ROFL Jackie..............you reminded me of one of the (one??) "bad mommy" things I did years ago with Justin. He had the Nuk paci and was pretty attached to it. We used to "enjoy" putting it in his mouth upside down, just to watch him (using only his tongue) flip it rightside up. You had to be there. It was so cute!
I forgot to mention that a friend whose kids were my kids ages told me that her doc recommended the same thing that has been mentioned here..........cut a tiny piece out of it, then a bit more, etc. After a while, the child will toss it and want nothing else to do with it.

My next to youngest child sucked his thumb. He had a pacifier. He had a "feeling" blanket which was white. He was in love with the satin binding. He gave up the pacifier first, the thumb second and eventually, the worn out blanket. He never, ever had an ear infection.
My baby did not want a pacifier, did not suck his thumb and couldn't have cared less about a blanket. He had countless ear infections, had tubes, and eventually had a T&A at about age six.
I guess I've always been pretty casual about pacifiers and thumb sucking. I didn't get all too excited about toilet training either. Believe me, there were other things that really got me going so I think we just have different things that are important to us.

ok, even though I posted already.. I have to say... Some of OUR kids need the oral stimulation due to NOT eating or drinking by mouth. How else would they talk or even have some indication there mouth was there. Not saying it good or bad... but unless you been there and done that, you may not truely understand!
Dayton has the perfect teeth and never a cavity... he suxs a pacifer till he was 6yr... Courtney who only sucked till she was 8months old... and she needs braces. Joshua was a middle finger sucker and gradually went to a pacifer... still on one..he 4yr.. and no problem with his teeth.
Guess it all a matter of opionion... and let you know.. oral stimulation is another some kids have to have them..

Cynthia,
Please don't take my dilemma as a condemnation of people who use pacifiers! Like everything else, it is a personal decision and we all do what works for us or our kids. And I understand better than most about the oral stimulation, as my son Ethan who has DS was one of the kids with intense sensory and oral-motor issues (gagged and vomited when we got to solid foods!). So I think I've both been there, done that, and understand perfectly.
I just don't like them for my kids, plain and simple. And I want the darn thing out of Aidan's mouth.
Last night was so much better! It only took him about seven minutes to quit crying and go to sleep. Woo hoo! We saw the doctor yesterday, and it turns out that Aidan doesn't have an ear infection, he's cursed with a paranoid mom. ROTFL!!! His eardrums were pink and healthy, and they moved well when the doctor did the puff test. Since we've been doing the runny nose thing for eight weeks, and my other kids have allergies (with the exception of Ethan) he decided we should try some Zyrtec, since Aidan is clawing at his ears and has post-nasal drip going on. He got his first dose yesterday at 10am, and by this evening, I had stopped wiping his nose! I was walking around with Kleenex 24 hours a day. It may be a cosmic coincidence, but we'll see. We're going to try it for ten days, then quit and see what happens.
I think this binky thing is going to be easier than I thought. (Knock on wood). Thanks everyone for the awesome suggestions, if we have a setback, I'm going to try the cut a hole in the binky idea. What a clever plan!!!
P.S. And thanks for the WOOOSH, Cathy. You're such a pal!

LOL, A. It's almost the witching hour (a.k.a. Bedtime). We'll see how he does tonight. It was awful the first night, not bad last night, and he went down for his nap today without crying at all!
A little confession though, I was out having coffee with a girlfriend this morning (a rare treat!) and Aidan was with me, and started fussing. I saw a binky in the bottom of his diaper bag, and ALMOST gave it to him so I could prolong our chat, but at the last second decided it would be STUPID!!!!! Especially since he's doing so well without it. Wish me luck tonight! I may be on here later looking for you to prop me up, so please stay close to your computer, LOL!!!!

Glad to see you are holding strong Laura!!! Our dilemma right now is putting Ellie to bed without rocking her first. I've told you guys before how Jason's mother would never rock him or let anyone else rock him when he was a baby? Well, we've gone slightly overboard with Ellie. LOL Now, we are going through the same pain as getting rid of the binky by having to put her bed while still awake. It was less than 10 minutes that she fussed last night, so it's getting better. I made the awful mistake of looking back at her after I put her in her crib and seeing her cry - UGH! Talk about ripping my heart out! LOL BTW - what day is Aidan's birthday? ? We missed it, didn't we? Jessie

Nope, didn't miss it. My little guy is one year old today!!!!!! That was the fastest year of my life..... Happy Birthday to my little punkin'!!
Good luck with the rocking thing Jessie. Blaaah. We did that with Victoria, and she had difficulty making the transition. We did the Ferber method, and it took about three nights. You've probably heard it, put them in bed, check back in five minutes, then ten, then 15, then 20. Don't take them out of the bed, no matter what! The first two nights were awful, but it got much bettter, hang in there it will get better soon!!!! Laura

Didn't want to jinx myself, but after his story and rocking last night he only fussed for about 2 minutes, then went to sleep. I'm not sure we're completely done yet, but the first night was the really bad one. We are going out of town for a few days next week for a conference(Traverse City here we come!) and I want this done before the in-laws babysit him. I'm making sure there are no pacifiers hiding anywhere before I go, because they'd give it to him in a minute, even if I asked them not to!!!
