Carmen,
Of course your little Adan will be in our prayers and close to our hearts. Ethan didn't have any heart issues requiring surgery, but he have intestinal bypass surgery. These little guys bounce back soooooo fast! His incision was probably 5 inches long, he was 8 months old, and the same evening of the surgery he was in his crib with his feet over his head!!!
Hang in there, and let us know what we can do to help!

Carmen,
Just wanted to let you know that I will be thinking about Adan and all your family on the 5th,and afterwards. I'm sure everything will be fine but I know you will worry until your little darling is back home happy, and healthy again.
Here's praying he has a really speedy recovery.
Sending love and best wishes to you from the UK
Lorraine

I just wanted to add that Sarah had a complete av canal and a pda. She was very ill with heart failure when she had her heart surgery but still was only in the hospital for 10 days. I saw other kids with ds who had heart surgery at the same time and were out of the hospital in as little as 3 days!
The only thinng I regret is not taking pictures. I did get enough courage to get one picture a couple of days after surgery but now I wish I had taken pictures from before her surgery until she was out of the hospital. I also wish I had gotten pictures and names of her doctors and nurses.
A funny thing happened a couple of months ago. A woman said she knew me but couldn't figure out where she knew me from from. It turned out that she was one of Sarah's nurses in the PICU.
I will be praying for Adan.
Chris

Hannah had surgey for complete av canal, vsd and mitro valve repair when she was seven weeks old. She was in PICU for about a day and a half in a step down room after that. We went home on day five.I know it is really scary when you hear your child needs heart surgery but they really have amazing technology now and to the surgeons it really is a common thing. I will be praying for your little sweetie.

It is 5:54am. - the morning of Adan's scheduled heart surgery to fix his AVD. I woke Adan up at 5:00 am. He cannot eat 6 hours before so I opted to feed just before the 6th hour. I am also keeping him awake so that he can sleep once we head to the hospital and up to 11:00 am when I am being told that he will be going in to prepare him for the surgery. I am trying to remain calm, but I have a knot on my chest and every once in awhile I start shaking and start crying. My two biggest fears is handing my little miracle over to the doctors and seeing him afterwards with all the tubing and machines. I have to keep the end goal in my mind to help me focus. Thanks for the website info. - I will go into it and yes send me pictures carmentorres11@kaplan.student.edu. I will keep everyone posted on his recovery and will send pictures of my own.

I'm sorry I missed this thread before....I am thinking of you and praying for a perfect recovery. My daughter had her surgery at the tender age of 4 months.....I still get emotional when I recall that morning and as you so eloquently said...handing over your miracle to entrust to a doctor.... If you have any questions....please let me know.....I know it's tardy advice....but I'd recommend blankets and pillows from home, Erin was a baby, so I brought her crib mobile in and hung from her bed. A mom here at Uno advised me to take pictures of Erin with all her tubes, etc.....I know it sounds SOOOOO wierd.....but I did it and one day Erin can see for herself how strong she was and she'll know where her scar came from. I've never shared the pics with anyone.....they are for Erin when she wants them. Erin was home in less than a week from her surgery...hopefully Adan will not have to be there for 2 weeks....she seemed to recover pretty quick though she didn't want to be on her tummy for about a month after surgery. I am thinking of you both and waiting to hear how all is.

Wanted to add.....YES.....that first time seeing them after surgery can be scary...there are tubes, stitches, and other yucky stuff.....but I PROMISE after 1 minute you won't even see them anymore....just your baby. I do rememeber being pleasantly surprised by the incision. For some reason I expected it to be very unpleasant with stitches visible and blood etc....I couldn't have been more wrong.....it was red and irratated, but it LOOKED like a scar already, there were no stitches visisble....they were all on the inside. I think what we imagine can sometimes be worse than reality.

I hope Adan's surgery went off without a hitch. I will pray for his recovery. Hope to hear an update soon. My son, Aidan (nearly 7, DS) had open heart surgery when he was 8 months old...and my daughter (4, non-DS) had open heart surgery at 8 months old...so I can totally understand what you must be going through. So scary. Big (((HUGS))). Hang in there. Staci
