Hi Guys! ;D I've waited awhile to post up and introduce our family on this new Bulletin Board...but most of you know us! I am Cindy, married to Scott (14 years!) and mom to Kaylee 8, and Emma-5. Kaylee has Down syndrome and Emma has Erbs Palsey. We live near Portland, Oregon and have been coming to unomas for the past 4 years--I cannot believe it's been that long! Michelle Mc and all her hard work have certainly made it possible for us to network in regards to education and health and family matters. I have learned so much from all of you--and thank God for it! I'm now working as an inclusion assistant in my 6 year olds Kindergarten class for two boys--one boy who has been diagnosed with Autism--very high functioning and another boy who is as yet undiagnosed. So--I haven't been posting much since it's been like 10 years since I held down a job--I'm not used to this schedule!! :)Kaylee is in 2nd Grade and is included in a regular classroom doing pretty good. ;DShe's reading, writing and now doing math! She is a social butterfly with many MANY friends. Would love to meet you all..wish we were going to Ohio... NOW-How do I add a picture of the kiddo?

Cindy, thanks for your post on my son Jameson. Your daughters are adorable!
About the Hanen program, I like it so far but realize is is more about the parents communication skills with the child than the other way around. So i hope it will help me help Jameson.
I love that your an inclusion assistant. I hope I can do that too someday!
Don't be a stranger. and add more pics!!

Hi Cindy, I noticed you are from the Portland area and I had to say "hi". We live in happy valley/pleasant valley area. My son is just over two (ds) and I have a five year old daughter. Life is good. Your girls are darling and it sounds like they are doing well. I am so glad I visited this site. I am enjoying it so much. I visited a while back and had a tough time getting around- I love this new bullitin board format. What school district are you in? Did you attend the NWDS when it was active? We have been attending the new 'bright future' group and learning alot. I thought I read on another post of yours that you wish you would have sought (is that a word ) out additional speech therapy? We have been thinking very seriously about that. We get some through early intervention but... I feel it could be developed upon. Our two year old is just now showing an interest in verbal communication. He loves to sign. I stopped teaching him new signs to encourage words... We shall see. Well, enough rambling- "hi from pleasant valley!"

;D Hey Jenn! Good to hear from you. I've been out of town and started a new job (haven't worked in 9 years..so even though it's only MWF I'm falling apart here! Thank God it's just until mid June..doing Inclusion work in Emma's K-class..two boys with special needs in there...) ::)ANYWAYS..sorry for going on....the school is using touch point math with Kaylee and so for it's working well. She's only adding numbers under 9 together...but she doesn't need the points on the numbers anymore-she can use just straight numbers because she's memorized the dots. (They put 1 dot on the #1 and 2 on the #2 and so on. You memorized where those dots are..and then when you're adding you touch the number in those spots..does that make sense?) Anyways..I would definatley INSIST on this Touch point method for Courtney..and the sooner the better. They just started this year with Kaylee and she's in 2nd grade and turning 9 in the fall.. How's school going for Courtney? hope well!

Monique! I just realized by reading your post more closely that you are just a few days out on this new baby!!! YIKEERSS!! Your son is going to love being a big brother! Gosh, when we brought Emma home from the hospital Kaylee as 2.5 and she went nuts. She danced all around the house saying BA-BY BA-BY BA-By! she would sit RIGHT next to me when I was nursing and she would nurse her baby too!! She was facsinate..and the baby chant never stopped. Eventually those first few weeks it turning into BOBBY! BOBBY! and that is now and forever Emma's nickname. I mean, she does call her Emma now, but out at the park she'll be yelling Bobby! Bobby and when Emma turns and says What Kaylee? all heads turn! Then I get the looks like, you named your Beautiful little girl BOBBY?? oooh it's too funny! Do you have name picked out?? Gosh I can remember it all like it was yesterday and they're 8 and 6 now!! post up a pic as soon as this one arrives, K? Are you going natural or doing the drugs?? i went natural and Emma weighed 10.1! ;D

Tammy-- PLEASE! don't let the smiles fool you. They fight all day long..except when they're playing nicely LOL..probabley about 50/50--you know? It seems as soon as we all get in the car after school they're ripping eachothers eyeballs out just one block down! They don't actually physically hurt eachother--but boy can they argue-and unfortunatley-no thanks to Bugs life (and the Po-po platter..saying) Kaylee is always calling Emma a Poo head. Drives emma nuts. not really sure how to get her to stop. Usually, it's when Emma's being a Poo head!! LOL ;D[/color] They are the best of friends too though. wonderful to have a sis for Kaylee. A God send really. Do you have your kids somwhere on here??

Hey Kendall's mom..nice to meet you..We live out in Hillsboro--is Happy Valley over in Clackamas? I guess I'll check online..type in Happy Valley-geesh, i guess I could just walk down and ask my husband. LOL ;D- Yes, we did go occasionally to NWDS group. Since we live on the West side and it was at 6:30 or 7 ona weeknight it would take us a full hour to get there. AND we'd be dragging the girls--and wouldn't get them into bed until after 9-which I felt bad about. So, we still do things occassionally-did the buddy walk this year-were you there? But I mostly stay informed here at unomas-have been here since (it feels like FOREVER!) over 3 years-and it has been a great huge blessing from God. I have learned SO much, and the great thing is that I can do it from my home-and then pass along info to my friends that don't go to any support groups or get online. Ihave a few friends in this area (Beaverton) who have girls near Kaylee's age in elementary school. They seem to have more trouble because they are in the Beaverton School District and we are in Hillboro. Beaverton's first response when your child becomes school age is to stay "self-contained" and you have to fight till your blue in the face to get your kid included in a regular classroom. in Hillsboro (and BTW, we MOVED OUT of the more affluent Beaverton area to enroll our kiddos in Hillsboro schools-which is supposedly a lower income school district and has more minorities. I say-Thank God We Moved!) they start with the kiddo in the regular classroom and offer a consultant from special programs to come in and do adaptions and modifcation-they provide an inclusion assistant if needed (which Kaylee has) and I really haven't yet had to argue about Placement at all. To me, it was well worth the move. Anyways, would love to get together with you if you are close! ;D Sorry for rambling
