our fingers and do the twist here! Everyone has to "Wiggle" when they visit - Emma and Nicki LOVE The Wiggles. We've seen the perform live a couple of times which was SO exciting for the girls. I don't think they quite believed it when the Big Red Car really drove past them and went up onto the stage - FOR REAL! LOL!
That's fantastic that Eric gave you a neat surprise like that. Not sure about your family, but here every video must be played over and over until it's stretched beyond use and we have to get another copy. Repetition is the key I reckon. Emma missed out on a lot of language due to glue ear as a baby sadly - still feeling terrible about that but we were under a specialist at the time so not sure what we could have done Her speech is very delayed. When she does talk it has a very flat tone like someone who is deaf and it's really obvious when you hear Nicki who has quite a vocal range.
YAY for the Wiggles and Yay for Geoff who needs to be woken up all the time!
Cheers Carolyn

Carolyn,
Eric also speaks in that flat tone, like someone who is deaf. I wonder if its a common speech pattern with children who have down syndrome. Anyone have experience with this?

I'd also like to know if it's common. Emma had a SLT and an ENT specialist working with her for as long as I can remember and I know she had glue ear but I thought we were really onto it. Maybe the window is smaller than we thought? ?? We've had numerous hearing tests which are all good and within "normal" range although low tones as in a man's speech may not be heard clearly by Emma. All good cause I can screech like a banchee so she can hear me no worries! Cheers Carolyn

Jameson is 5 1/2 and he cant speak but he imitates all the dances of the wiggles! he tries hard to talk with the vidoe. the other day he was eating and out of the blue he started "singing" to himself by imitating with hand gestures a song the wiggles do! so just cause he cant "sing" it the music is obviously in him!
I hope they come around NY soon so we can see them!

Gotta love the Wiggles. I had a Wiggles ban in my house a few years ago because they drove me nuts. So of course my older boys would put it on to drive me crazy. Then one day I was watchng PAtrick while he was watching them~and he was dancing and trying to sing and really getting involved with it~not just sitting and watching it. Well, of course the ban was lifted and I now love the Wiggles~we even saw them when they came to town last year.
It must have been wonderful to hear Eric say that. I can totally relate becuase Patrick's doesn't have many words and sometimes he will come out with things that makes me understand that he is getting it~he just can't always form it and get it out.

Go Wiggles! I love that they inspired your son to speak, and in a sentence no less! We took Becca, then 8, to see the Wiggles in Youngstown Ohio and it was a blast for all of us. My mother in law lives near there so we were able to stay over which cut the expense. At home we had all memorized the words since Becca had played her Wiggles tapes like a thousand times each, and at the live show the audience stood for much of the show, singing and dancing, and Becca absolutely loved it, as did we! If you get the chance, go see them, it's well worth it. She likes Rugrats more now, and Catdog and Arnold and the Wild Thornberrys (which my husband is putting on right now as I write)But back then she had her Wiggles lunchbox, car, toys, tee shirt from the show, etc, etc. There was a guy at work whose son liked them too and also went to see them, well he and I would sit there at work and sing the songs, it was hilarious.

also, Becca speaks in that monotone voice too. It has gotten a LOT more inflection and range over the last few years. She's 10 now. When she was 7 her language was very limited and the tone really sorta gutteral, but it has improved . Her singing is pretty flat, but her voice now rises and falls much more than then.

I was just talking to Brandon's SLP and I mentioned that "flat tone" when speaking. He says only a few words but when he does make a sound, it has that flat tone to it. The SLP said that kids with ds have smaller nasal cavities and the sound doesn't resonate inside their heads like it does with typical kids. So therefore kids with ds can't hear themselves as well as most people can. I thought that was interesting....it also makes sense when you say they sound like a deaf person speaking. And speaking of the Wiggles...Brandon LOVES them too. He will yell "Wake up Jeff!" but it doesn't sound anything like it.

CC, Oh yeah.....Dorothy the Dinosaur, Wags the dog, Henry the Octopus, and my favorite... "Captain Feathersword". The show is really kinda funny, like in a slapstick kinda way. And it sure beats the "Teletubbies"!!
