Hey Laura! You know Maggie has lots of the same issues! Here's what we have to do. #1 Yogurt with a Culturelle mixed in twice a day. You can find it in the stomach medicine section at Walmart, CVS etc. I'm not sure how bighe is, but Maggie's 42 pounds and it takes one caplet, twice a day. #2 CRISCO!!!!! We slather it on thick! It works like magic! I highly recommend buying a small can just for the diaper changing area...mark it diaper rash medicine! You sure don't want that getting mixed in with your baking stash!! #3 If the antibiotic is causing bad diarrhea, the pharmacist told us to let her take a day break from it and then go back to it. I've even talked to the doctor about changing meds and giving smaller, but longer doses. All have worked. Just talk to the doc about it. All these things are suggestions of our local pediatrician cause Maggie has such low tolerance for antibiotics. It kills her stomach. They make a diaper rash cream called Miracle Cream that is a Rx too. It works well, but I'm telling ya, good old Crisco works great! Hope that helps. Robin M

We use this cream called "TRIPLE PASTE"...its a combination of petroleum, zinc oxide, lanolin, beeswax, and cornstarch...some pharmacies make up their own cream, or they can order it from Summer laboratories: 1-800-533-SKIN. It works very well...

Laura,
I just want to say that you are a terrific mother, not stopping until your little guy is out of pain. And kudos to everyone on this board for rushing in with suggestions. How great that we all have each other.

I've had 3 kids like that & the baby stuff Never worked! If they were loose, their bottoms could end up bleeding or close to it I read it in a parent's magazine & the doc told me about it the next day. "Lotramin AF" for athletes foot, but the walmart brand, much cheaper & the same stuff! Even the doc said use the walmart brand LOL It would clear my kids up ASAP. Pat

Oh, Laura, I just read this! Poor little guy! I sure hope your brother in law's suggestions work! I was also going to add, if you do end up using the silvadene at some point, make sure it doesn't get on the good skin. Hope he's all better soon!

Thanks for asking, you guys!
The Nystatin seems to be doing the trick, so it was clearly a yeast infection. Sorry I haven't posted up sooner, but he has been acting sick again over the last couple of days, and we just couldn't put him down at all yesterday. He finished the antibiotic on Friday, and by Saturday morning, had spiked a fever again. I'm not sure what to think. This morning he had a weird rash all over his face, small raised red bumps, that after he got up from his nap had started spreading to his trunk.
We have an appointment with the ped at 4:30, but my confidence in him is a little shaky right now.
By the way, HI Robin M!!! So nice to "see" you, I know you aren't on much, thanks for taking the time to share what you know.
It was one of those weird weekends, one thing after another with Aidan, and then my washer decided to spring a leak and we had water everywhere. So, we had to find and install a new washer in the midst of all of this, sheesh.
A big thanks to everyone, you guys are all the best. ;D

HI! I AM SO SORRY ABOUT YOUR SON'S RASH. OUCH!! MY SON WHO IS ALMOST 2 GETS CDIFF EVERY TIME HE IS ON AN ANTIBIOTIC. IT IS HORRIBLE! THE DIAPERS THAT HAVE NO SMELL SOUNDS NICE, BUT IT IS NOT! MY DOC USUALLY HAS TO PUT HIM ON ANOTHER MEDICINE TO CLEAR IT UP. I THING IT IS CALLED FLAGEL. SPELLING MIGHT BE WRONG,SORRY. I WOULD GET A SAMPLE TESTED FOR IT. AND, IF IT IS THAT, IT IS CONTAGIOUS! SO WASH LOTS!!!! ALSO, THE ONLY THING THAT WOULD HELP MY SON'S RASH WAS LIQUID ANTACID PUT ON A COTTON BALL AND DABBED ON TO THE SORES. I HOPE THIS HELPS! GOOD LUCK! TIFFANY

Hi, I'd just like to add a few points about diaper rash treatment. First, if you're using cloth diapers, be sure to wash your diapers with some vinegar in order to keep the cloth at a safe pH level. Second, even if you do not use cloth diapers, keeping the diaper contents at a pH of 5.0, which is skin's natural pH level, helps to stop diaper rash from forming. Skin's natural pH level is necessary to maintain skin's defenses. Third, technically, rashes that last more than about 36 hours are not common diaper rash and should be viewed by a physician. Many skin problems may seem to be diaper rash but are more serious and require physician attention. As far as pH levels go, there is one treatment, called babypaste5.0, that helps keep natural pH levels intact. You can learn more about BabyPaste5.0 at www.babypaste.com. It's worked well for me so far.

I am so very sorry to hear this. I know bad rash's can be so painful and very difficult. We have had great success with Butt Paste...It's very thick and I like that it is white so I can see where we put it...it seems to clear up pretty nicely... I hope he starts to clear up soon!

Laura Sarah has the same type of rash and it has only become worse today. It is so painful she won't sit. We have tried everything on it. I hope Ethan is better today. I hate when babies are in pain!

Thank God you got some medical advice on this finally. Gee, I am going to remember the name of that anitbiotic you have just mentioned. Cassie has a bad eye infection right now that she got from a child I now babysit. She may have an ear infection too, so the doctor gave me a prescription to fill if I found she was getting worse in a couple of days. I do hope his little bum is better soon. I can only picture and think of the trauma you have gone though, and I am sure trauma is a good word for his little bum. That is terrible.

When we get babies with these type of rashes in the hospital, we dose their bottoms with milk of mag. Then let the butts air dry...then coat them with Beadreax's (sp) Butt Paste. Works wonders! The milk of mag does neutralize the acid, and butt paste is a great paste, AND easy to wipe off so you don't have to wipe hard. (be careful though, it will stain clothes due to the zinc). Good Luck.
