If it's not Collin it's the administrators!!!

I received a call from Collin's aid today while I was on my way back from lunch (I wasn't driving). She proceeded to tell me that Collin was being bad and the principal said I would have to come and pick him up

She (one of the aids) said that everything was fine, he came in from recess with no problems (first nice day we've had in a while so this is a shock), went to his room noticed he had a sub-teacher and sub-aid. He ran out of the room and out the door and his AM teacher had to go get him. She said she brought him back and left and he got really mad, pulled and rolled up a big 10x12 rug and threw it and threw a kid sized chair and pulled on a little boys name tag so it choked him.

She said she called the principal and took him down to his office and he told her he didn't have time to deal with it to call me and I would have to come and pick him up. He told her he had a case conference to attend.

They called me at 1:25 I picked him up at 1:50 and guess who was there ?!?! The principal!!! He took me to the break room where they had him and he was sitting like a perfect angel having ST. His ST talked to me for a few minutes and said he had been acting fine since she got here and she would have never known anything was wrong until they told her. He was completely normal.

I let them know I was very upset that I was being made to take him home and that this was setting a bad example. That in the past they have not had any problems calling me to talk to him on the phone or come in to the school to spank his bottom I told them this was not setting a good precedent because he was not making the connection with the punishment and the behavior. Especially since he was allowed to go on with his day and have ST and was not being punished while at school and was now being good!!

The principal said he was to busy, he had a fire drill to run and a conference to attend!!! Excuse me what are we paying him for?!?! It would have taken him 5 minutes to fix the problem if he would handle things right to begin with. But, this is the man that wanted it written into his behavior plan that after being sent home for bad behaviors next they would expel him for 3 days instead of swatting him on the bottom and making him mind (which is legal in Indiana and I have asked to be written in to his IEP).

I called one of his teachers at home and she was furious. She said he has failed to act when she has asked for help with other students too!!

I asked Collin if he was bad and he said yes but now he was a good boy. I asked him if he hurt his friend and grabbed the name tag and he said yes. I explained to him that because he hurt his friend and I had to come to the school because he was bad he was getting a spanking and I spanked him in the parking lot.

I had to take him to my mom's and he told her he just wanted to see her.....Please tell me he does not understand what he just did and didn't do it on purpose!!!

I'm so mad and upset, upset with Collin for being bad and upset with the principal for how he handled it (or didn't handle it).

Update:

I went to take Collin's Daytrana patch (for ADHD) this evening and guess what ~~~ It was missing....humm explains (not excuses) the behaviors somewhat for him...but not the principal.

If, they had of checked and noticed his patch was gone and called and said "Connie, Collin started acting up this afternoon so we checked his patch and it's gone can you come and either get him or give him some meds?" I would have been over joyed but instead I feel like they neglected (took advantage) of my boy!!! I am so steaming mad I'm exhausted!!!

I need, oh I don't know...something to calm me down!!!

Hmmmmm Connie, yes a very frustrating day! Where do you put Collin's patch? Is it in a place where he could remove it?

I agree that this isn't a good way to handle him when he misbehaves......calling Mom and sending him to Grandma's house for the afternoon is so much more fun than school! Sounds like you'll have to find a time when the principal isn't "busy" and meet with him about the behavior plan.

Warm, sunny spring day AND no patch. That's a tough one.
Susan's right, you need to meet with this busy man to ask him if he plans on continuing this way or if he just had had a bad day. Also ask him to expunge this removal from Collin's record since it should have been handled otherwise - not your fault or Collin's, and shouldn't be counted as removal, only as discipline. 3-day suspension is coming up otherwise. What's next?

This might be silly, and it might be simply coming from my nursing background BUT.............Could you place Collin's patch in a location where HE can not reach it, but it could easily be seen by his teacher at the beginning of the day? I'm thinking maybe on his upper back, where they could simply check for it at the beginning of each day. They could note that it is present at the beginning of the day, and if Collin acts up their FIRST action should be to check to see if the patch is still present? If so, then they begin whatever the team decides is appropriate as a behavior plan. If not, they call you so you can bring a new patch.

When Justin was younger, we found that he literally NEVER gave the teachers any problems at all when his medicine was in his system. On weekends, sometimes we would try a day without it and invariably, he'd do something that surprised us..........and never good! So, this really IS serious. I know Collin can always make a choice to misbehave, but the adults sort of owe it to him to make certain his medication is in place.

Modified to add:
Even if the principal continues to say he is "busy".......I would think something like this could be arranged with his teacher and other people who work with Collin and care about him enough to work on this plan.

Connie, does Collin have a Behavior plan along with his IEP? Missing patches or NOT.. the school to continue to address these issues like this is NOT doing you or Collin any good! And, you ARE right.. what IS this teaching Collin? He can act up when he isn't happy and mommy gets to pick him up? Gee, Collin wins then right?

I'd highly suggest a behavior intervention plan... ask for a behavior assessment and get something in writing that they HAVE to follow.. and make sure it doesn't say "call mommy when it gets tough" LMAO

Ok, we have a behavior plan in place. Because Collin has been doing so much better they have kind of got away from using it.

At his IEP for setting this plan up the teachers were insistent that he not be sent home from school and that they only call me as a last resort because we (all of us) did not want to undermine their authority. One of the punishments was if they could not get him to comply he was to be sent to the principals office for a time out. This turned into a big joke and the teacher quit sending to the principal because he would allow him to sit on his lap and play with his palm pilot!! So it turned into a reward for being bad.

When his morning teacher found out he was sent home she was so upset!!! She said when she has to send a typical child to the principal and they have to be sent home there is always forms to be filled out and signed. None of this took place with Collin...so it's not on his permanent record. As far as the 3 day suspension I don't see that ever taking place but that was something the principal just wanted wrote into the IEP.

When I talked to the teacher last night. I asked how it was able to escalate to him pulling and rolling up a 8x10 rug and throwing it. I can understand how no one could have got to him before he threw a chair but a rug!!! Did they all sit back on their thumbs and watch this happen and not try to intervene? No one has been able to answer that one.

We have to put the patch on the fatty part of his body, like the fat on his arm (which he can reach) or his bottom. My thought with the bottom is it's covered by underwear. Plus this patch is hard to get off so it had to take him some time to pick it enough to be able to get a hold of it to pull off. I'm at a lose.

But, today he went on a field trip (I went too) and he was a perfect angel all day. No problems what so ever.
