We're in the same boat. Walmart does carry 1/2 sizes, and the are great for Angela right now. Well..they're "perfect" which means there is NO ROOM to grow!
Last year Angela finished 3rd grade wearing 6x's. She started 4th grade in the fall needing a 10 waist and 8 length. That's A LOT of growth just over the summer!
Anyway, Walmart 8 1/2's fit her. I haven't tried some of the other stores though.
Also, Angela is not able to do fasteners so I find that Old Navy has alot of elastic waisted stuff that are very reasonably priced. Sometimes I can find them at Walmart or Target too. Thankfully running suits are back in, as Angela LOVES them!!! The biggest problem I have right now is that Angela is getting VERY curvy! She went from being very underweight to having hips and a little bubble butt! It's very cute, but hard to fit! Most girls her size are still rectangular, not getting hips!
Sleeves are usually a problem for her, not only with short arms that come with DS, but one arm is about 1 1/2 inches shorter than the other. She always has to have her sleeves rolled up.
Angela happens to be obessed with wearing 2 shirts right now, which is fine in our frigid MN cold, but I just know it's gonna be a problem in July! LOL

Renee, Old Navy used to carry a huge line of 1/2 sizes and a size 10 1/2 was perfect for Emily for almost 3 years! They were about the size of a 14 in width, but more like a size 10 in length, so that was perfect. I'm not finding them as often anymore. JC Penney also has tons of 1/2 sizes. I don't know if this is a "Down syndrome" thing, or if it's just Emily........but Emily is very long waisted! So, I'm finding that buying her tops in the Junior section seems to help. The girls size 14 tends to always show her tummy!
When Emily was 8, there was no way she could do the snaps or buttons at the tops of her jeans. Whether this was the right way to handle it or not, I always went ahead and bought whatever I saw the other girls wearing and I just helped her with the snap. (And at school, she had a couple friends she knew wouldn't mind helping...or she would wait to use the restroom when she went to the self contained classroom and the teacher would help with it) She now does fine with all of that; except for one pair of jeans she has that has TWO buttons very close together.
When I went to our very first NDSC conference, there was a vendor there selling clothing that had been adapted for kids with special needs. GREAT idea, but the items weren't all that cute or trendy and much more expensive!!! We never went that route.

I agree with Emily and Leah... 1/2 size are great. Courtney got some curve to her body and she got long legs, with long torso. She wears mostly 12 and fine with lenght too but few years back the 8 1/2 where her best bet! PS LEAH to bad you not nearby for all the hand me downs...
I have found 3/4 lenght sleeves work wonderful LONG sleeves shirts and Capri pants make good pants! Courtney has juniors small 3/4lenght sleeves perfect! Also size 1 juniors capris.. some are good for pants... but in the last few months... they are getting too short!
I love OLD NAVY(expandable waist) JCPennys,Sears and even Target and WalMart are good! Depends what how how her body shape and when.. lol

Oh man, this is always a good question!
Laura has shorter arms and legs, and the long waist. I accidentally picked up some ultra low rise jeans for her to try on at Old Navy, and with her long waist - well you can only imagine.
Capris are working well for Laura right now. The length is perfect for long pants. I also buy 3/4 length sleeves and she wears them as long sleeves. I occasionally buy 1/2 sizes.
We get a lot of her clothes at Old Navy, and Lands End. Lands End has great capri jeans that fit her perfectly in length and the waist falls not far below her belly button, which is a good fit for her. I am glad to see the belly baring shirts are going out of style, it was hard to find longer shirts for her, but now that really isn't a problem.
For a long time she couldn't do the buttons at her waist. I bought either elastic waist or the slide fasteners. One day Mike was with us shopping at Old Navy. I was going through all the racks looking for jeans with slide fasteners. He turned to Laura and said "Laura, if you want to wear jeans, you have to learn to button, otherwise no jeans". Now she loves her jeans, looked at her Dad, and said "okay". He picked up some with buttons, we took them home, and by the end of the day she had the buttons down pat.
Anyway, we are with you Renee', not a fun thing.

I know John-John's a boy but the elastic waist pants at Target work great. I don't know if they sell those in the girls department. I have an aweful time at the major department stores. Pat

Thank you all. Lauren is now 81 pounds and all of it is belly. We have a very hard time with finding pants. She too always has her sleeves rolled up. I have to cut her jeans off. She was able to wear childrens place jeans but this last month she grew an inch and put on 6 pounds. I can't wait until she can wear shorts and T shirts again...lol
I will check JC Penny...thank you all again

Hmmm, what about those of us on the opposite end of the spectrum? Ethan is skinny as a rail, and has no bottom at all, LOL! His proportions are close to normal, except for his teeny waist and little butt. I have to buy him a 3T (and those are getting short) for length, but they fall off him unless we get adjustable waist. That only addresses half of our problem. They are cut too generously, and they practically fold in on him. I can't sew, and have no desire to learn, LOL! Any suggestions?

See Ethan sounds like Joshua... we need 12months pants waist.. and 18months lenght and they don't make 'belts' that small. Shirts.. most time snap between the legs 24months.. work. He my tiny one... skinny.. no butt... still wears a size 4 diapers!

LOL Laura...........I still say OLD NAVY!! They have lots of jeans with the adjustable waist band that can change to several different waist sizes.
Emily has a tiny waist, but her BUTT is another story altogether. I like the way Renee put it.... a "bubble butt". And she's getting her mother's "thunder thighs" too. Sigh.

We always had to roll Christopher's pant legs up. Now I get them hemmed at the cleaners or with some of the jeans the short length will fit him pretty good. Has always been a problem for us to get the right size for the waist the length has always been way to long. Not sure but I do believe that is quite a common problem for ones with DS. Even the shorts OMG they end up so long looking Funny there was a time Kodi and I wore the same size then she out grew me by lots, she is 5' 7" and I still am 5' 2" Hmmm LOL Now Chris and I just bout wear the same size and once and awhile he will have my jeans on and takes me a while to realize it LOLOL I too am short like Chris so I too have to buy the short or petite length. For us we find most that fits Chris at Kohl's CC ~

Sarah has a very long torso. It is really difficult to find shirts and sweaters that are long enough. Her pants are always too long. My MIL has hemmed a few pair for me and we roll up them up, too. 3/4 length sleeves are great. Sarah has a rounder belly and no butt so we are constantly pulling her pants up. My older daughter has the opposite problem. She is 5'10 and skinny. Everything is too short and wide on her. Chris

Meghan does really well with a brand of jeans called "Zana Di" found at macys & penneys...the 4Ts fit her perfectly (at 6 yrs of age lol) and she, having a long torso also, needs to wear a 6T top usually. I buy her alot of 3/4 length sleeves as well...those adorable handkerchief tops that are so popular right now, etc. the macy's green dog brand also fits her really well, as do levi's with adjustable waist. unfortunately, the less expensive clothes never fit her well....lol....
i love clothes shopping for meghan and making sure she looks her best - but it can be really frustrating to find things that look right on her - and she cant run around in dresses every day, lol!

OK- I pm'd renee but will add this for all. Children's Place and Gymboree have plus sizes now in pants and skorts. Cute stuff. Also for Lia I LOVE to buy capri pants as they fit her like pants length-wise. She is 47 inches tall and 65 pounds. Especially the Nike ones. Elastic waist and loose fit and cute colors. Target has leggings in the Fall that are cheap and stretchy and you can just roll up legs or whatever ( I dont sew). JCP has plus size shirts, but the smallest is size 10. Boys shirts are actually roomier and walmart has cute colors in the boys dept and they are cheap. Lia loves to dress like her brother anyway. I bought her a shirt at Scheeles that says" I'm not a Tomboy, I'm an Athlete!". Shoes are New Balance XX-wide-stylish and cute. Also stride rite has xx-wide. She wears like a 10.5 xx. Nancy
