Well we saw the Eurolohist today. He said he wasn't sure if it was his testicle because both sides are filled with fluids. We go for ultra sound next week. He will get sugery in Ottawa since the only time he has needed anesthetic it was there. Sure hpoe they can book us early enough. I hate the waitng game of not knowing what is wrong.

Sharen, Adam had an undescendent testicule that they need to operate on. But when we saw the eurologist he discovered lots of fluid in both testicules and a small growth so we are going for ultra sound on the 22nd. I've been with this board about 2 years I think. And I WILL NEVER LEAVE. ;D ;D ;D I guess you guys are all stuck with me. ;D

Well we had the results and Adam is due for surgery in Ottawa on September 29th 2005. I wish they could do it earlier. The last time he had anestiology he reacted really bad. And that was only for a short period for teeth extractions. Actually he had a reaction to the medication (which he had had before with no reaction, his heart rate dropped drastically and a 10 minute procedure turned into 2 hours) so it is a little more fritghening now to have hin put to sleep. That is why we go to Ottawa as the anestiololy team there have dealt with him before. We we're told thought that he will defenitely loose the right testicule. Would you beleive the doctor actually told us it may make him infertile. As If we'd worry about that now Tha!!!

Claire, I think Charlie would prefer that I not talk too much about his private parts, keep them private. But I'm sure he wouldn't mind if I could share some info that might be helpful to you and Adam. Charlie had bilateral orchidopexy, bringing down and fixing both testes in the scrotum, when he was about 18 months old performed by an excellent pediatric urologic surgeon at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Charlie had one undescended testicle and the other was not fully descended and fixed, could move up and down. So surgeon fixed both. Even at that age and in a former 30 weeker preemie with Ds, it was day surgery. Maybe a little easier on Charlie than the hypospadias repair he had had done six months earlier and certainly easier on him than was his recent T&A. My impression, though it's a bit uncomfortable to think about it, is that the surgery is fairly simple and straightforward. So I think you're right to be most concerned about the anesthesia. And think it's a very good idea to get Adam into the hands of a good pediatric anesthesiology team who have dealt with him before. Now, maybe too much info, more than you'd want to know, I believe it's correct that having an undescended testicle increases slightly the risk for testicular cancer. And surgical correction doesn't really lower the risk, but does make it much easier to examine the patient and detect any problems. So, there's not a great deal of benefit to the procedure, but the risks of the procedure are so low that it is still clearly worthwhile. And I'm a bit surprised that a urologist would even mention the fertility business. I think there are only two or three documented cases of a male with Down syndrome causing a woman to conceive a child, while there are many instances of a male with only one testicle doing so. Have you seen the movie Meet the Fokkers? The Dustin Hoffmann character introduces himself to his son's in-laws by identifying himself as one of those instances. I think I would double check with the urologic surgeon that the game plan is to remove one of Adam's testes, only if there is good cause to do so, but to keep one good, healthy testicle in a good place. Then I don't think there's any particular urgency to getting this done. Maybe you just want to get it done and over with, which is understandable. Charlie had his done when he did because surgeon wanted to do the hypospadias repair, a bit trickier, then wait six months and do the orchidopexy. If the hypospadias fix had needed any revision, like fixing leaks, he would have done it all with that second trip to the OR. Hope this helps and hope Adam has a smooth trip through his OR. Please remind us in Sept. -- Best wishes, Bob

Thanks for all the encouragement. WRBLACK you are right, we are actually going to see if a needle biopsy can be done on the lump for now and see what we are up against. I really worry about the anesthelogy part of it, so if it can wait till he's alittle older then that would be fine with me as it doesn't seem to really bother him right now. The eurologist did mention something about it twisting.??

Good luck with everything Claire!!! I know a mom who's son had a VERY BAD reaction to anethsesia. She made sure they SHOWED her what they gave him so they noted it in the charts that he can't HAVE what they gave him.. and I think she also has a copy of it to show whomever does any procedures on him. I would consider doing something like that with Adam.
Good luck... and we like being stuck with you!

We do have a copy of the drug, but what is hard to understand is that he has had that drug twice before for anestitics. He just suddenly developped a reaction to it, so it is scary that he may do the same with another drug. The doctors have reassured us that at least this time they will be ready as they know ahead of time.

Claire, I know that anesthesia can be a combo of drugs... can it be that one was the same and maybe the other part of the combo wasn't? Just a thought. I think I remember this other mom saying there is more then one drug in the anesthesia? I could be wrong though.
Good luck my dear! Oh.. and did they say if he had the lump was is SERIOUS? I didn't get that from your post and now I am worrying!
