LMAO Robin....you are the best......yes, can't you just come stay here for awhile !! I am so not a person who angers easily and I was really proud of myself for speaking up this morning and saying it calmly ....but then when the bus pulled up, I could literally feel my blood boil. She knew exactly what I wanted and she just ignored it completely. You are 100 % right.....I should NOT have even stepped onto the bus....I knew it.....and I hesitated.......BUT.....she just looked straight ahead, not even at me and was like she was purposely ignoring me. I can't even talk about it any more because I do feel taken advantage of and pooped on ! LOL.....thanks Robin & CC for your encoragement......

I agree with Robin I think you should just stand there until she gets up to help Erin on the bus. If she does not I would then make my call. I would be sure to tell them you have been getting on the bus, getting erin in the seat, making sure erin is buckled in and the aide has been doing nothing. Then you repeat the process when erin returns home. The entire purpose of the bus it to teach them some independence and confidence Allisa. Your anger is ok. My anger got Lauren ESY. Use it to get the situation fixed. You know what is right. This situation isn't right and this aide isnt the right person for Erin. They need to know and find someone who will work with Erin, not cause issues for you.
HUGS...I hate when we as parents have to fight for the simple things.

You might want to program the number into your cell phone, and stand ready to dial it right there at the bus if you have to wait more than 60 seconds for her to make a move. Also, don't look at her, look at the bus driver and let him/her handle the aid. I wouldn't talk to the aid at all any more - you told her what was expected in a very kind way even though she attacked & blamed you. Deal with the driver only. You might want to pretend that all is well while you stand outside the bus waiting (both to get on and to get off) - talk to the driver about the weather or your need for a good massage - whatever, just don't look at or address the aid at all. When she realizes that the conversation (about aid's job description) is over and no one is going anywhere until she does her job, she'll relent - especially if she realizes that you have her boss on speed dial while you're waiting.

Well, today Erin was on new bus ( all high school kids....very sweet, very nice group !) She had new driver & new monitor and it was lovely !! Erin didn't take her eyes off monitor.....hey....she knows this young lady is here for her.....what a concept !
Monitor took Erin' seat, secured it to bus, took Erin by hand, strapped her in and got her settled.....can she train the other one !! Maybe I'll just request to stay here with this bus ??

Allisa, Are the HS kids Typical developing? Just a thought maybe you can use this for leverage for something else...ie...speech. Could one of these High Schoolers be used as a Peer Mentor? This could work out good for everyone involved... Connie

Allisa, Collin had a young man w/DS in his preschool class as a helper, was a wonderful working relationship, they both adored each other and he could get Collin to do things the teacher could not.... Just a thought! Connie

Hi, During the reg school year nic's driver and aide run a tight ship! They are very nice but stern and don't take any crap (Nic will walk all over you if he knows he can get away with it). BUT the ESY bus aide WAS horrible. Sat in the front seat w/ her head down, no greeting-nothing. I would take him to his seat. He can put on his own seatbelt but needs someone to cinch it up tight. After a couple of days of me doing it and then finding out Nic got out of his seat while the bus was moving (the whole reason he needs an aide) I decided to not get on the bus and just stay at the door. He was having trouble buckling and she did nothing . finally I told her she needed to go help him. As she was walking back the driver mouthed to me that she was glad I said something. I then called the bus company and in a non-confrontational way told them what was going on (or rather NOT going on) and from that day on, she has been doing what she is getting paid to do. Don't be afraid to speak up-it's your child and she is getting paid to provide a service.

I think my bus driver also was relieved when I said something....it's tough for them I'd imagine....they aren't "the boss", and mine driver jumped right on my wagon once I started to question. Anyways....new bus is working out much better.....happy cheerful driver & monitr and pleasant passengers.....all seems good..... One battle down and over.....yeah !

Alissa, I am sorry that you are having such problems with Erin's aide. She doesn't sound like a very good choice, does she? MY experience has only been for a year. Before that, when Michael went on the bus, there was no bus aide for him. We didn't even think of such a thing. Usually one of his older siblings sat with Michael on the bus. I live in Canada, and in my school division a few years ago they started a program for all the special needs kids that they would get a bunch of "little buses" to ferry them around to any school in the school district. So, we checked it out and found the school that we figured has the best program for Michael and tranferred him last year. I live in Bluffton, and work in Bentley, about 25 miles away. Michael's new school is 15 miles from Bentley, so for last year I made the arrangement to have Michael get on and off in Bentley, so he goes the rest of the way with me. They do have an aide on the bus, but she gets on the bus mid-way through the run. I guess that's what happens when the run starts by Bluffton and she lives in Bentley. ANYHOW, now that you are all totally confused.... I never took Michael onto the bus. Usually he would just walk himself onto the bus and the aide (or the driver if she wasn't there) would walk back with him and make sure his seat belt was fastened. For the drop off, the aide would almost always walk him to my truck. This year I am changing it so Michael will be picked up and dropped off at home. He will have a longer bus ride, but I think he can handle it. In a sort of similiar-to-yours experience, Michael one year had really lousy aides at school - we switched schools.
God Bless...maybe the stupid aide smartened up over her vacation.

I know it's one battle won and congrats for that but really it shoul;dn't have had to be a battle in the first place, ya know? I get so frustrated when I hear these stories. Nic is 10 and we have a long way to go. His 1st grade year was the worst!!! His teacher was (and pleeze forgive me) an idiot. Just collecting a pay check. Didn't want Nic in her class. He was in PT learning support which meant he was only there for LA and Math. It was K and 1st grade so at any given time there was only a max of 4 kids in the class. She had 2 classroom aides and Nic had his own 1:1. She was so negative which Nic picked up on and the whole year was a power struggle between the two. The BS went in almost everyday to give her suggestions and she never followed through. We had 8 IEP mtgs that year! Di
