I don't know how many of you watch "Big Brother" it is on Tuesdays Thursdays and Sundays I think, at 9p.m. eastern time and I have been a sucker for it every time it comes out.....until last night! It is kind of a spin off of "Survivor" only they are stuck in a house together instead of an island. Well, for those of you that read the thread about the word "RETARDED" and have decided that you are no longer going to sit by and allow stupid people to use unacceptable language, this is one of those times you can speak up and email the television station and say so. If it had been a racist comment it would NOT have been allowed so why it is acceptable for them to use derogatory language by calling a member of the big brother house retarded I would no more accept that then I would someone using the n word!!!!!! If CBS, NBC, ABC and FOX get enough complaints from families they'll quit letting it be acceptable. Jen, the girl in the big brother house who used the word retarded when referring to another one of the people in the big brother house should be made on national TV to apologize! It just burns me up that it is looked upon as ok. Thanks for letting me jump on my soap box on behalf of our loved ones once again hugs, Robin

The "R" word has always been a sore spot w/ me too. I recently went through a huge oreal w/ the girl who has been cutting my hair for over 20 years. She's the only person to cut Nic's hair as well-BUT she just kept saying it. I would let her know how it makes me feel, I would tell her about times when others have said it etc -she just didn't "get it". One day she told my friend (who also has a son w/ DS) that she doesn't understand why it upsets me so much and that she's been saying it all her life and doesn't think she can stop. I stopped goin there. I sent her a 4 page letter which included comments from about 30 other parents who feel the same way. Right after that happened, one of my favorite local newscasters said it on air. I sent her an email the next morning and she did an on-air apology. She told me in her email reply that she has a niece or nephew(can't remember) with DS and a couple with other learning disabilities. She said it just "came out" and that she was sleep deprived (no excuse).
I saw the BB8 episode which you described-it took me aback but I considered the source-it was Evel thingy who said it- wasn't it?
I hope you get a positive reply from the network Di

I was listening to a radio interview this AM w/ larry the cable guy, he has a new show coming out on comedy central...he was complaining that he would not be able to use the "r" word (according to standards & practices) and he, and the other guys hosting the radio show (who throw the word around ALOT - satellite radio) were all annoyed at these new words that were being censored (there were others as well) I play poker on bodog, and alot of things are censored there - some that I dont find offensive, such as "moron"....however, the "r" word is ALLOWED!!!! One of my good friends on there, who I've known for a year now, and loves my kids, goes off on people on my & meghan's behalf...however I've been thinking -- it's now time to write Bodog and tell them, if all other words are censored, so should the "r" word. Good luck Robin, and WTG Di!! Oh - one more thing (HIJACKING OF POST WARNING)...... .DH was getting a haircut the other day, and there was a young lady w/ DS getting her hair cut & colored...she had a reaction to the color and was whining and carrying on b/c it was uncomfortable. So Eric's haircutter had to excuse herself from him, and help the young lady out, etc. When she came back she apologized saying "i'm so sorry, THEY'RE such a pain in the behind" (or something similar)..and Eric said "EXCUSE ME" and she repeated it...well, he really cut into her, explaining he had a daughter w/ DS, etc...she'd better think twice about what she says, and - lol - he had a coupon for a free haircut so he threw that down on the counter...and said, there's your payment, don't expect a tip! He later called the manager to complain, although I'm sure it did no good....grrrrrr....I agree...... laurie

I don't watch the show and now I am glad I don't.
Another Hijack... I got another one for you. I had to take Lauren to the hospital a few months ago. The doctor that admitted her came in (our doctor didnt go to this hospital) and after looking her over she said I just admitted another mongloid child at another hospital. I looked at my mom when she left and I said did she say what I think she said? She also used the R word.

"Mongoloid" was the proper term years ago. When an older person uses it (70+) I usually don't get upset. After Nic was a few months old I ran into a cousin (probably in her late 40's) she looked at Nic and said several times"He doesn't look like a mongoloid" I said, "He's not, he's American" LOLOL Di I don't watch the show and now I am glad I don't. I am not a parent but since I have Down syndrme I can say how much I hate that word especially in movies. I couldn't believe that, that word was in the remake of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. Have any of you seen it? Johnny Depp was in it. You'd never know because he looked really different in it. Anyway, this boy said that word while eating chocolate candy. I don't recall the R word being said in the orginal movie. It had Gene Wilder as the Chocolate candy maker. He was Willie Wonka.
I don't think that it matters though because people will say what they want regardless. You can educate yes but it is up to them to change their attitudes. The lady who said she just didn't get it has a real problem. I mean, she needs to try to show some sensitivity toward her customer's. What happened to being sensitive toward other people's feelings? The R word used as a name or slur is not only being insensitive but rude.
I don't really hear it much except on TV sometimes. I don't watch Big Brother. I did watch it once in the beginning but decided it was more promotion and superficial so I stoppped watching them. I'd rather watch a good movie instead especially if it has Johnny Depp! ;D

people use that term all the time , my brothers do it,,, one of them alwasy apologizes as soon as he does it , the other two are oblivious,,,, my wife never tolerated that word even before we had victoria,,, i am afraid i was a frequent user before,,, its all relative i guess,,,,, but i know everytime i hear it its like a stake through my guts!!!! it doesnt bother me if its used correctly in context,,, i hate p. c . a spade is a spade : greek philosophy; a shovel is a shovel no matter what u call it........ but ....... there are better ways to communicate especially about someone as a person with ds

I was so excited to take Nic to see Charlie and the chocolate factory...he watched Willy Wonka at home all the time. In the summer, our local movie theatre shows free movies every Tue and Wed. Charlie was one they showed last year. I was SOOOOO dissappointed when I heard the kid say the "R" word! Completely turned me off. Nic doesn't "get it" yet but I know one day he will be the brunt of it from school, most likely. This is why kids say it, they see it in the movies and think it's funny and ok to use it too. I work at an Elem school and whenever I hear a kid use it, I take them aside and really lay into them. They all pretty much know no to use the "R" word or name-call at all. I am not a parent but since I have Down syndrme I can say how much I hate that word especially in movies. I couldn't believe that, that word was in the remake of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. I have a rather better story about attitudes towards people with disabilities. I go to a beauty school to get my hair done (my niece is a student there), and they have a volunteer with some kind of mental disability - not Ds - who comes in to help. She washes and fold towels and re-arranges the nail polish. The people in that place love her & dote on her - they actually argue over who will get to do her hair or nails. In addition, they have one day a week where they do hair and nails of people brought in from a nursing home. They seem to adore these folks. The attitudes of a few are infectious, whether good attitudes or bad. If we take the lead in welcoming the generally unwelcomed, then at least some others will follow.
About the r-word, specifically: all children need to be taught about all rude words. We do not allow them to uttur other rude words, why should we give this one a pass? I don't let my kids refer to any human being as stupid or ugly, and there is no name-calling, even in "fun" because it breeds bad habits from which mistakes of the tongue emerge.
Chris, too

I got an email from the Dr. Mcdonald's communication web site about this very subject. The International Mosiac Down Syndrome association is having a online auction for a lithograph from cartoonist Lynn Johnston who pens "For better or Worse". The lithograph cartoon strip deals with the "misuse of the "R" word. Its a very good message. Check it out, and you can "bid" on the lithograph till the first week in August if you like. The website is www.imdsa.com and click on the auction info box in the middle of the page.........Dolly
