We just got back from the eye Dr and he wants to do Strabismus Surgery on Justin. We had gone to him last month and he said he felt Justin has gotten passed the wearing of the glasses, he has had glasses since he was 4 months old. He gave us some eye drops to do to see it if that would help the muscle, well Mr J had a real bad reaction to the drops so now he wants the surgery done. I know a few of the kiddos here have had this done so speack up moms and let me know if it worked and what the side effects if any your child had. Thank you Becky

Russell had no side effects with it being done. For him, it was relatively simple - in and out surgery. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't and may have to be done again. Russell has had it done and will probably have another surgery done like it but not for the same thing.
Good luck.

I had one doctor recommend it for Carter after only a ten minute evaluation. His attitude was might as well just operate. Hmmm...We are getting a second opinion later this month. All the kids in the waiting room had had the surgery and the parents said it's really fast.

Justin has been seeing this Dr since he was 4 months old and he is now 4 1/2 so I trust this Dr. He is going to do a MRI on Justin first to make sure it is just the muscle in his eyes and not something else going on, The MRI is friday morning then the surgery is on the 22nd after we get back from St Louis. Thank you A and Kristen. Becky

My daughter Savannah now 8 and not DS had the surgery. She had went completely blind in one eye, so we ended up patching 3 mths one eye and then the other for 2 years. She got the surgery last year and how wonderful. There we're no real bad side effect except that she said it burned a bit after surgery but the drops they gave us helped with that problem. She is still wearing glasses but her vision has been staying good. I say go for it. If you wish I can send you a picture of before and after with Savannah. You will be amazed at the difference. Let me know by e-mailing me at my personal e-mail. Just write UNO MAS in the subject line. Claire

CC here is some of what the Dr told me The eye doctor simply changes the placement or length of an eye muscle. This small change can pull the eye into proper alignment. This is a good site to read, www.harthosp.org/eyes/procedures/strabismus.htm Becky

My non-Ds neice had this done when she was around 3 years old, I believe. The difference was definitely noticeable and she recovered pretty quickly. She looked worse than she felt! I don't remember her having an MRI done prior to the procedure.
She is 7 now and does not need to wear glasses. They had to go through wearing a patch thing on one eye for awhile, but she just gets regular check ups now.

Becaky - I am glad you have a good doctor - makes a HUGE difference! That was interesting site - I read a lot of info I will be beinging up at his next doctor! Also, his DT said that she had a child have the surgery and was back in class the next day, so it really is a pretty quick thing from how it sounds - Good Luck!
